Opinion: If only Tiger Woods had cheated on the golf course instead of off it. He might have recovered from that. But his "transgressions," "infidelity" and "sins" will always stick with him.
Tiger will never recover from scandal
Seeded on Wed Dec 16, 2009 4:44 AM EST (NBC Sports)

Tiger set himself up for this fall. Did he really think he could balance his family man image and 14 (at last count) women. His ego got in the way of his values, values which turned out to be as phoney as the image he tried to present to the world.
As for the women, I hope your 15 minutes of fame are up soon. You contributed to the break-up of a family and for what. Did you have delusions of getting the man? You are no better than Tiger. You need to use some of the money you'll make out of selling your story (and yourself) to seek help and discover why you find pleasure in causing others misery.
If Tiger had been a loyal and supporting member of the DEM party - no doubt he would have Reverends' Sharpton and Jackson out in front trying to quite this media blitz.
But he didn't - so now he must pay the piper for his transgressions ! The silence is almost deafening from the Rev's.
Think about it - isn't there something these 2 could be doing for Tiger - we know they have done so in the past.
Wow, you idiots can make anything political. So let me try. To bad he is not an active Republican, they could give him some pointers, lol.
The manufactured indignation is hilarious. His non-sports sponsors will drop him. Almost nobody really cares yet they all will pretend to care because they don't want anyone to think they don't care.
Opinions are like a$$holes , everyone has one. Thanks to the "FACTS" fuxing news as always they spin a mole hill into a mountain. Prove that "allll" these holes have been with Tiger, not saying that the one did. HOWEVER the fluxing news with it's demented low life writers don't give a chit about facts just the gossip. I till hope every darn one of they go thur hellllllo and back for the BS reports in their own fuxing life!
Exactly right. Although I think he'll eventually recover in terms of his golf career, most of his fans will never think of him the same way they did before. He must be very naive to think his behavior would not catch up to him eventually, especially since it went on for so many years. It's particularly shocking that he would risk his wife's health by having unprotected sex with so many women. That is unconscionable. He'll probably lose his family over this. I hope the sex was worth it. What a shame.
Sorry bro. You lose credibility with one line.
Arguably more serious? Really? Is that where rape charges fall in importance? These were charges for which he was not acquitted. She refused to testify after she was illegally named and dragged through the mud by tabloids. Bryant later agreed to pay out in civil court, admitting she must have thought he did something wrong. I don't think there is anything arguable about the seriousness of what Bryant did compared to Tiger. Bryant should have gone to prison. Tiger will lose some sponsorships, but still be regarded as the best golfer ever.
And no. Cheating on the golf course would not have been better for him. It would have been worse by a mile, which is why his people came out so strongly yesterday concerning any inuendo whatsoever of PED allegations.
Who hires these writers?
I wonder if Mr Lapchik (The defender of equality in sports) is going to do anything about the White Minority in the NBA
I read it is 86% black, C'mon Lappy, let's get this injustice corrected.
How about a reality check here... Financially, this maybe matters short-term to the marketability of his endorsements to women golfers. The men (most of the market) either don't really care, or are pumping their fist and going 'yeah!' in envy. Americans have the collective attention spans of gerbils. This will all be over in six months.
I will just say this, if it were any other golfer the story would be dead by now. I think the world has nothing better to do then get involved in this man's personal life to bring him down and destroy him.
Just remember this, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone!"
He made a mistake in his personal life, who are we to judge him? This is a matter for him and his family to work out. I pray they will!
Good luck Tiger!
Michael #64 - And had he been a member of the Republican party, this would be considered an initiation. Sharpton and Jackson usually come out for African Americans, regardless of politics. But congratulations on being the stereo-type that can turn anything into a political situation.
Tiger did something stupid. It's between him and his family. He is still the greatest golfer in the world today and i hope he comes back soon.
