In a non-BCS world (I can dream can't I) the winner of Alabama-Texas would play Boise State. With all the bowls being played, they can certainly figure out how to play a tournament.
We learn every single year in the NCAA basketball tourney, that powerhouses do not automatically beat underdogs. You may be right 80% of the time, but you still have to play the game.
If anyone actually watched that game last night and came away thinking either of those teams belong in the top tier of college football then I'd like you to take a drug test. The field conditions could not have been better, in a dome, and the PSU/LSU game in the slop in Orlando was more entertaining and displayed more talent on the field than BSU/TCU and PSU/LSU were 2nd, if not 3rd, tier teams this year, both of whom would have beaten either BSU or TCU. Sure, any given day, likely in a game a major progam doesn't want to be in, BSU or TCU could win, but in a game with equal motivation, for instance the National Championship, these teams would be blown off the field!
diamonddug is 100% correct. I haven't seen any of the TCU or BSU games this year until last night and I have a feeling that if I had I wouldn't have tuned in at all (good grief). I was so disappointed that either of those teams were playing in a BCS game I ended up changing the channel to watch women's basketball. It was laughable but if you really want to understand how two teams of that caliber ended up going undefeated just go look at their schedules. It's a joke.
However Boise state went to the top BCS conference teams (Fl, ALA, OS, and a couple others) with a proposal to play them home and home series and being scared of losing they all refused that so than Boise proposed they would play them at THEIR home field only and again they being to scared refused and I don't blame them as they would of lost most likely at least 50-60% of them annually. This is backed up by ESPN that noted it on air this fall.
Thus there is NO doubt who is INeligible for a national championship and it isn't Boise...
Boise should rightfully be declared the National Championship as they won it on the field and the BCS automatic teams proved that by refusing to play them even with a distinct advantage...
All you naysayers just remember who refused to play them on equal terms (home and home series) AND then on their teams home field. It appears only the Pac-10 has no fear!!!
Stop trying to compare a college program with a professional program. These are college kids. The more commentators have to talk about the more exposure they get. Also, most of them will never play in the NFL. They are college kids! They need to finish their degree to have a life after NCAA. College presidents understand this even if ESPN doesn't. They get enough money from the bowls so they see no need to promote 1% of their students (football players) over all of the other programs in their system and drag the season on at the risk of injury and have their kids miss more class.
Well, now I would like to hear from all those people who kept putting down Boise State and said they could never play with TCU. Two great teams played. One team won.
I was one of those people who loved what BSU did in their last Fiesta Bowl appearance but didn't believe they could play with TCU. It looks like I was wrong. It's a good reminder of why they play the game.
Incidentally, can someone remind me of the reason why the don't play a real national championship game? It's not that hard- take the 8 best conference champions (who came in ranked 1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9) and play 3 games plus a consolation championship if you want. Granted, the rankings were far from perfect going in- OSU was below Oregon, BSU was below TCU, Cincinatti shouldn't be top 3 or top 5, and we're about to find out GT shouldn't be top 10 (or will we? I was wrong before, maybe I am again). That's at least 5, possibley 6 out of the 8 teams in the wrong places with 2 undefeated teams still left to play. It's pretty clear to me that these conference champions are the right teams for a playoff, and it's equally clear that the ranking system is neither good at ranking them properly nor any good at satisfying the fans in the process.
Again, it's not that hard! Don't play with numbers- give us meaningful football!
For you morons who think a good game has to include 80 points scored in a game. GET REAL.
What you saw last night was the #1 and #6 Defenses in the Nation frustrate the hell out of 2 very good quarterbacks. There is a reason the offenses struggled.
Both teams played lights out defense and Boise came up with more point in the end. But for you morons to say they don't belong is just self serving crap.
No, no, no Steve 686. What I saw was a pathetic and boring game where the entire offense of each team consisted mainly of throwing the deep ball up for grabs in hopes of a lucky catch, or a PI call. Neither of these teams belonged in this game, sure you're going to get lucky every once in a while by constantly throwing long - but boy was it BORING to watch. Reminded me of a flag football game.
