No. 1 Crimson Tide took advantage of an early shoulder injury to Texas star quarterback Colt McCoy to defeat the No. 2 Longhorns 37-21 in the BCS Championship Game. It's Alabama's first national title since 1992.
Roll Tide! Alabama holds off Texas for BCS title
Seeded on Thu Jan 7, 2010 9:54 PM EST (NBC Sports)

Without McCoy, we're screwed.
You were screwed with McCoy, Alabama is running all over Texas and they can't stop them. Roll Tide Roll.........
Hey Springer, you obviously couldn't see the game thru your rose-colored glasses. Texas was on control and it was likely to be 14-0 with McCoy in there. But Gilbert couldn't pass during the regular season and is a major step down from McCoy.
Texas lost its leader and star player and that is the ONLY reason Bama is ahead and will rout UT. This game will end with a huge asterisk!
Hahaha I love sore loser redneck Texas fans.... Did you not notice Alabama playing CONSERVATIVE until mid-4th quarter?
By the way, how did Texas beat Oklahoma again? Oh yea, OU was missing 5 starters including their star QB who was far more valuable to his team than Mcoy.
By the way how did they beat Nebraska? Oh yea, several bad officiating calls and costly MISTAKES by Nebraska.
Did Texas even outright beat even one worthy opponent this year? I think not.
I wish Colt didn't get hurt.. I so wanted Texas to get their asses handed to them with no excuses. Hell I think Colt getting hurt helped Texas because it made Alabama lackadasical and overconfident.
Who names their son Colt? Are we still in the nineteenth century in certain locales?
no this 2010 and the rb's pa is locked up, is it a surprise to anyone?
Seems like a coach making $5M would have a backup plan if his QB gets hurts. I don't mean to slam the freshmen but why pay the big bucks if the coach did not build depth in the team? UT Pres says it's okay to pay him big because they FB program brings in a lot of money. But if not for the quality of the faculty and staff there would not be a FB program bringing in lots of $. I don't buy the logic. AL would have won anyway, they have the best team.
Look, Gilbert is a sophomore. He had to grow up real quick out there and you could see him improve with every play. Ultimately, he made it a game, at least. Not a fan of Texas, but I will be a fan of Gilbert. Texas has a lot to look forward to in the next few years.
Texas fan: Texas would have beat 'Bama if they hadn't lost McCoy just like Ohio State would have beat Florida if they hadn't lost Ginn.
If Alabama hadn't completely shut down the offense in the 2nd half, they could have won that game by 30 points.
I will hand it to Texas, though. They scored 21 more points than I thought they would.
david-604380-dont be a sore loser, all those boys played their hearts out so give 'em their due respect and chalk it up to the better team winning. gilbert stepped up and kept them in it, but in the end bama wore 'em down.
first time ever texas has lost to bama...
Bottom line colt needed to be playing. Alabama in all honesty wasn't that impressive. I didn't see anything spectacular like so many of the past champions in recent years. They beat a team who had to put in a wide eyed freshmen, big deal. They scored 17 meaningful points on offense and it was after texas was rattled as a team losing mccoy. There's a huge difference between a two time Heisman candidate with UT records playing versus a freshmen who hasn't taken one snap worth anything in college football. I can't even say Alabama beat the normal Texas team because Mccoy does so much for them.
How can a "national champion" like alabama let a freshmen with zero experience get the game back to 24-21? They beat a team who lost their leader. Texas came out ready to play and lost their steam after mccoy went down, it's a shame and I would of much rather seen both teams at full strength. Colt can pick defenses apart and Alabama's defense would of seen that.
toosano - gilbert is a true freshmen, not a sophomore.
Yes, thanks. I knew that, just typed the wrong danged grade, lol.
I'd say the majority of sports reporters were right on this prediction. Horns even with McCoy... Bama is the better team... and they are proving it...
This game will be a runaway.. its already got a good start. And Saban will show no mercy.
Horns were cocky. This ought to put them in their place.. a distant second when its all over. I guess Texans will call this a "wuppin"...
I love it how ABC's news media can make a players criminal, liberal, lieing, cheating, thieving daddy sound so innocent. He rips of people for all of their money and he is made a hero. What a fracking shame. Only sports in America can make a criminal look so good. And we wonder why ghetto basketball players bring guns to work.
