George Michael Steinbrenner III, who both inspired and terrorized the Yankees in more than three decades as owner, died Tuesday of a heart attack at age 80.

May he rest in peace.
Clinton, MD
Not a Yankees fan by any means, but I'll give credit where it is definitely due...good job, George.
Rest in peace.
Forget it! I'm a Yankees fan, and they were successful DESPITE George. And he was a total A-hole. So, does that mean I don't have any compassion for his family and friends? No. But I can't say as a sports fan that the loss of this owner will be anything other than good. Next up to get his name out of baseball? Bud Selig.
See ya George. Go Yankees!
Only a few days ago the announcer for the Yankees died now George, he did so much for the Yankees and will truly be missed. Hoping he can see the Yankees take the series from his new Sky box in the clouds.
He's up, up, up .... and outta here!
RIP
For George's sake, God will be more forgiving than George ever was to his employees..
one less arrogant a-hole on planet earth
The Voice of God passed away the other day, now, God himself has passed away. I'm sure I'm in the minority, but, I have always really liked George from the very first time I heard him speak after he first took over as the majority owner, and what his vision of the New York Yankees was and what they will become in the not to distant future, World Series Champions. He was a great motivationalspeaker, he actually got you excited with every new word coming out of his mouth. He gave me the feeling of his passion of the game of Baseball, where I could tell, he meant every single word he spoke. To many times, when you hear other owner talk, half the time I can tell right away that, either he was a BS artist, or weird, or an out right liar. When George spoke there was none of that. Sure, he was strict, he was demanding, and if the job didn't get done , or it wasn't to George's pleasing, that person was gone, and he brought in new people. Hell, George had a revolving door put in just for Billy Martin. But, even as terrible as some people said he was, he was a man of his word, and brought the Greatest City in the World, and the Greatest Fans in the world what they wanted so dearly, Winning Pennants and winning World Series Championships. And, one last thing, I'm so glad that George got to see his vision come true, with the building of a brand new Stadium, and a World Series Championship in it's inauguralseason. If George had to go out, at least he went out a winner! And, when you think about it,, we, the fans, that George loved so much, with his almost last once of energy, brought us another World Series Championship in 2009, and he left knowing that his New York Yankees weren't going to let him down, and they will bring George one final World Series Championship in this year of 2010. So, with a heavy heart, I want to ask the Good Lord to give George a free pass into the best seat in the house, right next to the Good Lord and his father in their corporate box seats that can see each and every game from now, to eternity! Thank you Mr Steinbrenner, for all you have done for the Game of Baseball, because if it wasn't for you, MLB today wouldn't look like it does, and still is, the Greatest Game in the World, thanks to you! Again, Mr Steinbrenner, I just wanted you to know, that you will be missed by the millions upon Millions of fans all around the world. that make up the New York Yankees Universe. One last thing George, I'm sure your aware of it now, that all the old dearly departed New York Yankees are playing ball up there on the Field of Dreams. Micky, The Babe, Iron Horse Lou, Joe D, Thurman and al the rest of the guys, I have to ask you a favor Mr Steinbrenner, Please don't fire Billy Martin as soon as you get there. My condolences goes out to the entire Steinbrenner family. You father was the Greatest owner the game of MLB has ever seen, and he will never be surpassed. ! R.I.P.
Anger Management? Might be good idea for you XFringe
Steinbrenner always did things on his own terms and it's only fitting that he should pass away during the only year that there is no estate tax, better known as the 'death' tax. Now he gets to pass on every dime of his wealth to his family and his various charities without Uncle Sam fingering it.
Never have been a Steinbrenner fan. His (as well as others) refusal to allow revenue sharing from local broadcasts & ticket sales has lead to the current problems between small/medium & large market teams. That being said, he was smart enough to capitalize on one of most one-sided business deals in history & spend money to try & win. R.I.P.

"it's only fitting that he should pass away during the only year that there is no estate tax"
LOL I had completely forgotten about that. Too funny.
Cant wait for Sean Hannity/Glenn Beck/Ann Coulter to blame this one on Obama.
Who cares but baseball beer bellied fans, the most boring sport, get a life
What american cares about soccer, "the scoreless game". Wonder if God had meant to allow a game that ignores the reason we have so much in the world, hands? Baseball is boring at times, but at least we use what God gave us to play it.
Warmest respects and condolences go out to the Steinbrenner family and to all of the New York Yankees fans. George may have been an intolerable s.o.b. at times but it was never without purpose. He was truly a guy who, as owner of the greatest franchise in baseball history, one simply loved to hate. Envy and arrogance is what kept many of his detractors from seeing the better side of a man such as George. R.I.P. George Steinbrenner. You've earned your place in baseball history, as well as that Sky Box above many of us are certain you are seated at right now. (He's probably on the phone still giving directions.) Without a doubt, George did what many can only hope and pray to do - Go out as a winner. Go Yankees!