Cincinatti was exposed as a fraud, and TCU and Boise couldnt hang with at least 6-10 BCS schools. Neither one deserved to be in a BCS bowl. What a boring BCS game. Weak offenses against mediocre defenses. Boise State would be a 2-4 loss team in either the Big 12/SEC/Big 10 conferences.
um...the big ten? please. i think the entire conference was exposed as a fraud the last couple years. Boise State beats everyone that is on their schedule. Last I checked, you can't get any better than that. And one more thing, hater, they're returning 21 out of the 22 starters from tonights game, so get used to it.
p.s- tcu had the #4 total defense in the country. and they played utah, byu, clemson, which are no slouches offensively.
And they beat the PAC 10 champ, Oregon. Don't forget Oklahoma a couple of years back. Heard the same thing & OK should have played for the national title if they didn't lose the Big 12 title.
Remember, Boise also beat Oregon by almost the same margin that Ohio State did in the Rose Bowl. I'm not sure if they'd beat Alabama if THEY beat Texas, but if Texas beats Alabama? There is a history of Boise beating Big 12 teams as of late also. No wonder they didn't want to set either of these teams up with a big power, and instead put the overrated Bearcats in against Florida. The big conferences don't want to get shown up. What a crock!
How is Cincinnati overrated but BSU and TCU aren't? What are you basing that on? It's completely subjective, then again so is your hype of BSU/TCU, but Cincinnati w/ Brian Kelly runs either BSU or TCU off the field.
Those of us who are students at Fresno State know what Boise is made of. Tonight's result didn't surprise me at all. Those decrepit old geezers who decide who goes where are still angry that BYU won the national championship in 1984, when they were part of the WAC. Boise would beat both Alabama and U of T.
Texas lost to Nebraska. The refs put time back on the clock to allow Texas to kick a FG; it was like the Olympic basketball final in 1972 when the refs kept putting time back on the clock until the Soviets won.
Wow. You are truly ignorant of the rules of football. There was 1 second left on the clock, by the rules. Period. Get over it.
From what I saw tonight, BSU would be humiliated by either Alabama or Texas. It was one of the worst offensive games I have ever seen. And don't even try to argue that it was because the defenses were so good- neither QB could hit the side of a barn 90% of the time.
Even if you combined TCU and Boise State and took the best talent from each team, they could not beat Alabama or Texas...it wouldn't even be close. Dude get off the sauce.
Skunk, you must be blind - there is not a single person who has watched the replays of the Texas - Nebraska game who can't tell there was time left on the clock. Granted they should not have cut it that close, but that doesn't matter -- a second is a second. And the Field Goal they kicked was not exactly a gimme either. So get over the Texas hating - the teams that played last night were a glorified flag football team.
Oregon was also exposed by Ohio State. Quit putting your season on a weak Pac10 win. Boise State would and deserves to be ranked in the top 10, about 9 or 10. Thats it. They proved nothing tonight, except they still need trick plays to win.
Did you watch Tebow play Cincy?? There's a reason he's the best - so get over it - everyone has one bad day - unfortunately it was the SEC championship. Move on. He surpassed so many records the other night - Vince Young's for example - and every other record as well. What's wrong with emotion Skunk???????? He isn't a cry baby - he's one class act - something apparently you know nothing about. He's considered the best of the best and will be that for years to come. Something you can't do thing one about. The Gators are a great team - 2 BCS championships in the last 4 years - Heisman tropy to Tebow in 2007 - and many other records the Gators surpassed in the last 4 years. Everybody wants to beat up on winners to make themselves look better. Guess that's you!!!!!!
Everybody wants to beat up on winners to make themselves look better. Guess that's you!!!!!!
Got your ass, didn't I? A "class act" doesn't berate his teammates on the sideline in front of a TV audience (and don't tell me he's trying to fire them up - he's blaming them for reducing his market value). Tebow is all about Tebow.
The Gators are a great team, and while Tebow may be a very good QB, he's also a first-class a**hole. He looks like a little bitty kid with those Bible verses on his eye black - "Je-sus loves me this I know, even tho' I'm a classic a-ho.."
Winners? Sorry to break the news to you, but Alabama is ranked #1. Tebow & Co. are also-rans...
