Washington Post: Beneath John Wall's glitzy reputation and swagger is a 19-year-old whose inspiration comes not only from a mother who worked multiple jobs to support the family, but also from a father who was born in Washington and spent most of his final 30 years behind bars in North Carolina.
Father's memory lingers for likely top pick Wall

too bad the author thought it appropriate to refer to the murder victim as "a housewife" - wonder how HER loved ones feel about John Carroll Wall.
Wall is a total zero of a person. Glad my school didn't recruit this one-and-done thug.

Sad story with hopefully a happier ending.
I hope John Wall gets some good financial advise or he will be like so many other black and white athletes that don't invest well and end up penniless.
John, between NBA seasons, go back to summer school and get your degree. You'll cherish it after your playing days are over. And, those days will be over whether through injury or age. There's always another phenom waiting in the wings to take your job and you'll only be able to hold onto it for a few years. Invest your earnings smartly and you and your mom will live a very nice life. Invest and spend foolishly and you'll be penniless and possibly end up like you father in prison.
Good luck and work hard.
When he was six he might not have known why his father was in jail. But, now? I don't believe it.
Very touching story. JW has come a long way, on a tough road. I wish him nothing but success.
I just hope this young man continues to revere himself, having learned and grown wise so young. I'll keep an eye on him and ask for God to do the same. Take good care of yourself young man. Say your prayers every day, please.
That is why your name is "SAD"igie. Because you are so sad. They all need to give GOD the glory, because when they glory in Self, this is when they begin that downward slide ( without even knowing it)
Please don't get the tat.
Im glad we will soon be doing the John Wall dance here in DC. He and Arenas will make one hell of a backcourt.
Its a very sad story. Lots of children of convicts grow up to be well adjusted, productive members of society. My father has been in prison since I was 7, but I did not use that as an excuse to turn into a statistic and fail at life.
It does not define you, and hopefully he will not let it define him.
To my thinking, JW is a PERFECT example of why NBA draft should not be allowed until 4 years of college. Education and discipline would teach and expand his thinking beyond the level at which he is now. He is a prospect for early disciplinary problems outside the gym once he has nearly unlimited finances.
only thought right now is the money.....sad, sad, sad.....he should go to college...if he is as good to be in the nba now......he will in four years....take the free education...not many of us get that opportunity...money is the root of ALL evil.....
I believe he will do quite well and I admire him and his family; he has shown growth and maturity in his life.. I do not understand the author of the article researching the criminal record of John's father and broaching John about it.The specifics of his father's past does not play an integral part in the story. Do " journalists" have any boundaries.
JW: Play, take the money, take care of your family, pay for your own education. A degree is worth squat if your unemployed.
If playing in the NBA is the only job hiring, you'd be a fool to remain unemployed.
