They deserved every second of the wonderful and joyful celebration!!
I am so over everyone complaining about everything.
This has to be the second most stupid question I heard all week.
It's not like the girls were having an orgy on the ice.
They were celebrating their well-deserved win. GO CANADA GO!
If the games does not let them participate in the closing ceremonies, I will never ever watch another Winter Olympics.
Can't some girls have a drink and a smoke after a big win? Why does everything have to become a federal case?
Exactly. If it were the MEN'S team, would there be comparable outrage?
I doubt it.
It would be "boys will be boys, ho ho ho".
BS, PTAF. Not EVERYTHING is about gender. Drop the feminist self-pity and grow up.
Ricky: I agree with PTAF here. Case and point: Canadian Olympic Gold medalist Jon Montgomery walking down the streets of Whistler drinking from a pitcher of beer. Not a licensed area, people (including kids) walking around....not a peep from the American press.
But no one's complaining about him because he didn't beat an American athlete...
Bad screen name ^
If you've ever been to Whistler, or any other ski town for that matter, you would know that this is not frowned upon.
Thanks for the input re: screenname. I'll look into having it changed....
Anyway....
really? drinking in the streets? I believe that's against provincial law. "Not frowned upon" is an interesting way of putting it. Seems as though you've hit the nail on the head: what is/is not frowned upon and what is illegal are different. Seems as though there's a huge sliding scale with regards to what IS frowned upon. I guess the American press (and many in this forum) change theirs when Canadians beat them at something....
Did I mention I REALLY welcome and value your input regarding my screen name?
No, really.
Disgraceful, even underage drinking in public view. Where do you draw the line between celebration and excursiveness? The entire team should be forced to make a public apology and maintain the Olympic spirit.
HA! Apologize for celebrating in front of their home country's fans for winning the gold in their national sport. Sure.
Fred, get out of your pew and join the real world. A little drinking and posing are normal. They won the GOLD dude.
No one should ever be forced to apologize. Come on, chill out; let them celebrate. There was no disgrace here - let's maintain the human spirit for once and let positive emotion be expressed.
I'm confused by your term "underage". You do realize in that province the legal age is 18 right? And you do realize that the consensus of 21 being a legal age in the US came about in more recent history? It's also typical of late teens to early twenties to decide you have a great love of cigars (only to realize later you only smoked them because you were now allowed to do so). Now if the woman pictured sitting on the zamboni had run over a teammate or crashed it into the wall of the rink--that'd be a different issue entirely.
I believe the legal drinking age in British Columbia is 19, so the 18 year old (who could legally drink in her home province) was breaking the law.
If I'm correct, the article said she had a beer can in her hand. No one said she was drinking it. Hamming it up for pictures maybe??
Fred: we need to ask ourselves what is more disconcerting? Minute infractions of provincial law after a gold medal or the image of absolute sore losers burned in the minds of youngsters. Are we really that concerned about a beer or is it all sour grapes?
How about you pass along the message to the US women's team: kids see your sour pusses and think it's okay to sulk like that while receiving your silver medals. How about a smile now and again to show that you may be proud of your accomplishments? No, you didn't win. Suck it up, put on a brave face and be gracious.
All this fuss over a beer - and ironically, AMERICANS getting on Canadian's cases for grandstanding! I believe I must be taking crazy pills...
If they had partied in the locker room, I honestly wouldn't have cared. Going out where there were *cameras* was just dumb though. Fair or not, game on or not, they have an image to uphold, and they missed the mark.
They got caught on camera doing something illegal, come on now!
Underage drinking is against the law, therefore illegal.... what don't you get?
They did a great job and deserved their medal, but if this had been the Americans, words like "brash" "arrogant" "conceited" and many other undesireable words would have been thrown all over the place by the Canadians.
Snowboarder Scotty Lago was at a private party, away from his venue when someone used their cell to catch someone kissing his bronze medal near his butt and that wasn't good either, so he was asked to leave. If they're going to do this for one, then it should be enforced for all.
Again, were did you get the info that she was drinking? She was holding a beer can in her hand for pictures.