Awwwwwww poor little redneck texas fan a wittle upset. Have another beer. Go drive and get a dui. Come home and then beat your wife.
El-Whapo, I also was wondering why they were mentioning his daddy waiting to be sentenced to go to prison like he was the great man. I would of disowned my dad and tooo embarrassed to mention him if I had a dad like that. BUT...................................................On another note.......this was no game. Not even at all. Horns did not have their great quarterback like Alabama had theirs and like 3 commentators said, "what would be the real score had McCoy not been hurt"...I think he played the first 4 minutes. I pray he heals quickly.
Typical Musburger garbage. Great human interest story. First we get Madoff, now Ingram's dad. Touching.
No Alabama fan is in a position to call anyone a redneck.
I know Chris - it's a bunch of rednecks out there in Alabama. Kind of need to think before you throw that out there.
Bama should win this, but this is where you put an * after the score. Texas looses their starting QB on the first series and is replaced by a true freshman, game over.
Go Badgers
One dimensional Texas... put the ball in MCCoy's hands. That's what the sports writers and sports commentators have been saying all along. I guess they were right... It's tough luck. But what is Texas without McCoy? I guess we will find out... The real question is whether Texas REALLY should have been the number 2 team.. This game is moving too fast for a freshman quarterback.
Yea.. kinda like Oklahoma needing to put a * next to their loss to Texas... Oh yea, and A&M and Nebraska.. Hell Texas shouldn't have even been in Pasadena tonight.
No asterisks allowed. Getting hurt is part of the game; there are no Mulligans in football...
true
If Colt didn't have the constitution of a china doll maybe it would have made a difference, but this is football and if you aren't tough go home. Texas can talk about what if and might have been, but the bottom line is the Beasts of Bama broke the boy from Texas and you had most of your eggs in one basket. I was very impressed by Gilbert though, I can't imagine having to step in like that when I'm sure he expected to ride the bench, great poise.
Chris game would of been dramatically different with mccoy. And he's tougher than you think. Hasn't missed a start and never been hurt seriously. It was an unfortunate thing to happen and in all honesty the way the game started off bama fans should be thankful he didn't play the whole game. There's a lot of pride with those texas guys and they showed up to play. They scored some quick td's when texas was trying to regroup and that was it.
I think Texas would of shown everyone a lot more than people were giving them credit for had mccoy played the whole game.
Like MACK BROWN said...
Seconds don't matter. Stats don't matter. Blown calls don't matter. What matters is "Who wins the game. What matters is who walks off that field a champion."
You couldn't have been more right Mack Brown... You rock.
Great 2nd half! Even though his a freshman, Gilbert did pretty well considering the pressure. Give him a year or two and he'll be good. For Bama, Richardson looks to be a real star as well.
I'm glad a school with such a rich football history won.
That said, Kentucky is going to win it all on the court this year. All SEC! Go Big Blue!
lee corso was smashed, drunk.
I think he was having another stroke
I dunno. He looked off for some reason. Looked a little like Parkinson's.
Good more illerate blacks now get to pay taxes when they get drafted. Reggie Bushes family was basically welfare scum before he got his payday.
"Illerate?"
BS!! Your comment is "illerate"!!!! Where did you receive your education? Dumbutt U?
and reggie bush is still scum along with, his whore kim kardasien
Kim is fun to look at, though. I tore her picture out of a magazine and chewed on it.
They can't be illerate because they are attending college. There are basic education requirements in order to enroll in college.
Well, maybe for some schools but "football u's" are pretty flexible in that regard.
negative
LOL... Texas people are the biggest cry babies and excuse makers in the country. Hey guys, the Alabama defense shut down your beloved offense any way you look at it. You lost the game to a better team. nah, nah, nah, nah, say hey, goodbye!
Being from Texas, I find your encompassing remark offensive. I don't care who won, for in my mind, there was another team more deserving of the title. BTW, do you think Alabamas #25 meant to put McCoy out of the game? I tried to recall the hit that #25 received the penalty for, but not certain. I should hope that was not the intent. Just wondering, where do you call home?
Bad bob...not everyone in Texas is a UT fan. In fact, many of us are glad UT lost so we don't have to listen to their arrogant fans.
By the way, the team that one, their quarterback grew up and played high school football in Texas.
Neither team looked very impressive. 'Bama would have been a 500 team in the Big Ten.....
