This is hardly a sports story. In fact, it's hardly a story at all. Neither Elin nor Tiger has filed for divorce because, believe me, we would know if they had. Elin has made no public statement. Tiger quite appropriately responded, "None of your business!" when a nosey reporter asked about the state of their relationship. I'll believe a divorce is at hand when Tiger or Elin, rather than TMZ's "unnamed sources", says so.
In the event of a divorce, why does anyone think Elin would take Tiger to the cleaners? With or without a pre-nup, a reasonable settlement for her wouldn't come close to cleaning Tiger out, based on the information presented in this article. High-profile attorneys to the stars have said that $75-100 million is what they would expect under the circumstances. If Elin is holding something over Tiger's head to make him pay a ton more than that, then that makes her no different than the hookers who stockpiled text messages.
They both have to look their children in the eyes one day, and discuss what went down. I'm sure Elin wouldn't want her children to think that she was a gold digger who used them as bargaining chips to enrich herself and punish their father. I'm sure Tiger wouldn't want them to think that he chose to crush their mother rather than treat her fairly, as he already has a lot of 'splaining to do to them. After all, Elin has been his companion for many years and bore him two beautiful children. I've questioned whether she should have done more to prevent this scandal because I still believe that she must have known about Tiger's activities. But I acknowledge that she was very young in a very big, big world. In fact, they both were.
I'm sure speculation will run rampant for some time to come because the true details of any settlement probably will be sealed away from prying eyes. I wish them both the best under these tough circumstances.