I am not condoning what Tiger Woods did as a woman who's EX committed adultery. But what about the tramps that knew he was married and still not only had affairs with him but are now dumb enough to brag that they were the slut of the day or week or month. What self respecting woman has an affair with someone they know is married even if they think he will leave his wife in this case GOLD DIGGER comes to mind, HOMEWREAKERcomes to mind and of course tramp!! Did these tramps not realize or care that they were hurting innocent children, with their mindset that if it makes me happy who cares I hope the sluts do not have children of their own as they would be too self centered to be good mothers, or do they just want a rich sugar daddy?? Again yes Tiger is a he whore but what about the tramps he was with they should be condemned as much as him and their careers should suffer as his does unless of course they are just high priced call girls.
I disagree with the author, Tiger will be forgiven by most of the public for what he has done. His marriage ruined? Yes. His golf image tarnished? Maybe, but only for awhile. Time heals all wounds, just ask Kobe Bryant. I'm sure his personal life will never be the same but his golfing career will be fine, people want to see the best play the game and he is just that! Say's a lot about our society, huh? Kobe Bryant and Michael Vick committed felonies, one was acquitted one was not but they were welcomed back into their respective leagues with open arms, why would anyone think any differently for Tiger? He just screwed around on his wife with consentual sex with adult women who wanted the "fame" of being one of his secret mistresses. Last time I checked that was legal in the eyes of the law.
I'm glad I don't have any young children anymore and have to try to explain this to them. I would not want my kid's to look up to him as a role model and hope that parents can somehow explain to their children that what he has done is unacceptable behavior.
This guy is sick and should seek professional help
Bloggit, I don't know about 6 months, but other than that I agree with you 100%. This too will end. Yea, females are going "ewwwww" on the surface but our memories do suck. Hell, I forgot about the Kobe Bryant thing entirely until the Tiger thing came out.
And yes, to many's chagrin, most males (who have a competitive bone in their bodies!) are sitting back saying "Damn, why can't I be like Tiger?!! The lucky SOB!!" As I have always said, the only thing that really seperates him for all the other philanderers in sports history (whether it happened once or 100 times) is he got caught!
Such bullch!t!!!!!!!! Tiger is human and to be human is to err.
Tiger above all things is a man. He maybe has a screwed up way of looking at things, but to say he will never recover is bunch of cow dung!!!!
Wilt Chamberlain once bragged that he slept with how many women?? 20,000?? And not one bad thing was said about him.
I am not saying what Tiger did was immoral or inappropriate, because it was both. And you maybe correct, it damaged his reputation, but he will certainly come back from this. Hell, like he really has to with all the money he has already earned.
I couldn't do what he did. But I don't think this ruined him forever. He needs to take time for himself and his family. He needs to take care of what is important in his life. Once he has his priorities straight, then he can come back to the world.
But Elin better do her part also.
Surely you don't really believe that, Do you???? You realize that in order to sleep with 20,000 women, at the rate of even ONE A DAY, it would have taken him about 55 YEARS to hit that mark...Nothing "bad" was said about Wilt Chamberlain because most sane individuals KNEW he was LYING through his teeth.
As far as Tiger goes, I get real tired of the "he's only human" argument. He was built up, by the press certainly, but by his own actions, as something over and above human. I for one didn't care to watch him on the course. With all his talent, throwing clubs, ignoring fans, and cursing was his way of dealing with poor decisions on the course. Why would anyone think his decision making off the course would be any better? (and yes, I golf, and I know exactly how frustration the game can be.)
As far as his career goes, I prefer watching golf when Tiger ISN"T in the tournament. When he isn't there, seems the press remembers there are OTHER golfers on the course.
Golf will be fine without Tiger.
(and ZOOCREW, what do you see Elin's "part to do" ? - couldn't really understand that comments - thanks)
great comment genafan201 ! Couldn't have said it better.
To ZooCrew - Get Real. Tiger Woods brought all this on himself. He committed Adultery....and made a travesty out of his wedding vows. And you defend him?
Exactly what part is that you self-absorbed mysogonist??(spellcheck??)
If Tiger had been a bad boy to start with this would not be a scandal. Squeaky clean is now covered in slime.
genafan201
First of all you assume the WIlt only slept with one at a time - his bedroom the entire floor was a mattress. 2 a day 27 years - 3 a day 18 years more than enough time - not to mention he lived in California.