The only ass is you Skunk!!!! Alabama was an also ran last year - in case you forgot!!!!! Every year someone gets to be the "also-ran"Tebow does not yell at his teammates - where do you get that?????? I've been to games in person and I've never seen him do that - EVER. Tebow has never been about Tebow - he wants everyone to do well - and he does motivate his team - on and off the field. He's a better person for knowing them - and vice versa. Clearly you know nothing about his family - where he's been - how he grew up. He is a class act!!!!!!!!!
My real name is Michael. I got engaged a few years ago, and one of my ex-girlfriends found out and told me that "I was nothin' but a dirty skunk." Never mind that she was living with her new boyfriend.
I turned the name around and kept it as a nickname.
Engaged a few years ago? Does that mean you have been engaged for several years? No one wants to pull the trigger?
No, we "went our separate ways" after awhile. Literally. We got along great once she had moved back to Indianapolis, because 2000 miles was too far for her to throw an ashtray at me (she would miss every time, anyway). I didn't mind letting her have her way some of the time, or even most of the time, but not all of the time. She told me that if a guy uses logic when dealing with women, it "isn't fair."
"Life is a sh*t sandwich, and every day you take a bite." --Socrates
Sounds like things definitely worked out for the best. What a horrible example she was setting for women everywhere.....I'd rather just debate college football. And MLB. And a few other things. And I will admit when I am wrong. Most of the time...
Jessue, your time has come and gone- Tebow wasnt the winner everyone made him out to be. Florida is a good team but not a great team. Tebow went out a loser and will fully be exposed to how good a QB he is or not in the NFL if he gets drafted
Did you watch Tebow play Cincy?? He blew apart records left and right - Vince Young's record - and many more. Tebow is the winner everyone talks about - he played his style of game the other night against Cincy. Florida is a great team - hence 2 BCS championships in the last 4 years - Tebow won the Heisman - McCoy did not nor will he ever. Again I ask why people always trash someone who is just an awesome athlete and incredible person. Now I will change my mind and root for Alabama to kick Colt McCoy's ass and keep the championship trophy in the SEC where it belongs.
If you want to play for the title, you need to play and win a tough schedule. Until these fringe teams start scheduling better teams during the regular season, no one will take them seriously, even if they run the table.
Either upgrade your schedules or be quiet about a title shot if you happen to win your easy conference.
Do you have ANY idea how often teams like Boise, TCU, and Fresno State try to get "big schools" to play them? USC won't TOUCH Fresno State after the near upset during the Reggie Bush tainted season. And with how well Boise handles Fresno, I don't blame the BCS schools for chickening out on playing tough non-BCS games, that puts a potential championship season on the line.
And FSU/BSU/TCU would skip the WAC/MWC in a heart beat if given the opportunity to show up the "big boys" in conference.
Big East/ACC/Big Ten/Pac10...those are the real teams needing to upgrade schedules.
Perhaps you missed the numerous complaints by these "fringe" teams like Boise State, TCU, and Utah where they can't get the "better" teams to play them. It's easy to talk about strength of schedule, but unless the NCAA forces the BCS schools to play higher quality opponents, it's a moot point. Maybe the "better" teams need to stop ducking the "fringe" teams.
Oh, you mean fringe teams like Oregon, TCU, Nevada (about the hottest team in the country 'til we wacked them), and who else, can't remember that other fringe team.... oh that's right Oklahoma. Signed....Bored with homers who've never seen a team play that wasn't in their own team's conference.
This year in non-conference play Florida played: Charleston Southern, Troy, FIU, and Florida State. That doesn't sound like a very tough schedule to me. Teams like Florida wouldn't dare schedule a game against Boise or TCU because they know that 1 loss is the end of their chance at a National Championship and they don't want to take that risk. Boise States athletic director tonight said that they'd play anyone, anytime. The big boys need to man up and play a real team outside of conference play if they really want to prove that they aren't a bunch of cowards.
Charleston Southern, Troy, FIU, and Florida StateThis y
Well you could be right. But the chances of Florida/Alabama dropping a game in conference play is much higher than Boise State though. So if you are a coach in SEC, why pile on tough schedule?
