Pete Rose stood on first base and tipped his cap to the screaming crowd - a little bit like 25 years ago. The banished hits king made a rare on-field appearance Saturday while the Reds commemorated the 25th anniversary of his record-setting hit No. 4,192 at Cinergy Field.

Yet, all the druggies are still playing or on the way to the hall. Strawberry was a stone junkie but wasn't banned.
Got that right! HALL OF FAME!
This is about Pete Rose, not Strawberry or anyone else.
Rose lied for years about gambling and then whined when he came clean and wasn't reinstated. He used a corked bat in games (proven), complained when he wasn't given a grooved pitch while chasing the DiMaggio record, deliberately injured Ray Fosse with a bush play in the All-Star game and most of all bet on games involving his own team from the dugout phone.
You could say that most of that stuff added up to a simple case of no class, but the corked bat was outright cheating. Also, the gambling should be an automatic and permanent death penalty. If you're going to deny McGwire and Bonds the hall for PEDs, why give Rose any consideration. 4,256 hits? Yeah, but 4,250 of them were singles, and none were against Walter Johnson or Christy Matthewson.
Rose hit so many singles he should have worn a dress.
Put Rose in the Hall of Fame; period. He deserves to be in there more than many that are in there. It should be based solely on what he did on the field as a player, not on what he did after he stopped playing- betting on baseball. If it is necessary to change the rule about not being left in if you have a lifetime ban, then change the damn rule.
What Rose did on the field?? He admitted he bet on his own team from the dugout!!!
How much worse does it get than that?