They brought the party onto the ice because they were asked to come back for more pictures.
The celebration was after everyone had the left the building, except for one nosy reporter who thought this was an opportunity to make a name. Too bad this will all be forgotten in like, 5 seconds, as will the photographer's name.
That blatant public display is indicative of college fraternity hazing. It glamorizes drinking. Even in professional men's sports they just spray the champagne over everyone in public and do their carrying on in the locker room. Just as these women atheletes should have done. I am for any excess celebration they want to do out of the arena. If any of the fans acted in such a manner they would have been jailed.
You don't watch many professional men's sports, do you.
They alwaysdrink from the champagne bottle after they spray it around. Guess because it's men you just didn't notice??
If I may add to hockeylover's sentiment re: "You don't watch many professional men's sports, do you."
RCD, you don't get out much, do you?
Give me a break! The most popular commercials for the Super Bowl are usually beer commercials! Doesn't that "glamorize" drinking? Why does political correctness have to be shoved down everyone's throats, in every aspect of their lives, just to support someone's political agenda? Let them celebrate!
Hey, hockey is all Canadians have to live for.... give them their five minutes of glory. I wonder though.... Scotty Lago left the Olympics for "behavior unbecoming an Olympian" and I guess I wonder why on-camera drinking would be any different, but I guess this is where the double standard comes into play. This is somehow ok because they're the host country. Don't forget, the legal drinking age in Canada is 15!
Well Lemonverbeena, hockey may be all we have to live for, but at least when we get hurt playing, we have health care to take care of us! Don't get me started on all of the U.S. problems I'm sure everyone is aware of. I mean, how could they not be?
Why are you such an ignoramous? Did your girlfriend leave you for one of the girls on the Canadian hockey team or something? hehe
Lemonverbeena, the legal drinking age in Canada is not 15, it's 19, and 18 in Quebec.
justanothername, for your information, I'm a married woman so your idiotic assumption that I'm either a lesbian or a man just goes to show who the ignoramus is. Get an education, and learn how to spell.
Not that I should even entertain your stupid rambling that has NOTHING to do with the topic, but since you opened the ugly can of worms, I will. I am an American living in Toronto and omg, I am MORE than aware of your healthcare here since I have "OHIP" which is a JOKE. Don't overhype something that is about as far from perfect as you can get. You may have healthcare in place in theory, but a huge percentage of people don't even have a family doctor and have to rely on "walk in clinics" which are on par with butcher shops. Remember that 13 year old boy who died of H1N1? WALK IN CLINIC PATIENT WHO WAS TOLD TO GO HOME. That is if the poor thing was able to understand a word of English since the only doctors that will work here are either from Nairobi or India or other 3rd world countries. Waiting over THREE months to start chemo when you have cancer or waiting an average of FOUR months to get an MRI and then over FIVE months to even see a surgeon, much less get surgery in Ontario is hardly perfect. Shall I go on or have you heard enough? Oh, and before you ask, if I don't like it, get out? Trust me, I'm working on it. My life and the life of my Canadian kids depends on it.
Oh, and the hockey team deserved their gold and the men may win the gold in hockey too, BUT WHO OWNS THE PODIUM???????? CANADA??????????? HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE THERE'S ARROGANCE WITHOUT ROCKS TO BACK IT UP TOOTS!
Eighteen in Alberta, nineteen in Saskatchewan, the rest I'm not sure about.
Actually Lemon, as Canadians, there are many things we have to live for.
1. Like thinking about others, instead of just ourselves.
2. Like welcoming people into our country, such as yourself.
3. Like acknowledging when we're wrong and trying to fix it.
4. Being nice.
5. Being polite.
6. Taking pride in being educated.
7. Celebrating our victories proudly.
Anyone else care to add some?
(by the way, Lemon...you sound like a real treat to be around...whoops, that was a little sarcastic. I guess I just wrecked #4 and 5. Let me make it up to you: I think you spell great. There...there's #3...see?)
that was 4 years of hard work to reach thier goals
let them eat cake !!! drink, smoke cigars, whatever, they deserve it congrats canada
Drinking a beer after a hockey game is traditional and given that it was in a can where is the harm!
