This takes the cake for the dumbest thing the NFL has ever done.....who is going to be the halftime entertainment? Cold Play? Cool n the gang?
NC needs a first super bowl. And so does all the northern teams, western teams, and teams not in florida. Would you really decline your team hosting the super bowl?
I said "No" to every city. It's stupid to think it can't be like any other championship and have it be in one of the playing team's home town.
Make the Pro Bowl worth something and do what MLB does and whoever wins the "all-star" game (or "all-star subs" game) gets the next year's SB.
Screw the "it's got to be warm weather" crap. Man up and play where ever you need to play just like in the conference championship games.
Even Janet Jackson wouldn't bitch about her wardrobe malfunction in that cold of weather. They're fake anyway! :D
These are hard times we all are living in, so sympathy is something these people shouldn't be getting.. it's too cold, etc! Let all the states have the chance to profit from the all mighty SuperBowl...
I can remember playing foorball in the snow, it was a blast, but the weather isn't the point. I believe the point is rewarding the fans and the communiity that supports the game with the game's plum. If a team lets the weather bother them, they don't need to be playing in a Super Bowl. Thank you NFL for acknowledging the unrelentless local fan base and the cities that supports a team regardless of its success.
The entire purpose of moving the Super Bowl to a neutral site was to make sure that both teams had the advantage of playing under good conditions so a warm weather team is not at a disadvantage in a cold weather city. If the Super Bowl(NFL Championship Game) is being played in a cold weather city, then let's go back to the way it was before. The game should be played in home stadium of the AFC or NFC team. All other games are played like that and if the Championship game is going to be played in cold weather than there is no need for a neutral site. Reward those cities whose teams made it to the Super Bowl.
Except that let's say you're an outdoor Northern Team (The Vikings of old - and I'm a NYer) - to GET to the playoffs, with 1/2 your games at home, you have to structure your team, and your game towards the kind of offense that works in the cold, while an indoor/warm weather team gets to structure THEIR team/game around playing in warm weather
Now you get to the Superbowl - and it's assured to be warm. Which team has the advantage - the team setup to play in the kind of weather that you always have (see the 'West coast offense') or the team set is setup to play a more conservitive game due to harsh weather?
I voted that it should rotate between all cities, but in reality, not all cities are equiped to handle a big event - infastructure, etc. Also, weather plays a role more than just during the actual game - it involves people being able to get there, and safely, etc. Being a resident of Minnesota, even with all the good intentions and well-laid out plan, sometimes Mother Nature just will not let you do what you had planned. Not all people would want to plan travel to a northern state at that time of year for fear of weather-related travel difficulties. But, it would be nice if it could be possible...
Still - it would be nice for some teams that are used to playing in cold weather to have the option to play in it at the Superbowl.
It isn't quite fair and balanced when Minnesota or New England has to go play in Miami or Arizona in 110 degree weather...
what nfl team is from a city that can't handle a superbowl crowd? every team is from a big city! they handle the same size crowd when they fill their stadium every game. those wimpy fans that only come out in the good weather and can't picture themselves at a game in the cold weather, i say 'stay home'! Can't imagine that there are too many REAL football fans that are that 'sensitive' to the weather. Football is a tough sport, not made for the weak and delicate. let every team city hold a game. it might encourage some of the owners to spruce up their stadium.
I don't have a problem with the superbowl being in New Jersey. The climate may be warm in a little over three years. Who knows?
I personally think super bowls should be somewhere in the midwest (Ohio not included, What time zone you in?) The East and West media would be meeting half way and it would be a nuetral site because the only team that may have a shot at making it to the bowl is the Colts.
Anyone who remembers that playoff game between Chcago and Philadelphia played in a fog must cringe when they think of the possibility of playing in a snow storm or in subfreezing temperatures. That game was worrible to watch. I love fottball and when everything is on the line I prefer games be played in more tolerable conditions. Play a super bowl in snow where the fans have trouble getting to the stadium and that will be the end of cold weather city stadiums for this event
The Super Bowl is a multimillion dollar extravaganza that needs to be spread around the country. Many of the cold weather cities, without domes, desperately need the cash and jobs infusion hosting the Super Bowl would provide. All new stadiums have luxury loges that could be marketed, at a premium, for those corporate types who are averse to the cold or elements.
exactly.. i dont see why places like San Diego or Arizona get to reap the benefits for a league that Green Bay and Chicago paved the way for 90 years ago.. hows about a little something.. ya know.. for the effort?
Football was intended to be played in the fall when it's cool not cold and snowy. Colleges traditionally ended their seasons around Thanksgiving and played bowl games in southern climates (like the Rose Bowl.)
Playing in extremely wintry conditions corrupts the game (almost all other major outdoor sports halt play for adverse weather.) The NFL is a farce (witness their putting a regular season game in soccer mad London.) This is all so the NFL brass and their fat cat friends can party in Manhattan.
yea.. zaglossus.. the game was also intended to be played using leather helmets, a more bulbous ball and no forward passing.. Corrupts the game? Ever hear of the Ice Bowl? Roundly regarded as one of the greatest games ever played. Are you DAFT? go watch soccer.
I voted yes and then I remembered that Cleveland was in the NFL.
:( my city gets no love.
In all honesty, our stadium is beautiful. It would be nice to actually see a good game played there for once. And while i feel for the warm weather teams- the complaints about the halftime shows (not you Gunslinger) are ridiculous. Its about the football game, who really cares about the half-time show? Do people actually watch that?
Football is an outdoor game that is to be played in the elements. Buffalo, New York, Chicago .... all play their playoff games outdoors. Why not play a Super Bowl in the same COLD weather? Does that give a cold weather team an advantage?
Note to Florio in case he missed it: FOOTBALL IS A COLD WEATHER OUTDOOR GAME! Astroturf and domes/retractable roofs are an abomination...the elements are part of this game.
Clearly not all cities are even equipped for the entertainment, feeding and lodging of a Super Bowl and in many cases the transportation would certainly be an issue. But, beyond all of that, the Super Bowl should be played in reasonable conditions, i.e. rain okay, heavy snow and freezing temperature not okay. The whole show is MUCH longer than 3 hours. The almost always awful half time show will be a real hoot in February weather in NJ. As a wise man once said "If it ain't broke don't try to fix it". Green Bay? Please that is just a non-starter on so many levels.
again - who cares about the halftime show - its about the football game!
The half time shows always suck anyway. That's when I get up and go to the bathroom and grab something to eat. No big loss.
From a game standpoint, Super Bowl can be played anywhere, anytime. AFC-NFC champoinship games, which are often times better the Super Bowl itself, are played with no resctrictions. The same goes for all playoff games. SB, by extension, is the final playoff game. The game iself won't suffer.
But of cousre, SB is also about $. The way I look at it, most money comes from TV, and 99.99% of the people watch it on TV in the comfort of homes and bars. So no big deal, if the game is outdoor in a northern city. For the 80,000 or so attendees in the stadium, if they are true football fans, no one should bitch about it. If they want to be seen as VIPs, then they should not bitch either.
Yes, open to every market, and let every NFL city feel the pride of hosting the SB and make some money.

What a stupid idea having the Super Bowl in New Jersey in February! I hope it's 20 below and the worst blizzard in the history of mankind.