George may have been good for the Yankees and for baseball, but he was an SOB. I hate to speak ill of the dead, but seeing all if these people singing his praises is so fake and shows they did not know the man. I worked for George at American Shipbuilding/Tampa Shipyards and met him personally on more than one occasion. He was by far the most arrogant and controlling person I have ever met. When you worked for him, he felt like he owned you. George felt entitled to control every aspect of your life. He even fired a minor league ball player for not getting a hair cut. He was known to tell senior people in the company to move if he felt that they were not living where he thought they should. He was also known to intrude on employees social lives and did not like two people working for him to get involved socially. In at least one case I know about personally, he threaten to fire the junior of the two employees if it continued (they were not in the same organization, so it was not a manager/employee situation). I was not allowed to leave the office without letting them know where I was going, how I could be reached, and when I would return (this was back in the days before cell phones and blackberries took over our lives). This was any time, even going home for the evening or on the weekends. You endured this, yet the man was so arrogant he could not even be bothered to say hello when passing you in the hall. I recall one time when passing George and the company CEO greeting the two of them and having the CEO respond, while George just kept walking like I was not even there. On another occasion, passing George in the hall, he again completely ignored my greeting. And I was not some peon, I was one of the senior managers in the company. And for all his business success with the Yankees, he ran the shipbuilding company right into bankruptcy.
George may have been great for baseball and the Yankees, and could be generous at times, but he was a real SOB most of the time.
I was waiting for some dolt to politicize this, I see I did not have to wait long. I am surprised that you did not state that had we passed Obama's healthcare bill sooner Steinbrenner would still be around. It was Bush's fault!
You're just mad cuz I beat you to the punch... and its called "sarcasm" and "humor", figures a knuckle dragger wouldn't understand such a simple thing lol!
Gov Hater,
Actually, I am able to recognize sarcasm and humor quite easily ... when it is present. Another lefty that "hates", what a shock!?
a sad day in the bronx for sure. rest in peace big guy.
Memory Eternal.
Rest in Peace.
rest in chaos
I hope he 'Rests in Peace', but I suspect 'Costanza' & his cheap envelopes may have been his un-doing.
He should'a known better to trust 'Costanza' to buy but the Cheapest Get-Well stationery there is!!!
Good one! That's funny because I don't really follow sports that much, and whenever I hear about George Steinbrenner all I can hear in my mind is the sound of George Costanza's boss (which always sounded a little like Larry David).
As a Boston Red Sox fan, Steinbrenner was a guy we surely loved to hate. He will be missed, and his loss is a loss to all of baseball. Rest in peace, and thanks!
i'm with you dave, george was a large part of the rivalry and will be missed.
A very nice sentiment, and sums up the essence of good-natured, sporting rivalry.
I'm with you on that one Dave. RIP you old carmudgeon!
Even the rich cant escape the reaper.
R.I.P. George. You have done so much for Baseball, thank you.. A Red Sox fan
Love him or hate him, he was certainly larger than life, and will be remembered. I'm sure there will be a major tribute to him at the All-Star Game tonight.
RIP Boss..this is a sad week for Yankee baseball. Love or hate, you cant deny what he built. There is no need for negative immature comments today, but people cant resist kicking a man when he's down. It's pretty sickening.
He had a GREAT life. Successful beyond anyone's dreams 80 is not unheard of to die. I should have 1/10th of his fortune. I'd be glad to check out just as he did. It's really a blessing when you think of it...FAST and no lingering torture with tubes, and nursing homes and god knows what other awful thing.
My hat is off to him, he lived a FULL life, people in Boston including me loved to hate him but in the end it is his success we envied and wished for ourselves!
.....I'm certainly not a Yankee fan...but when you read the recent books about George and the way he purchased the Yankees for "pennies"...and turned it into a Billions plus venture.....you have to give the guy a lot of respect.
....RIP
May he rest in peace and be remembered for having quietly used his wealth for the benefit many others in need as well as his ownership of the Yankees.
like world series championships!!!
Nice to see some of Red Sawx nation saying some nice words for the boss here...
RIP George Steinbrenner, and Bob Sheppard... Two icons of Baseball history.
Good riddance.
This guy helped turn baseball into the joke it is today and had to be the biggest pompous ass in the world.
Very Classy
He ruinded the game with his millions, overpaying players to the point where all they want is more and more. Although I do not wish anyone death, I truley believe he hurt baseball as we know it today. May he rest in peace.
deroty,
you are an ass. when you die and you will, I hope you suffer for weeks in pain and I hope everyone ignores you and cheer that the pompous ass is gone. Hurrah. And the same goes for you SuperSerial
Sometimes there's news that just makes your day. This is a headline I've been looking forward to for more than years
Too bad it didn't come soon enough to save Thurman Munson
Oooh Bad Form Maharishi...there are lots of Boston Fans posting nice things here on this thread. and yes, there are a lot of cigarettes in Boston..LOL Dumbass
Not a Yankee fan but you cant argue with legitmate success. I do remember him saying about Don Mattingly.."I'll never pay any ballplayer 2 million dollars a year" He's now probably earning more than that as a coach
RIP George
The world has lost another scum. Rest in hell with O'Malley you miserable excuse for a human being. The two that ruined baseball the most. They're down there with Hitler and Stalin. No one but O'malley did more to destroy baseball. He took it from americas pasttime to the money grubbing, designated hitter destroying, felon owner, manager firing piece of #$@%, that he was. Good riddance. Charlie Finley was a fan owner, Steinbrenner was one of the most destructive forces to the game that ever lived
Yeah, Finley was a fan owner who dismantled the Oakland A's dynasty with his cheapness.
