The Oakland Raiders released former No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell on Thursday, ending a three-year tenure marked by his high salary and unproductive play on the field.
Raiders cut former overall No. 1 pick Russell

The problem is he is not 'immensely talented'. He's not.
I've been a huge Raider fan since I was 10 years old. I've stuck by them for 37 years...yes do the math I'm 47, and I cringed every time Russell made a start.
My biggest fear with him, other than another loss each week is that I've always wondered if he intentionally played bad in hopes of getting traded. It's possible he never wanted to be a Raider and did this intentionally. Now I fear that he will get signed by a team that he wants to play for and miraculously become the star player the Raiders always hoped and thought he would be.
If that happens I hope the Raiders find some way to take legal action against the bum.
With that said. It's about time they ditched the loser and brought someone in who actually wants to be there and has the skills to succeed! Go riddance to dead weight (and a lot of it).
You mean sort of like that bum randy moss. That's the way he did.Wouldn't even run his routes all the way throughT
Personally; if I watch any football at all.. it's the Dallas Cowboys (GO BIG BLUE!)... but I've been saying for a long time that the Raiders need to dump this guy.
It doesn't matter how "talented" he may or may not be.. if he can't LEAD.. he can't WIN.
Good Decision, Raiders.. now maybe you can CHALLENGE the Cowboys a little.
What took them so long? They should have canned him after season two when everyone in the world recognized his lack of talent, reluctance to train and get in shape, and his lack of football acumen. In my opinion he is the BIGGEST number one pick bust in the history of football. Al Davis should have listened to his coach, who apparently knows a lot more about football than Al Davis. Russell has $36 million in his pocket. Who wants to bet he is broke and homeless in two years or less?
Sadly, a 39 million dollar mistake.....paid for by.....drum roll please.....THE FANS.
Yes these pro sports teams have learned well from the banks. Why pay for their own mistakes? With proper marketing they can shift the burden of bad decisions they make to the fans. Those tickets and licensed apparel aren't obscenely overpriced for nothing.
They don't even need to put a competitive team on the field. "Support the local team.....We could do much better if you taxpayers would pay to build us a brand new state of the art facility.....Surly you don't expect the multi million dollar owners, players and agents to foot the bill". No no, you pay to build it and then we will charge you an outrageous price to see the games. Better do it or we just might move to a more business friendly city.
Baloney! Only Los Angeles had the courage to tell the NFL to take a hike. If you won't build your own stadium, go ahead and move. So now the NFL cries every year about not being in the number two television viewing area.
THANK YOU LOS ANGELES! You showed they need you more than you need them. Now if only the hard core sports fans would think logically and take off the blinders.
Only in America.
It's about time they got rid of this no talent bum.Davis should have listened to Kiffen at the start. He knew he sucked. He should have to pay back every dollar except for the games he won. This campbell isn't going to be much either.
Sucks that Gradkowski isn't been give a fair shot to prove himself. He won a few good games. However, Jason Campbell is a good quarterback. He was just on a very bad team.
Davis ... needs to step away and let his managers do the work.
You said "That means Russell has been paid more than $5 million per win, more than $2 million per touchdown pass and more than $100,000 per completion."
It isn't "and" it is or.
That means Russell has been paid more than $5 million per win, more than $2 million per touchdown pass OR more than $100,000 per completion.
Otherwise you just tripled his already obscene money.