Second TV ratings for golf are always sky high when Tiger is in the running and since Tiger the purses have raised significantly -
In 1997 (Tigers 1st year), the total PGA Tour purse was $70 Million +.
In 2007, it was $270 Million +.
Tiger will take some time off and the spin will be in his favor when he finally comes back. It's even possible that his golf game will be better with the baggage lifted off his shoulders.
You all need to understand that Tiger is the best golfer who ever lived. His failures are only magnified by his celebrity. The tabloid sharks are the scum who are dramatizing this. Money is the center of the whole drama.
I have to say, now I got respect for him. Dam he's the pimp. Too bad he got caught.
Elin has her part in this scandal. She is his wife. There is no way she didn't know something was going on.
And if she truly loved Tiger and the two children, she would continue to work towards forgiveness as she professed early on in this scandal.
So far, all I can see she has done was to go after more money in the pre-nup. Sorry, but that just makes her seem like a money grubbing ho to me. Of course, it was all on the advise of her lawyer more than likely.
But to believe Elin is the innocent victim in all of this, well that is just quite absurd. The only innocent victim in all of this are the children.
ZOOCREW -- Your comment is absurd. Tiger is solely responsible for this sad episode. He made conscious decisions over and over to commit adultery. No one forced him to do so. He took public vows before god and the world to forsake all others when he married his wife. His commitment extended to his subsequent children whom he has also betrayed. His wife and children deserve half the income he received during the marriage and I hope they receive it. If you are married we can only feel deep regret for your spouse. By the way, many pre-nup agreements have a provision which invalidates them if adultery is involved. Hopefully, Elin's attorney required this.
Sadly, I don't remember being invited or even receiving an invite to Tiger's wedding. Matter of fact, I believe his marriage was pretty much kept private.
And again, while I do believe marriage is between a man and a woman AND God, marriages are pretty much private and should be left that way. WE, the public, who have no party to a marriage should butt our f93king noses out and leave Tiger and Elin alone to deal with this mess they both created.
And Elin was happy with the pre-nup when they got married, so why shouldn't she stick to it? Oh nevermind, my opinion is that she knew what was happening and yours is different than mine. The bottomline, I think it is none of our business and the public should butt out!!!!!!
Frankly, I think if Michael Vick could rebound from brutalizing and killing innocent animals just about anyone could. Does that mean I agree with the behavior of either Vick or Woods? No, absolutely not. But Vick did serve time for the crimes he committed and though I don't care for him, it seems he does deserve a second chance. As far as Tiger goes, his issues are of a personal nature and these things should be between he and his wife and not the whole world.
If Tiger did not earn $1B as a result of his "squeaky clean" image then I would agree with you. But the guy is a dirt bag. He orchestrated an entire inner circle whose sole responsibility it was to set all these affairs. I hope his wife takes all his money and moves away. Elin is humiliated. I for one am very proud of her for taking a stand and not "standing by her man". Tiger should suffer the most extreme consequences.
John - I think you're jealous. Either that or you're one of the holier than thou, right wingnuts who can't find forgiveness in your heart.
Oh yeah, Elin is humiliated. She is just as much scumbag as is Tiger. If she really loved him as she said she did, then she wouldn't have pushed to have the pre-nup contract changed.
Come on and give me a break. Fisherman, I don't think it is the "right wingnuts who is pushing this crap. I think the liberals are pushing this mess. "If he were a bad boy from the beginning, there wouldn't be this problem, but his squeaky clean image is why he is in the trouble he is in now." The liberals are just upset they didn't think of this themselves.
You know, you people speak as if you know Tiger personally. I doubt you know any more than what you have read in the tabloids or seen from the TV while he is on the golf course.
How do you know that Elin didn't know any of this was going on?? You don't.
How can you be married to a person AND not know that he/she is having sex with at least a dozen people?? You can't!
And again, if Elin truly loved Tiger, and wasn't a ho for his money, then she wouldn't have fought for more money in the pre-nup. It isn't like the two children are poor and Tiger will not have to pay for them for the rest of their lives.
