1. You are in the final group of a major championship on the last hole. You are in the chase to win it. Why wouldn’t you ask for a ruling BEFORE you choose your club and swing away? If you have any doubts, ask for a ruling. That’s what other golfers in tournaments do all the time. They try to use the rules to their advantage. How many times have you seen Phil or Tiger ask to get a drop and a better lie? DJ should have asked first.
2. The golfer and his caddie should have read and known the rules and the ‘local’ rules before the tournament even begins. This is their job, their way of earning money. They are professional golfers and caddies, playing for millions of dollars, Not a beer at the 19th hole. THE RULES REALLY DO MATTER HERE! The caddie should jump in there and warn DJ before any decision to hit it. Think before you act.
3. Today, people want to see the ‘grip it and rip it’ big hitters. No one cares about the guy who hits it shorter and in the middle of the fairway. If a golfer is that far off line, then there should be some consequence. You’re a pro, put it in the fairway. Hit it straighter. On other holes a shot that far off line would have been OB.
4. To return to #1, was it a bunker or not? Why were spectators in it? If you are unsure ask!!!! Get a ruling from the close-by official or get 4-5 other officals out there to give you the correct ruling. It could mean winning or losing the MAJOR tournament. Which in the end did for DJ. Take as long as necessary.
5. By the time the next big tournament is held at W.S., the PGA needs to change the rules, Define which are bunkere, are there difference inside the ropes and outside the ropes, etc.
Dustin Johnson is the only person at fault for the rules violation.
I don't have a problem with all of the sand traps being played as bunkers. However, I feel that the players should get free relief in the bunkers outside of the ropes. It is just plain unfair to ask a player to play the ball as it lies in a bunker where people have walked, sat, rolled, picnicked, and driven. I know that, ideally, players shouldn't be in bunkers that are that far off the fairway. But spectators love to watch the big hitters, and big hitters hit it crooked. That's just a fact of life. All of the players could hit the fairway with an iron or hybrid, but who wants to watch nothing but that all day long?
On a final note, I hope that in the future Dustin Johnson and Nick Watney refrain from admitting that they don't read the local rules carefully. That just sounded awful coming from two professional golfers.
