Starting next season, if a team wins the coin toss and then kicks a field goal, the other team gets the ball. If the game is still tied after that, play will continue under the current sudden-death rules. Should the team winning the toss immediately score a touchdown, then the game is over. After making your vote on the new rule, back it up in the discussion below.
Do you like new NFL playoff overtime rule?

It's not perfect, but it's a step in the right direction.
Right on!
I just don't know why it isn't in the regular season also.
Probably has something to do with the broadcasting contracts. Getting rid of sudden death wins via FG in the regular season would naturally cause more games to run longer. Apparently someone has a problem with that.
It at least stops the coin toss winner from just moving into field goal range and kicking the ball for the win.
Yes and No. I agree that something needs to change, but this isn't it. Something along the lines with how college handles OT would be more suitable, but start with the ball farther back on their own 45 yard line.
Yup...the college rule is better. Overtime infringes on the programming flow, that has a great deal to do with the selected structure. It's about $$$.
this isn't college the kickers are much better in the nfl and get paid to kick the long one. so i think this is the best way to fix the ot problem.
Now they said after a field goal the other team gets the ball then..what if its a safty 2 points after the OT coin toss..is the game over????
Would that be so bad? Safeties are hard to get. Why not let the defense be the star if they are that good?
Yes - the game is over... the team had it's posession and didn't score. The other team didn't need a posession as it's defense scored. It will be the same thing with a fumble/int recovered for a score.
Teams do it all season long and win by one point because they don't want to lose a regular season game. What makes it right to change the playoff overtime rules and leave the regular season rules alone? Change one thing you should make it the same across the board. The Saints just did what any other team would have done in a time like that and because they were the underdogs they want to change the way the game has been played for years and years.
I think it sucks! Either adopt the NCAA Overtime rule of both teams have the ball or don't change anything
It would be more exciting if it was just like college. After the first overtime you have to go for the TD and for 2. It is good that they changed the format though they can do better.
I agree with the remarks so far. Why not make it more fair to both teams that have already played to a tie in regulation time? Let the coin toss winner decide to play offense or defense first, then have each team start their offense on the defenses 40.
just play an extra ten minute overtime period.
And if no score in those ten minutes..only one can continue in the playoffs!
That would be ok in regular season games, but it couldn't work in playoff games because there has to be a winner.
No dumb dumbs the problem would be if you gave them 10 minutes what if it ends in a tie again? Which is why you have to have the game end on the loss of possession at some point to ensure there can be no tie.
I still don't think it's fair. Both teams should have the same opportunity regardless of who scores a touch down first. I still don't think that it should go on as long as college so I don't know what the fair solution would be.
Good idea but it should be in place for the entire season.
Perfect! Teams may choose to kick-off in OT...
Imagine the call that has to be made on 4th and goal in overtime down by three....
Safties and TDs still win. This will be great!

I don't like this change. If the defense cannot make the stop, then that team deserves to lose.
How would you know if the other defense could make the stop?
Maybe the NFL should run our government. Millions of people like them, they can come to a unanimous decision. And they listen to their fans.
I agree, then they could put a salary cap too!
It wasn't a unanimous decision, but I like it. I get tired of watching teams move into field goal range (and considering some of the kickers in the league nowadays, that isn't saying much for the offensive team). At least this way the team that loses the coin toss actually has a chance to win the game (besides getting a fortuitous turnover).
What if you win by a drop kick? Ha! Ha! Better than the old rule but still needs improvement. I think NCAA does it best. While you are at it, change the two feet in rule for receptions.

Overtime games during the season often determine which teams actually make it to the playoffs. Stop letting the regular season hinge on winning a coin toss and apply this rule to the first 16 weeks as well!
I agree with this in theory because it eliminates the chances of a team winning because of luck (coin toss). When two teams have played equally well for four quarters, they each should have an equal chance to win.
