Celizic: Peyton Manning's the guy who's seen as the prototypical quarterback and is perhaps the player every NFL general manager seeks when assembling a team. Perhaps that will start to change now that Drew Brees out-performed Manning on the NFL's biggest stage.
'Magnificent' game cements Brees in NFL lore

Correction--"Brees and the Saints did nothing and Manning built a 10-0 lead. Yet Brees ensured the Saints outscored the Colts 31-14 after that."
The Saints actually outscored the Colts 31-7 after that, resulting in a final score of 31-14. In other words. we beat the stuffing out of them!
Go Saints!!!
The teams were pretty evenly matched meaning the team that made the fewest mistakes won. The Colts had three major ones, a dropped pass, the onside kick and an interception, and they likely cost them 14 points. They should have been ready for something after the half, NOLA has a reputation for risk taking. Their lack of preparedness for it makes you wonder about the new Indy coaching staff. The dropped pass was a boost for the NOLA defense and they rode it the rest of the game. NOLA made one mistake, the goal line stand where they didn't use their bigger O line (at least try it once)to push the ball over the lighter defensive line. But it didn't cost them much since they got the score back via an onside kick at the start of the 2nd half. NOLA's coaching staff was better and they made fewer mistakes. End result, a NOLA victory. Anyone notice the playing surface kind of sucked? Players slipping and sliding on it all game.
There is a little bit of revisionist history in this article. Yes Bree's hurt his shoulder, but that was already after the Chargers had drafted Phillip Rivers, well actually after the Chargers had drafted Eli Manning and then traded him for Phillip Rivers. The point is the Chargers thought so little of Bree's they drafted his replacement, the problem was Bree's held onto the job for two years. IF Marty Shottenheimer hadn't left Bree's in during that final game who knows where Bree's is today. Maybe the Chargers would have traded Phillip Rivers instead of letting Bree's walk. Oddly Phillip Rivers was traded for a quarterback who won a superbowl, and was a primary if not the primary reason the chargers let another superbowl winning quarterback leave.
You blew it as always, Celizec. It was 31-7 after the 10-0 start. You must be a Midwesterner...

Hey fourth estate, accuracy counts, WHO DAT?
From the Steeler Nation, Congrats to the Saints their fans and the City of New Orleans. Enjoy it all and soak it in. I'm happy for you.
I wouldn't heap such high praise on Brees. During two of the biggest plays of the game he wasn't even on the field. "Cements Brees in NFL lore?" I don't think so.
There is NO way Shockey should be mentioned in the same quarters as Brees, let alone the same sentence or in the same regard. Brees is a class act who has earned every bit of what he got in adulation on Sunday. DISCLOSURE: I am a Minnesota Vikings fan for life. Shockey is one gross reject of humanity who climbed out of the sewer he calls his life to catch a pass. There is no one who could find similarities between the character or struggles of these men. Shockey was thrown out of NY for being the piece of crap of a human being he is.
I thought it was a great game it looked bad for the Saints inthe first half but they more than made up for it during the second half Brees did a great come back
Excellent game.
What's with the hat?
I love Drew Brees, and am a die-hard, life long Charger fan. Your column makes some nice points, but unfortunately does so at the cost of some basic facts. The Chargers drafted Philip Rivers in 2004. He played behind Drew Brees for 2 seasons. From there, there was a choice....sign an injured quarterback who is a free agent, or move forward with your number 1 draft choice, Rivers. The Chargers did the latter, as many teams would have done. The result has been good for both Brees and for Rivers. (Though I would like San Diego to finally get that 1st NFL Championship!) San Diego and San Diegans still love Drew Brees for all he did for the Chargers and for the city, and I can guarantee you that America's Finest City was standing and cheering for him last night. He was and is total class.
Just to echo those thoughts above... San Diego still loves Drew Brees & many were sorry he left under the circumstances which occurred. He is a great guy and we're glad he led the Saints to victory in Super Bowl 44!
as another die-hard Charger fan, I'm glad to see the Author corrected on the history here. Brees going to NO was a win-win situation. We love Rivers here, and we still love Brees. If he'd gone to Denver that might be different. I have long said that I hope Brees wins every game he ever plays, except when he plays the Chargers. Hopefully that will be in Super Bowl 45!
MSNBC is WEAK for featuring the LOSER of the SuperBowl just the day after. Give the Saint their due. If the Colts would have won my guess is you could have found a week of features stories. Weak.
Hexham:
As a diehard Charger fan I am talking old school fan here from Paul Lowe days and a diehard A.J. Smith hater I feel if A.J. had not let Brees go San Diego would have had a Super Bowl victory. As far as Rivers goes he lost some credibility after him losing to the Jets, I rest it squarely on Rivers shoulders for that loss, because you take what the defense gives you, just like what Brees did against the Colts. But noooooo Rivers had to force long passes instead of taking Gates in the middle all day. I have seen alot of past posts over the years from people who could not wait to get rid of Brees in San Diego, saying Rivers was the right choice. As talented as the Chargers are they should have at the very least been in a Super Bowl, look where Brees took the Saints his first year on a far less talented team, that's right to the NFC Championship game.
