Long after the game had ended and the jubilant players had left the field, the U.S. fans partied on in the stands, singing, dancing and waving their American flags. Back home, folks who couldn't pick Landon Donovan out of a lineup only a few weeks ago celebrated his goal with die-hard gusto.
U.S. wins game, group - and lots of new fans

After being ripped off on the game before and having a win taken away, USA can through.
So good we won and the officials didn't rip the goal from us AGAIN. Shame on World Cup for letting that call stand. It's exciting we won today and now we move on up. Go USA!
GO USA..but please keep this wacko game outside of the USA!
A sport we don't play much here at..but still kick butts all over the world..proves how bad the rest of the world really is..even with their own loving sport!
The Americans never had a chance until they embraced this "wacko" game, Williams.
Try opening your mind.
Did they win..yup
Are they going to the final 16 round ..yup.
CASE CLOSED PAL!
play me another tune Guitarist..LMAO
Aussie Rules is way worse. The whole game is played like a jail break....they run all over the field smacking into each other and it's very confusing. Don't get me wrong, I love Australia, but their game is way more confusing than gridiron or soccer. Lived there 14 years and still didn't really catch on although I tried.
Hey, Williams, you're the one who called the game wacko-not me.
this was great to watch. i used to go to the san jose earthquakes games in the late 70's at little san jose spartan stadium. held maybe 10,000 tops. but we had crazy george banging his drum and it was friggin great. the best thing about this game was they won at a historical time in usa soccor history. even if they dont get past the next round-that ending will be seen over and over, but it was great to see and im not even a big soccer nut anymore but i really enjoyed watching this one because it meant so much and we have some good guys on the team. not a bunch of gun carrying gangster atheletes. plus ya gotta love the (drake), ending! nice work guys, now lets see ya pull another rabbitt out of the hat in the death round. 1 loss and its all about getting on the plane. but for me this game was friggin outstanding especially with that hollywood ending. we deserved that one bigtime. id say the country did get more people interested but if they win in the next round, there will be plenty of sites online that will be talking about team usa. hey al--how bout another 1980's " MIRACLE". A HUGE DREAM BUT SO WAS 1980!!
Great article!
(I'm English, so biased in favor of "Soccer")
The point is: it was a fantastic match! Even if the USA hadn't managed to score in "time added on" or "injury time", it would still have been fantastic - end-to-end - open, exuberant, full of skill and athleticism!
Forza USA!
(And now England face Germany, followed possibly by Argentina, Spain, Brazil.... whereas USA as group leaders suddenly face a serious chance of getting to the semi-finals before a real David-Goliath match-up... Time for me to apply for a green card!)
Go England Go USA....Im half british so have to root for both. With my friends and family in England you can imagine to good natured bantering thats been going back and forth. Hope US-England go through and we meet up again wouldnt that be fun !!!
Man that was a great finish yesterday !!!!
The U.S. is in the world cup? Who knew. Why do they fall down all the time and roll around on the ground like they've just been shot then get up and run away? Fakers
They fall down all the time and roll around the ground when they see your face. That is why you see it all the time.
Great game it was :)
Twas a great game.. Loved their hustle never say die.. To Mr Metal Guitar.. Oh you can't rain on my parade. ... you can't rain on my parade.. ....Go bang your head somewhere else..
why can't I find it online....
slideshows are lame....
grrrr.....maybe I should pay for television...nah
And all you "new" fans will forget about soccer after the Cup is over. You are band waggoners. You are the worst kind of fans. Soccer will never be a top 5 sport in the U.S.
If a 1-0 score gets you all wet then you really have no lives at all.
What a classy comment :(
How high would the scores be in american football if you only got 1 point for a touchdown? And hey while we are at it lets limit the players on the team to 18, and lets do away with that whole 4 downs and first in 10 and lets only allow two substitutions during the game ..........you know that would make the game a lot more interesting
You are right, Brian. The only time you see someone breathless in the same sentence as "futbol" in the USA is just after they've climbed a mountain.
Remember how Jai Alai was gonna storm the USA?
I think Americans will only remember this moment for a long time only if the USA advances far into this World Cup. Nevertheless I don't think soccer is anywhere near joining baseball, basketball and gridiron football as a major league sport in America. It's just not part of the fabric of America and one can even question whether there is even room for another major league sport on the already full American sports plate. In another month ESPN will be back talking about the pennant races, the upcoming college and NFL football seasons and, of course, LeBron with nary a word about MLS or the Premier League.
What makes this game great is that it is the players game. Even at the youth level all a coach can do is help with team shape, support, and make substitutions during the actual play. Coaches help their team at training by teaching them how to play. Approximately 8 million kids are playing this game now, I don't know how many there were when I started 30 years ago. With this base of players going for 46 spots (male and female national teams/23 per roster), the US has hopefully finally arrived as a contender in every international match they play in. The next 8-12 years should be quite exciting!
ummm the US Women's team is ranked #1 and have won the world cup twice and have won gold at the Olympics 3 times. The men's team has been ranked as high as 4th. It's all of these fair weather fans that come out because it's the world cup that annoy the @!$%# out of me. If the US gets knocked they'll stop watching and it will go back to the true fans who watch the sport.
We don't get a pass for what we have done in the past Cadet. There is never-ending rebuilding and it sounds as though you may be understanding of the game? Who cares if they are "fair weather" they are cheering and the game gained some fans here in the land of "stick and ball / NASCAR." This game will never go to the next level in the US if you and I don't embrace new faces and help them learn. They don't know what they don't know, and that's ok, once we didn't understand it either. :)
Can one of you big time soccer fans please explain to me why these " world class players" are always faking injuries? Christ, they are always falling down and rolling around on the field ( sorry, the pitch) like their leg has been snapped in half and when you see the replay they weren't even touched??????? Did you see where the guy from brazil got kicked out of the game when the guy grabbed his head like it had just exploded when the guy never even touched him???? WTF?????
They are not faking an injury, they are being fouled or embellishing a bit trying to get a call from the official. Not every player exaggerates like the ones you are referring to. Alan Iverson wasn't a cry-baby? None of the sports you watch have primadonna's or guys trying to cheat a little? Of course they do.
Soccer players are the biggest wussies in all of sports. They hit the ground and lay there in agony......what a bunch of pansies.
Remember all the excitement when the U.S. women's team won the Cup a few years ago and all the hype that followed about soccer has finally grabbed America......how soccer had finally become a truly global sport......Uhhhhhh, that lasted about a week. Exactly how long this fake excitement will last after the U.S. takes a bow in this cup tourney.
football is a truly global sport. on other hand le bron can have a ingognito holiday anywhere other usa without anyone knowing who he is. i cant even name a gridiron player. why is nfl not popular elsewhere in developed world where they could afford all the crap they wear?
Hey mrbunny....where the hell did you go to school.......obviously you aren't from a developed part of the world. Hate to tell you....the NBA is truly global and Le Bron, Kobe, Garnett, Dwayne Wade.......they couldn't walk the streets anywhere in the world without being mobbed.......soccer has no appeal here in the U.S. Get over it.