You're not serious! And I suppose Florida would have been 500 in the Big Ten too? OK, the conference FINALLY had a decent year, but don't annoint them. Either Alabama or Texas would have been Big 10 champs. The SEC is still where the big boys play. We have the Big East here, and that's not even close.
Bwhahahahaha what a clueless dolt.. So would Florida have been a 500 team?
Alabamans here calling Texans "redneck": Kind of like the pot calling the kettle black.
Actually I'm from San Diego and went to Cal.. I rooted for Alabama. I spent 2 years in Austin.. absolute worst 2 years of my life.
Hey Utter-actually I'm from New York and I went there on business a few times. Thought it was a cool city. Maybe that's A)because I'm a "left wing pinko" (LOL) or B) I never lived there.
utter shock said yesterday that he/she lived in austin and was and called us all rednecks --didnt even realize that the stores in both alabama and austin were gearing up with the championship tees incase they won --glad you gone back to san diego -you must have been talking about the rednecks over there at that point ha
I went to Texas once - once - and once was enough.
Another guy told me that he went to Texas once, and once was one time too many.
California will spoil a guy, that's for sure.
@ Utter Shock, why did you not like Texas? Because there was no fags there??? hahaha.
SEC rocks! but with a healthy quarterback, texas would have won.
Nah sorry dude... In an ironic sort of way... Colt getting hurt helped Texas.. It fired up their defense... It made Alabama more casual and overconident.
Lets not forget Alabama played VERY PREDICATABLE, CONSERVATIVE FOOTBALL in the first 3 quarters.. No way would Texas have stopped Alabama's offense, and Colt doesn't play defense.
OK, Boise State and Bama in two weeks? I feel Bama would win this game but it would be great to see a true, true champion.
You almost feel cheated that McCoy got knocked out. Guess we'll never know. But I still think Bama was the better team. They would have settled down anyway after those early miscues, and McCoy would have been running for his life later in the game. I do think, though, that Texas would have been up 10-0 with McCoy after those two turnovers. Bama relaxed a bit when they got that lead, but like they always do, when threatened, they made the plays. Still would have liked to see McCoy in there, even though the kid is obviously talented. And what was up with that shovel pass call at the end of the first half??!! Congrats Bama. Musburger, you should be fried for that "human interest" story on Ingram's sleazeball dad. In a day and age where so many are struggling and fighting the good fight, it's beyond stupidity to serenade us about that guy.
It was said that McElroy has applied for a Rhodes scholarship which shows that some college players are good academians and not just football players.
It's a shame that Bama AND their clueless fans didn't receive the large dosage of humility they obviously so much deserve. ANYONE with a clue who watched that game or has ever played the game clearly knows Texas is a MUCH MUCH MUCH better team.
So yes, Bama was able to win without Texas Star QB, a multitude of VERIFIABLE game bad calls by the officials and playing against a true freshman QB who has never taken a live snap and whose first one ever was in the National Championship. With all of that against Texas - then Bama was able to pull off a win. Thank your lucky stars. If I were a Bama fan I would just say - "I wish we could have seen the game we all wanted to and that X is obviously a great team to stay in their like that without Colt."
I have received a lot of calls and text from my SEC friends (with class) who were able to recognize this and that this was not the game we all wanted to see, but clearly those on this page are not in that category.
Texas playing in a National Championship without their Heisman worthy QB is like being in a race with Bama and Texas trying to drive without a steering wheel. Bama fans should be embarrassed by how close Texas was able to make it without their steering wheel!
Awww little red neck being a sore loser.
Texas was lucky to even be i that game after barely beating a gimped OU missing 5 starts including a better QB than Colt.
Then came Nebraska and Texas needed help from the refs (and costly NU mistakes) on several occasions to squeak out a win.
Alabama would hve decimated Texas regardless of Colt's injury.. Had they not played conservative, predictable football -- Alabama would have decimated the Texas defense.
Texas Scoring:
2 field goals from Alabama mistakes
2 TD passes of fluke blown coverage plays.
I watched the game and have to wonder what you were watching. Typical Texas bravado. Next time bring a QB that's SEC tough and maybe you won't have to boo hoo.
buz12-come on man, really? that was a good football game and while I agree it was a shame to lose colt, you cant ever say that texas would have won, we will never know. bama had a great year, beat LSU and FLA to get to the title game, and won the whole thing, give 'em some respect and dont take it so personal...sheesh, so many disgruntled haters out there today, cant we all just watch football, hate Obama and his socialist ideas, and get along?
