Of course Woods will play every match, no matter how good or bad hes playing. Why? Because the simple act of him being on the team is nothing short of a publicity stunt to keep the ratings for the Ryder cup higher. If Pavin was picking players based on how well they played this year, Woods wouldn't even have been a thought... and Americans who have actually won this year were left off the team. Instead, its pretty obvious the PGA Tour and their sponsors made clear to Pavin that Woods was to be on the team and Pavin probably didn't have a whole lot of choice. If he was picking players to win, Woods would be sitting this one out... so you connect the dots.
The PGA Tour is all about money, and the thought of Woods not being on the Ryder Cup, or not playing in every match had them scared to death. If you think they didn't lean on Pavin and make it clear that Woods was to be on the team, you're very naive.
But let me make it clear - I'M A TIGER FAN. But that said, I would admit Tiger's game is not up to par to play in the Ryder Cup.
It is my opinion that the only reason Pavin picked Tiger is for the RATINGS. Because let's be honest, without Tiger on the American team, only 50% of the golfing fans will probably be watching. And that will be a tremendous financial lost for the PGA Tour who is counting on Tiger for the ratings, if not the WIN.
I know that Tiger wanted to be part of the Team, to play for his home country. But his game is not there yet for him to even think of playing at the Ryder Cup. I would have wished that he bowed out of the Team and just watched on the sidelines. He still has many chances to be in the Ryder Cup team and he should have waited (at least next year) to be part of the team.
Lee - as a tiger fan I can see how you would say only 50% of fans will be watching. However, you need to clarify that true golf fans will watch. He is the 2nd best the game has seen. He's brought a lot to golf (definitely not all good) but he is not bigger than the game. The fans who came to the sport with him, are Tiger fans not golf fans.
After the way that Tiger played today in the BMW tournament (42nd) Pavin might be wishing that he had a do-over. At this point, to call Woods a great golfer is nostalgia. Hopefully, Pavin won't play him out of obligation or for ratings. If so, I'm afraid that the U.S. team is sunk.
I wish Tiger would do the right thing and resign from playing in the Ryder Cup. He brings nothing to the table. His game is not there. We have seen this year that there are alot more great golfers than just Tiger. His days of dominance is over however hard he works on his game.