I think Boise State is a good team. Maybe they should go to a different conference to play tougher teams. To be honest, after watching Boise state today, I am not sure if they can go undefeated in Sec,Pac-10 nor Big Ten. In those conferences, anyone can be beaten any week. An example would be Oregon, they lose to Boise St and Stanford (which were beaten by Oklahoma). In my opinion, Boise state should just join another conference.
And for all those guys that are rooting for a playoff. I am against it. I think college football is about sports AND Academics. We are offering those kids a chance to study by playing football. Adding 2 more weeks of playoff is just ridiculous.
Well remember when Notre Dame used to take all comers and it always destroyed their season...other teams have learned from that and you never see them looking to pick a fight they might not win. Notre Dames reputation is @!$%# since they have gone to a much easier schedule....soon I even expect them to join a conference to make 10 wins easier, their only shot at another National Championship because it would keep them away from USC, Michigan State and Michigan.
The BCS is a sham. Segregating Boise St. and TCU, so they wouldn't destroy Fla and Cinci and with it the myth of "strong conferences" was the biggest fraud in many years. This way those who think that the ACC, Big East, Pac 10 and Big 10 are somehow "tougher" than Boise, TCU or the Mountain West teams that keep beating them can still pretend they aren't full of ****. Until there is a playoff, there IS no national champ. Period.
BoredwithWiners: (misspelled ya know) -- Boise State begged higher ranked schools to put them on their schedules. They told them they would go wherever, whenever to play -- they consistently get turned down. So, don't say that BSU won't play the higher-ranked schools. It's the other way around -- the higher-ranked schools won't play BSU.
The win over Nebraska was a crock - McCoy doesn't even know the rules of the game!!! He almost blew it for the Longhorns - but that's OK Alabama will show him how it's done in the SEC and keep the trophy securely in the SEC where it belongs. Alabama has a Heisman - Florida has a Heisman - Florida has 2 BCS championships - 2006 and 2008 - so you do the math.
As a Bama fan, I expect a tough game from Texas. Going unbeaten on a season now, in the age of parity, is a magnificent achievement regardless of how sloppy a win. While I'd like to see a Tide blow-out of the Longhorns, I don't expect to see it.
Did you see what Florida did to Cincinnati. The idea that either of these teams could hang with Alabama, Texas, or Florida is ridiculous. Just use the eyeball test. It is so obvious that there is a huge gap in talent.
Alabama didn't want anything to do with the Sugar Bowl last year, they wanted to be in the National Championship game but lost the SEC title game to Florida. It was a lack of motivation on Alabama's part and exceptional motivation on Utah's part, not a true test of which team was better. Your argument is like saying the Buffalo Bills are better than the Indianapolis Colts this year. The reason the BSU's and TCU's of the world aren't screaming for a playoff is because now they can run their mouths but in a playoff setting the teams they're upsetting in Bowl games will be motivated to smack them back where they came from.
"Seems to me that Utah hung with Alabama quite well..."
-----
Ok, since we're talking last year, how 'bout that Ole Miss Rebel beat-down of the Gators! Funny how that did nothing for the Rebels against Florida this year. How many teams that the Utes beat last year did they fall to this year. I could go on, but think you get the point.
Diamondduq... If a team doesn't come to play to win, why are they there? Lack of motivation is about the lamest excuse I've heard yet! One might think they would have found some motivation somewhere along the line when they realized that they were losing... or could it be that Utah really was the better team?
They were there for money and obligation, same as the Colts this past weekend in Buffalo but they certainly didn't "want" to be there. All you needed to do was watch Alabama's first 13 games last season and then watch the bowl game and it's fairly obvious their level of enthusiasm and effort was lacking as there was no benefit for them to show up, steamroll an obviously lesser opponent only to end up 2nd in the polls, possibly 3rd since they beat a nobody. Meanwhile, Utah had everything to gain by beating "one of the big boys" and were uber-motivated to show up and play over their heads. Like I said before, the "little guys" don't want a playoff because then they'd actually meet top tier teams who are motivated rather than degected by being placed in an inferior bowl against an inferior opponent and would be destroyed, if not the first game certainly the 2nd when they're busy "licking their wounds" from the week before.
