4 games to many. Should never have been suspended in the first place.
While I don’t think he should have been suspended in the first place, reducing the suspension to 4 games was the correct decision. There is a fine line here that Goodell treads when deciding punishment in the form of suspensions which is; whom exactly are you punishing, the player or the team and fans?
In this case suspending the starting quarterback punishes the team (actually, the whole Steelers organization) and the fans far more than the player so I would suggest if you want to punish the offending player just fine the crap out of him.
Goodell initially wanted to suspend him for 6 games so just let him play but fine him 6 games worth of money which in Ben’s case I’ll bet is a whole lot of money to have to pay for something that resulted on no charges or lawsuits or any kind.
corsair82,
Total BS. He SHOULD be suspended, and for a full 6 weeks. What he and his bodyguards did in that bar is deplorable. Do you know anything about the case? Despicable conduct; against league conduct rules; he deserves the suspension.

The team and the fans have every right to be mad about him. They are the ones who lost out WHEN he decided to act like an ass.
You're ignoring what he was accused of and the fact that there are other charges pending out of state? Disgusting!
A f**kup like Roethlisberger will f**kup again at some time in the future, and then maybe a judge or commissioner with an actual spine will do what needs to be done. Or maybe some young woman's father or brother will just deal him a little street justice.
Amen Spider. I hope they throw the book at the skank! Big ben has a penchant for little girls. And giving alcohol to the under aged should have, at the very least, seen the cops/bodyguards fired from their regular jobs!
That's just par for the course...I hope Big Ben ends up like Steve McNair.
I am 100% sure that one day Ben will end up like Steve Mcnair. As will you, me, Goodell, and every other living thing on the earth.
There do you feel better?
Big Ben is a big piece of fecal material. No class, no pride, no integrity. Shame on Goodell for not standing next to his guns.
Well, what could we expect? Michael Vick gets "go to NFL team" shortly after he leaves prison. Goddell is a wimp. The man can talk about "image" all he wants to but he is part of NFL's image problems. National Felon League.
Goodell is a worthless commish. NO spine. NO integrety. Maybe ben needs to go for his job. Then we'll know what to expect as far as ethics from him.
Ben should sue Goodell. The police found no evidence of any crime. It fact this women absolutely looked to be trying to set him up to extort money and get her 15 minutes of fame. Ben was not arrested, charged with or convicted of any crime. This is akin to slander. He is likely only going alone with the suspension because he doesn't want to get blackballed out of the league.
Give him time. Big Ben will do it again. I give you my word and I would bet anyone that wants to make a little wager. A leopard doesn't change his spots. Macho Man will be back in Atlanta whipping it out for little girls that want autographs. I'm just glad that he's going to be playing against my Cleveland Browns. I'd hate to see Cleveland win without beating the best quarterback.
Tennessee Titans' Vince Young: caught on video fighting a man in a restroom because the man dissed Young's school. Result - NO SUSPENSION.
Cleveland Browns' Shaun Roger: carried a HAND GUN into an AIRPORT. Result - $400,000 fine and NO SUSPENSION.
Pittsburgh Steelers' Big Ben: ACCUSED of of sexually assaulting a Georgia college student following a night of drinking in a Milledgeville, Ga., bar on March 5. He was not charged by Georgia authorities. Result - was suspended in April for violating the league's personal conduct policy for six regular season games even though NO CHARGES were filed!!!
Mr. Goodell, what the hell are you trying to promote? It is better to carry a gun and start fights than to have NO CHARGES filed against you in a "he said/she said" situation?
WOW! Sign me up!
emick23,
You don't have to have charges filed against you for the league to determine that your conduct was deplorable and against league conduct rules. Do you know anything about the case? Obviously not, or you would not say the above regarding Ben's case. He got the woman drunk, cornered her in a restroom against her will and would not let her leave. In addition, her friends wanted to go see if she was okay and Ben's bodyguards blocked them from going back to where she was. I wonder who told them to block the way? Probably Ben. Yep, I would say that is deplorable conduct. He should get the full six weeks.
Where there is smoke there is fire, it's just a matter of time befor he screw's up again.
Good thing he isn't black, or he'd be waiting 8 games.
I guess good ol Roger Goodell has several More thousand dollars in his Pocket! I'm not taking sides on the original suspension. Just saying i bet ben had LOTS of money with him when in went into the office and less when he came out!
I care a whole lot more for my daughter than my dog. I guess with that said he should get at least 2 years in federal prison. Humm, ok maybe 4 games will do!!
Ben wasn't convicted of anything, dipwad. Vick was.
Goodell is a mope, how can he suspend B.R. for six regular season games and yet allow him to play in the preseason? Too much power, not enough common sense!
I guess being rich and infamous gets you off in Conservative States of America every time.
Rapelisberger is trash. He will run afoul of the law again.
Should be banned from football! Goodell is a wienie.
Weinie works. I would have used a better word but it might get me banned.
Jangocat, you know not of what you speak. this has happened before with Rothlisberger.
Trevor t, your an idiot.
Different rules for different folks. It will happen again and he will be slapped on the hand again.
he will get busted again..once a looser always a loooooossser
If Ben commited a crime prosecute him. If not whats with the suspension? Besides, a suspension punishes the team and the fans not Ben.
So, he behaves himself for five months and you think he is cured? Ridiculous. The punishment should not be reduced. And Baltimore is the only team in the division that benefits from Roethlisberger from being out. That sucks. The Browns will play agains Roethlisberger and the Bengals were not in the six week period.
Just wait until Ben gets drunk again. The behavior will return as he attacks another woman. Hope its not the case, but five months isn't enough time.
Why is this guy not in prison? Oh that's right, he plays in the NFL. He can commit any crime he wants.
Slander? Slander? Oh, plueeeeeeeeze........Why did he change home towns? em>>
National Felon League.
AND ignorance can be fixed but stupid is forever.
Oh yes, and they SHOULD NOT take close-up head shots of Roethlisberger. Sorry, but the guy is about as butt-ugly as they get.
That's part of why he needs to get little impressionable girls drunk!
He is just another NFL millionaire who has no respect for anyone. He is a rapeist and scumbag. He should be sent to prison. Why didn't he go in front of Congress? He is just like Kobe B. an overpaid two-bit punk who should be in jail!
Fact of the matter Goodell has to be one of the biggest morons alive. You suspend a player who has never been charged from a legal standpoint all you have is a group of accusations. Here is one big legal statement guys. Fact is it doesn't matter what the commiss thinks he was not arrested, not charged in any of these instances so he is being penalized for nothing NO PROOF otherwise he would have been charged.
Look at the other side Bill Belichick was caught cheating no suspension (good thing it wasn't baseball or he would be seated by Pete Rose) Then there is Vince Young and Cedrick Benson both arrested this summer and jailed no suspension or look at former Titan Steve McNair arrested on felony charges for a DUI with a loaded gun no suspension. Personally I think he has vendettas if he has rules he needs to apply them fairly. Since he suspended Ben Young and Benson should have had stiffer penalties since they were arrested and jailed, as for Belichick he should be seated next to Rose and have a life suspension form football for cheating.
Rules are fine but apply them fairly and until Goodell learns that he will never have my respect as a leader of the league.