Can't make excuses about losing Colt early in the game. The great teams have depth at every position. I think the Texas coaches lost that game. With such a drop off in experience at the QB position, they should have done a better job of protecting Colt against a powerful defense like Alabama.
The decision to try move the ball downfield just before the half was a bad one. They should have taken a knee and hoped to regroup for the second half. And the play calling in the first half was not suitable for the freshman.
So forget about an asterisk. If you chose to place your hopes on a single player, that's what you have to live with.
Well said, Rob. Still think Bama is the better team, and they would have adjusted with or without McCoy, even after that shaky start.
It's a shame that Bama AND their clueless fans didn't receive the large dosage of humility they obviously so much deserve. ANYONE with a clue who watched that game or has ever played the game clearly knows Texas is a MUCH better team.

Buzz, injuries are a part of the game. Recall Ingram couldn't go for 3-4 offensive series last night either. Yes, McCoy being out took some luster off the game, but what I saw all year from these teams convinced me that Bama was still clearly the better team. We'll never know, but I think they would have adjusted even with McCoy in there. PS-he would have probably taken so many shots anyway that he wouldn't have been as effective in the second half? He's not exactly a big strong guy, which may hurt at the next level.
So true Stageleft! It really is a shame. This was by far the best bowl match up of the year and I for one waited with great anticipation to see it played out.
Saban showed a lackof class when he let his team run plays to score another touchdown with only 1:35 min. left in game. He was ahead by 10 points--just take a knee for 3 plays and the game is over--what a shmuck.
Awww another sore loser redneck texas fan. Let me call you a whahbulance.
Utter - I'm an SEC alumn (Tenn) and die hard fan - and I agree with carl.
“I just heard a thump when I hit him,” Dareus said. “I did lay it down pretty hard. I didn’t try to, but it felt great.” After hitting the Texas QB.
WTF is that? It sounds like this moron enjoyed injuring someone and knocking them out of the game.
I don't root for either of these teams, but this assclown should have thought out what he was saying before running his mouth.
Hmmm you don't root for either teams but you sure sound like a hungover redneck Texas fan. cry more.
His one moment of fame, and he blew it.
all i can say about that is welcome to the SEC....if you cant roll with the big dogs then stay on the porch or in this case the sideline...sure colt takes shots like that throughout the season but not the shots given from a sec defense
I took it as him saying that the hit felt great. For anyone who has ever made a tackle or thrown a block, a good solid hit (when you're the hammer and not the nail) feels great.
I don't think he was talking about feeling great about hurting McCoy.
Agreed. Hitting the quarterback (cleanly) was awesome in high school. Don't think he meant anything wrong in his comments; he's a college kid and he got caught up in the moment. I'm sure if asked again he'd word his comments more carefully.
@Utter Shock, I'm a Penn State fan. Live in Pa. I've never been to Tx, or Ala., but I have been told that Texas and Alabama natives are very courtesy to outsiders, but after your comment I'm not going to stereotype all people from Alabama as ignorant assclowns that you are.
hay boo boo you touching that its gone be impossible to drive across TEXAS!!!
ya'll just ride you horses else place now, I mean it LOL.
Signed Trooper
Let's see. You lose a Heisman contender on offense in the first three minutes and it doesn't matter. Watch Saban in the post game interviews. Saban KNEW they dodged a bullet, with a true fresman novice quarterback for God's sake. Pete Carroll and the others knew it, too. Texas D was at least equal to Alabama's D. Shut them down in the 2nd half. Texas is in positoin to to mount the WINNING drive with three minutes left, with a true freshman novice quarterback, who by the way did a pretty good job against the A secondary.
Hats off to Mack, Colt, and the entire Texas team. They took an impossible situation, and almost pulled off the impossible.
Wow utterly clueless.
Did you not see Alabama go into a very predicatable conservative mode for 3 quarters.. Do you really think Texas D would have held off their offense.
I really wish Colt didn't get hurt.... I so wanted to see Texas get their asses handed to them with no excuses for the hoosier texas fans.
It was because of this true freshman that Saban shut down the offense. It almost costs Alabama, too, once Gilbert started figuring it out.
Texas may have lost but the experience Gilbert got will pay huge dividends for them down the line.
