For tennis, he is the GOAT... bar none. And winning a year long GRAND SLAM, ie AO, RG, Wimby and the USO will only cement his Legend... his closest competition is not even a fellow tennis player but a golfer, and we all know where he's at right now.
Yes, he's the greatest player of all time. I think the pure numbers basically make that more of a fact and less of an opinion. However, the field is extremely talented right now, and winning all four majors this year is too much even for Federer. I say he wins Wimbledon, with Nadal winning the French (if healthy) and maybe Del Potro, Roddick, or Murray in the US Open.
No one has talked about Federer exceeding Niklaus' record of 18 golf slams. also, Evert and Navratalova have 18. so, 18 is the next number to go after. And after that, it's Margaret Court: 22? or something like that? Anyway, it's possible Federer could be going after 18 (even 19 if things go really well) by the time the US Open rolls around, so it would be very interesting to see if Niklaus comes to watch him at the US Open, in the same way Sampras showed up at Wimbledon.
It is certainly possible; however, if I had to put money on it, I would say no. Federer is certainly on top of the pile but there are still people that can beat him. He plays 5-6 matches in a Grand Slam (with 1st round byes) times 3 more tournaments, thats at least 15 chances for someone to knock him out. It wouldn't surprise me if he wins them all, he is that good, but I think it is more likely that someone will get the drop on him in at least one of the slams.
Roger Federer is the greatest ever. I have seen tennis from the ages of connors, lendl. I have seen great players like Agassi, sampras, Becker, edberg etc. but each have their share of weaknesses. Sampras dominated for a while with his serve but he never destroyed opposition the way Federer did. Agassi, Edberg etc have won several slams while Sampras was in his prime. They looked potent players even when playing Sampras.
Federer is the greatest ever. He makes the opposition look ordinary. The likes of Hewitt, Roddick, Murray, Djokovic would have won several slams by now. Only real opposition Federer had is Nadal. Federer had figured his game out. Now he can beat Nadal consistently.
Federer is simply the greatest tennis champion of all time. I don't think it is unreasonable to think that he could end up with 23 slams. Hell Sampras was still winning slams at age 32 and Fed's game is more complete that Pete's. If Nadal continues to have knee problems - and that is highly likely- who is going to stop him from winning 3 more French Opens. 1 more title this year, maybe 2 and possible 2 more for the next 3 years for a total of 23.
Who really cares about petty statistics? If Federer should fall short of completing the "true" grand slam, does that mean he has to take a permanent back seat to Rod Laver? I don't think so. You have to factor in the undeniable human qualities that make him a true role model. He is the Greatest Ever and his accomplishments are tough to match!
Ok, you win fedfanlogic, he's the greatest of all time, even though one on his contemporaries owns him 14-7, but hey who's keeping score, with fedfanlogic...I think they are both the best two players we've seen in a long time, love watching them play, but I'm pretty sure if Nadal beats him 10 more times in a row, still won't matter...can't wait to hear the excuses....