Sorry, diamondduq... I'm not impressed with a team who won't go play a game to win because they don't have the "motivation." Motivation is the fact that you're part of a team, and you owe it to your teammates and to your fans to give %100 every time you go out. You owe it to the school who's giving you a free education in return for your best effort.
"What's in it for me?" Pathetic. Buck up and show some pride in who you're supposed to be.
Maybe that's the real difference between the big boys and teams like Boise State. Coach Pete would never allow that attitude on his team. Either commit or go home. And it's commitment and discipline and teamwork that makes the Broncos a great team their fans can be proud of.
In a non-BCS world (I can dream can't I) the winner of Alabama-Texas would play Boise State. With all the bowls being played, they can certainly figure out how to play a tournament.
A tournament would have put Texas against Boise and Alabama against TCU. In the end, Alabama and Texas would still be playing for the championship.

Wake up!! somebody pintch this guy.
Longhorns are and at the end will be the BSC Champs
I also would vote for a playoff.
They can be the "BSC" champs if they want...
But if TX wins over Bama... Boise is #1 in my mind.
Amen. Let's see a playoff system NOW!

Let's see, SEC, Big 12, and Big Ten weren't much to brag about this season either! At least the Gators aren't playing for it!
how bout you kiss mine and everyone else that lives in IDAHO they deserve a BCS BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP RUN
SO you must be saying Longhorns are the only REAL team from Tejas ??

10 of TCU's opponents won their respective bowl games. They beat several top-10 teams (at-the-time).
You have to play the game.
Well all 10 teams could have beat TCU last night
Maybe so... but you have to play the game.
And they beat the PAC 10 champ, Oregon. Don't forget Oklahoma a couple of years back. Heard the same thing & OK should have played for the national title if they didn't lose the Big 12 title.

Nope. Just a name. Is there a story behind "skunk" you would like to share?
See post below.

I still think Florida is number one !

Clearly you know nothing about his family - where he's been - how he grew up. He is a class act!!!!!!!!!
Skunk, you stink Texas would kill the Blue field pussys
Typical Texan. You don't even know how to spell "pussies" correctly.
skunk?
What do you expect from a state that gave us the first moron president?
You truly are brilliant. And so original. Why don't you have another beer, hit the sack and try again tomorrow?
My real name is Michael. I got engaged a few years ago, and one of my ex-girlfriends found out and told me that "I was nothin' but a dirty skunk." Never mind that she was living with her new boyfriend.
I turned the name around and kept it as a nickname.
I can appreciate that.
Engaged a few years ago? Does that mean you have been engaged for several years? No one wants to pull the trigger?
Wolfboy...The fighting Illini didn't even play, so stop with the Moron comments about Barrack Obama
Tebow is a douche, just like you. Get off his cock already!!
Boise State University!!!!!
Typical Texas comments. Nothing but steers and Q***rs and I don't see no horns on you!
heheh. that's original. now go bed down with your boy, wolf.
Dude, that's like, so 1982. Sgt. Foley would kick your dumb ass so far up around your ears that you'd have to part your hair to take a dump.
Now for a little inconvenient truth...
That's an inconvenient truth.
Going to be soooo sweet to see the Tide kick your Texican
looks like someone got turned down in the mensroom stalls this evening. calm down, wolfie.
asses.
I'm sure it's on the menu if you look long enough. Get back in your lair with the rest of your pack.
You wannabe lightweights go to a real football school if you want to run with the big dogs. Real football is not played in Idaho. Come On, Man!
You call that sloppy win over Nebraska real football?
Seems to me that Utah hung with Alabama quite well...

Ok, since we're talking last year, how 'bout that Ole Miss Rebel beat-down of the Gators! Funny how that did nothing for the Rebels against Florida this year. How many teams that the Utes beat last year did they fall to this year. I could go on, but think you get the point.
Amen!!!!
Well congratulations and be proud but Boise still isn't a top tier team and proved nothing with a lackluster performance in the Fiesta Bowl.