Right celebration, wrong location. Tell them they were naughty and move on.
The question will never be asked if they were boys. They played hard for their country, they won the gold medal, let them cheer up a bit. Go Canada go!!!!
The "this would have been different if they were boys" is so tired and untrue. Isn't Michael Pelps a boy and didn't he catch much more grief for smoking pot away from the Olympics- plus he was filmed secretly!!? Both illegal substances. I agree we shouldnt be too harsh (Canada has been down since John Candy died, kidding). But, the old excuse that boys can do anything is so trite and lazy..
So true, Kevin. So much self-pity has been laid out over the "poor females' plight" that some folks fixate on it night and day.
Poor mistreated things !
They played great hockey! That aside, please tell me when men did this type of celebration on an Olympic venue???????? It wouldn't be ok then either. If my team had won I would have thought them to have little "class" if they put on a spectacle like this! Has nothing to do with which team you were routing for.
So they worked so hard for 4 years to get to this gold medal. Most EVERY athlete in the Olympics has worked very hard for 4 years, some through debilitating injuries.
There was absolutely no class in that celebration........
Yes, the Canadians went overboard in their celebrations. This shows no class, especially setting an example of the younger generation. There is a time and place for celebrateing. Thiese actions on the ice, was definately no class.
ar_dennis: Absolutely! I totally agree! Nothing worse than setting a bad example for the children...after all, I hear they are our future! Teach them well, and let them lead the way! I mean...can you imagine what a poor example it was to sulk after receiving the silver medal....oh....you weren't talking about the American team?
whoops. My bad.
This non-debate about fun times shows the usual pro-am Olympic moral hypocrisy, suggests a loser`s fantasy of reversing an award honestly won, and reveals media inability to discriminate between problems and petulance.
We have men and women dying in Afghanistan, 9% unemployment, a health care crisis, a Congressional circus unrivaled in decades, and people and organizations focus on athletes having fun. Try this -- imagine what books will say 20 years from now. Imagine who will seem silly. It won`t be the wonderfully gifted, hard working, intelligent, playful Canadian women skaters...
Let them have their fun. Canada Women have won 3 straight Gold. It's their national sport anyway, and it only means they have butcher women than we do. That's not necessarily a bad thing for the U.S. Besides 2-0 is'nt like some sort of blowout.
Funny thing is though, it was a blow out. And a good story. Atleast to the Canadians.
Perspective is controlled lately by spin that is in such a competitve cycle, our divisions seem to shine more than our spirit, and our sport is suffering. I believe the celebration is good for sport and spirit, and the spin bad for sport and spirit.
What would you call a 5-3 win over Canada on Sunday then? A spanking?
I'd call it bearbaiting. And then yesterday, you got bit.
Haven't seen many posts from Lemonverbeena since the Canadian run on the gold medals...hmmmm....
Wouldn't even be a question if the Americans won.
Are you kidding? It's the opposite.. American's are so much more scrutinized than the rest of the world?. If it had been Americans people would have said "look how obnoxious and cocky they are". Peyton Manning caught hell for just walking of the field and not shaking hands after just loosing the Super Bowl. But because it's Canada the attitude is "let them do what they want, they don't have anything else". Plus, smoking cigars? Thats obnoxious for even men, let alone women.
Total hypocrisy, PuckeyGirl. As Kevin so aptly pointed out, America is far more examined than any nation on Earth... because no other nation dares to examine THEMSELVES.
So drop the absurd xenophobic anti-American hate and hypocrisy.
I was present, and they were goaded to let loose. This would never be under this scrutiny if it were the men's team. Their celebration is blown way way out of proportion, and while not becoming of Canada, it is what this team is, and they should just move on to the real stories. Babies.
It's no different than baseball players celebrating after winning the World Series...if you've fought that hard for something you want, you should be able to enjoy a little wine and a cigar or two.
I could care less. Money used for the olympics could be better spent.
The phrase is "could NOT care less".
And what should the money be spent on?
Pragmatic: I say the money be spent on filters for online forums that boot dolts with nothing better to do than point out grammatical snafus.