Finley was such a Jekyll & Hyde. He was an innovator, and built those great A's teams, but when he turned cheap, he became a joke. In one of his last years, the A's Bay Area radio outlet was a campus FM station
AL-298888
You are incredibly ignorant. If you were alive in the 1860's you'd bemoan the Emancipation Proclamation.
The fact that you blame the designated hitter on O'Malley is additional proof of your galactical ignorance. O'Malley owned the Dodgers who play in the national league where the designated hitter is not allowed.
Your statement praising Finley is concluding evidence of your lack of cranial horsepower. Finley moved his Athletics from Kansas City to Oakland for money and he attempted to sell off his star players for ...money. The man screwed the fans of KC and Oakland in order to line his pockets with legal tender.
Wise up!
As a fan of the Yankee’s for over 40 years, I’ve got to say that “The Boss” defiantly built an empire that is second to none! I would love to see those arguments he had with Billy Martin… classic… It’s also good to see the red Sox fans out here “giving it up” for the single person that they all so loved to hate… in the end it’s only sports and its good to see that some people can see the difference.
R.I.P. Mr. Steinbrenner.
“giving it up” for the single person that they all so loved to hate
that is what makes a rivalry along with the loyalty you keep for your team. you never quite give up the unforgiven of your players going over to the other side but without those bits of disloyalty to the fans, the rivalry and shear enjoyment of the rivalry would suffer.
once again. from a bo-sox fan, RIP george. you've earned a peaceful one.
Condolences to the family.
To Poobak and Keav Grieve in hell for the scumbag of baseball George the scourge. Go pay your 2000 for a seat in Yankee stadium. Yeah George was good for George and the players union but screwed the fans and taxpayers of NYC any way he could. How is hell George.
How did he screw the fans?
I'm a fan, and the tickets weren't too bad (most of them). Considering that EVERYTHING is more expensive in New York than just about everywhere else, I'd expect tickets to be more expensive than Kansas City. We the fans want to win, and get the best players, and have to most concessions and access and comfortable seats. That costs money. You pay the premium for that.
Sad day for Yankees Universe. Sad week really, First Bob Sheppard, now The Boss.
He had the image and perception of a tyrant, but was also a quiet philanthropist. In many ways, his image as the Boss ushered in a new era of fan interest and media coverage of the Yanks, and sports as a whole.
There were many things that George did that helped the Yanks and hurt them. His reign in the 80's was terrible and his impatience precipitated the deep malaise of that decade. His constant meddling and firing of coaches did him no favors in the media. His constant pressure was a powerful force in Yankeeland.
But he was always willing to go for the gold.
George understood that to be successful, you have to take risks. You gotta spend money to make money. Here's a guy who even with his spending, wasn't anywhere near the richest owner in baseball. He took his revenues and used them on players. The better the product, the more fans showed up, the more profit in the end.
The best thing that happened to the Yanks was George getting suspended. It allowed them to finally draft and develop prospects, rather then trading them away for fading stars. That suspension created Bernie, and Jeter, and Mariano and Pettitte. The resurgence was led by Stick Michael and his scouts.
But you can't argue with 7 titles and 10 (or 11) pennants. No other baseball owner in that span of time is even close.
R.I.P. Boss!
G'night, George. RIP
Rest in peace Mr. Stienbrenner.
What many don't know about him is that he was a very generous and caring man. He gave a lot of money to charity (paticularly those that help children). He did so in a very low key manner. He was not looking for credit for his philantropy He just wanted to do what was right.
God Bless George Steinbrenner.
Like him or hate him we're all going to miss him. Hope they give him a team to manage wherever he goes next.
So many hypocrits out there!! Two days ago an article about Steinbrenner would have been loaded with "I hope you die a slow death" rants - today it's all: boo hoo hoo RIP George - He was a douche - the douche is dead - in life he wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire - in death he's a saint who should rest in peace - what a joke

Yes you are, a pathetic snotnose piss ant, that needs to be taught a lesson in manners. So, why don't you get off you Mommy & Daddy's computer, go outside and play in traffic. you're a keyboard tough guy, but, in real life, I'm sure you're a punk that I would have no problem stepping on. We'd play football with you, you would be the football, and we'd kick the crap out of you all day, just for the fun of it. You're a snotnose puke that should be back in Middle school, because that's about your speed. Let's see, The way your speak, yeah, you have a double digit IQ. So, please, do all of us a favor on this message board, comeback when you achieve a Triple digit IQ, and not before you loser!
xfinger: You sound more like the key board tough guy to me. Do you hate your mother also.
Oh, and if you have a triple digit IQ you sure don't show it. You sound more like a school yard bully. That must make your momma proud.
George has joined the Yankee greats in Baseball Heaven - where no doubt, he'll be telling God how to run things!
