Darn purists who are ruining baseball (once the greatest sport in the nation) will hold back baseball again and make some dumb argument about "people play the game so the people should call the game". Offers no content about anything.
Terrible call!
I agree with you 100% - That guy got robbed. We witnessed a perfect game even though it will never get into the history books. The system needs changed. This should never happen again.
On the flipside, I wonder if any "perfect" games or no hitters were that way because an ump called an out when a play was really a hit or a walk.
The problem with the perfect game is it also comes down to the umpire's judgement on balls vs. strikes in the strike zone.
So with that, do we start instant replaying controversial strikes or balls?
I didn't vote because I'm undecided on the issue. Perhaps with the right instant replay program, I would fully support it.
We start instant replaying whenever the situation calls for it. The Olympics doesn't consider itself above using technology to ensure that the calls are correct. The stakes are too high to leave to the unreliability of human perception...as virutally every pro sport except baseball has already acknowledged by instituting the replay. Where baseball (which is, incidentally, my favorite sport) ever got the idea that using technology to enhance the umpire's performance was, somehow, demeaning, is beyond me, but the latest SNAFU is all the proof it should need to realize that the time has come for the MLB to enter the 21st century and join the rest of its pro sports peers.
As I said in the Short reply - No umpire has ever made a call that changed the OUTCOME of a game. There are 100's of things that players should/could of done different to change the outcome of the game. This call did not change the final outcome of the game.
Gwaarin - As a coach I've always told my pitchers...Adjust to the umpires strike zone. You may not like it but if he's consistant (and the majority are) you have NO beef.
As a Detroit fan...yes it sucks.
No umpire has ever made a call that changed the OUTCOME of a game.
Ummm, yes they have. Hence instant replay in both football and basketball.
The money that players make is enough to demand perfection. Although perfection is unattainable, at least with instant replay, controversies can be settled with fairness and not the judgment of humans, which are flawed. Also, with instant replay you will eliminate the arguing, tantrums, melees, which always follows questionable calls.
Too many bad calls by umps who seem to think they are part of the game. Anyone notice the "family" groups of umps....all the people in the country and all these sons of former umps are now umps...DiMuro, Welke, Crawford among a number of others. How is this happening?
The "instant replay" could be used the same way the "challenge flag" is used in the NFL. In the NFL each team gets two challenges per half. In baseball, each team could have two instant replays per game and after they have used their two replays, then the umps decision is law!! It might extend each major league game by say 10 minutes per replay which isn't bad. The instant replay monitor could be in the home-team's dugout instead of in the locker room. That will cut the time for the replay. They can also have a fifth umpire per game and he would be the "instant replay" umpire. Its something to think about and maybe over the winter at the MLB meetings they could vote it into being.
That dude got robbed!!!!!!
That is a perfect game that will be lost in history. At least I saw it.
In defense of Jim Joyce he isn't a bad umpire and is human but a game like this is too important. I have no respect on the other hand for Angel ( I am bigger then the game) Hernandez and Joe ( I only want to umpire 1 hour games) West, they are a disgrace to the sport. Bud time has come to take a stand we the fans do not pay to see the umpires we pay to see the players and a bad umpire crew or a trigger happy umpire is a detriment to the game and a slap in the face of the fans.
I agree with instant replay. The rest of the audience gets to see multiple replays, with freeze frames, etc. The umps should be able to see replays also. Like football, however they should be held to a certain amount of challenges. This was too important call to get wrong and have no recourse. By the time the ump spoke he knew he had done bad but had no opportunity to correct his call.
... and they have how many vidscreens adorning most ball parks- most being four times the size of standard billboards? And when the IR gets shown on those, what happens?
They have the technology!!! USE IT!!!
Yes to instant replay. But I would support only 1 per game for each team. (One more than they have now.) Maybe if a team uses one and has the call reversed then they are allowed 1 more?
Only idiots and umpires think IR is a bad idea. Balls & strikes should be taken away too. There is no need for the players to be screwed by the umps' miscues.
the Human Element.
Jim Joyce: Give yourself a break. Misteaks happen.
Do it like college football. Give managers one challenge per game and allow for official reviews. There is absolutely nothing to be lost from that. Don't whine about the potential of a few minutes being added on to SOME games, and don't act like it would take necessary judgement power from umpires. It would allow for the RIGHT CALLS to be made, and no more BS like what happened to Detroit.
Some people view the flaws/missed calls of the umpires and referees in a game as much a part of the game as a player's error.
I wish in the poll there would have been an "undecided" category. I honestly can't make up my mind.
Missing a CLOSE call is one thing. Missing one this obvious throws out all the arguements against instant replay.
Each team should be allowed two replays for anything except pitches across the plate.
Instant replay can be expanded, but it has to be like the NHL. However, rather than call back to the league office, have a replay official, like the official scorer, at every park with a monitor and access to TV replays. Crew Chief goes into the home team's dugout, picks up a phone, and the problem is solved within minutes.
Someone please write me in and elect me commissioner of baseball
It's a shame that a perfect game had to come down to this. I think Jim Joyce will have to live with this a long time, even though he's probably one of the best. I wonder how this is going to affect him, especially calling balls and srtikes. Oh, the fans are going to be all over him. Please don't let him have to umpire a game in Philly. My point is this, there maybe a clause in the kids contract like so many pitchers have that state if he pitches a no hitter he gets an extra 50 or 100k in bonus money. Well, my question is, does management give him the money or do they stand back and say oh no, you didn't pitch a "no no". If this be the case, I think Detroit will step up and do the right thing. But you know what, the kid was a perfect gentleman about the whole thing and that shows class and so was the manager. Instant replay should be installed so we can get it right. At least it didn't cost a World Series or playoff game. Leave Jim Joyce alone, he blew it and knows it. What else can you do.?
At least Joyce admitted his mistake, unlike the arrogant Angel Hernandez who refuses to do so. I say fire him.
Selig is an imbecile. Changing the result of what would be the last play of the game to make it correct is a no brainer. If it happened in the middle of the game and line-up, etc., would have been affected for the rest of the game I would feel differently. But here, this clown needed to take a page out of the NHL book and make the correct call. The net result would be taking an infield "hit" away from the last batter, who had to know he was out on the bang-bang play anyway. Selig's handling of this combined with his pass on the steroids stuff all point to putting him out to pasture. Sooner rather than later.
To parrot a movie phrase: Hey Bud, did you ever play the game?

and electronically monitored strike zones would be two great helps for the game.