And about the children, how do you know that Tiger isn't distraught about losing his children, if in deed Elin leaves the marriage?? YOU DON'T!!!!!!!
Please, get the f()k off your soap boxes and high horses and come back down to earth. This is between Tiger and Elin and GOD. Tiger will pay for his trangressions, but thank GOD it isn't in your hands when!!
ZOOCREW, puh-leeeeez....haven't you heard of "hell hath no fury like a woman's scorn"? I bet the original prenup said all sorts of things about how Elin couldn't cheat and if she did she would lose all money and I bet it didn't say much about HIM cheating. It's a way to put a woman in her place so she's the one behaving. I would see if I could get the prenup changed too!
actually no its not. It is a way for someone who is rich to ensure divorce does not break the bank. its risk management plain and simple.
tiger is toxic
The American trait of mixing great athletic ability with some carefully crafted pseudo image of the perfect man is what should be questioned. Why people think a great golfer is someone who has great taste in watches, cars, phone service, or consulting is beyond me.  At this moment the only damage is to Tiger's marriage and to his endorsement earning ability. There will always be plenty of gawkers at the scene of a crash and this is a pretty big crash. We can only wait and see what it does to his great golf skills and his desire on the golf course. My guess is that it will make him even more private than he already is.
Yes, lol, I agree. Upper-end nursing homes might want to advertise on the PGA tour. I think it would be closer to their true demograghic.
Dear Iowa
I agree with your comments. Would like to add that this mud-slinging & those who revel in it, are disgusting. "Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone."
While not a golf fan, I'd like to see Tiger overcome all of this.

'touche.
It is easy now to see why his golf has been so eratic - from winning to not even qualifying.
IF he decides to focus on his golf, he'll recover in the headlines and in the game. If not, to paraphrase George Stephanopoulos in his book about Bill Clinton, even he will never know how great he could have been.
UM dumpledorf, "from winning to not even qualifing" That makes you either uninformed or dumb as a bag of rocks.
Wandering astray with one or two bimbos while married can be forgiveable. But going after 12 or more is as pathetic as an addict going after his next fix. I don't care who you are. Besides, his wife is drop-dead gorgeous. But, I bet now she wants him to drop dead.
Have you ever read about Hercules and his super-human abilities? One story recalls that he 'serviced' 100 women in a very short time and they all bore him sons. We've always looked up to heroes in mythology who became role models for the development of our culture. Tiger is just a legend in his own time.
fisherman 144
close but no cigar................tiger is a "ledgend in his own mind" is the true saying.
Good news everyone! I haven't slept with Tiger Woods.
But did you join a "well regulated militia" with him??
This just goes to show what happens when you drive with your putter.
Three things to say about this article's author in a country with the media attention span of two weeks...moron, imbecile, idiot
You are all so full of your self righteousness. He fell. He is going to lose a lot starting off with his family.
Back off and see what happens before you start with the funeral service and throwing your handfull of dirt on him.
I am a white female sr. citizen.
Tiger Woods is not perfect and what he has done has been done by Presidents, movie stars and other sports figures. He said he is sorry and he is young enough to turn his life around. He will now have to live his life as he should. When he do that he will give all you perfect people hope that you could turn your life around. As for his wife and children the best hope may be to stick together and really become lovers. Your children deserve to know they have parents that healed their relationship and started a better life. If you break up almost everybody that come to you will want one thing money. My prayers as a christian who have repented and turned his life around is that you do the same. I can't change my past nor can anyone else but this I can do establish a better future. Welcome to the human race.
He will recover.
People were ready to slaughter Michael Vick when his scandal broke. Now he is back in the NFL.
Tiger will certainly be back... give or take a few years.
This is not the world's business...Tiger was not married to you nor did he sleep with the World...I wish people would just mind their own Damn business and stay out of others.
The man is human and not perfect...so what? he made a mistake (Many in his case) but he can change and be forgiven.
As for being a role model....it's you people who are so hurt and disappointed in his action who made him out to be a role model...stop it! He didn't ask to be your role model. How about getting a life and minding your business?
Also, people didn't watch Tiger Woods because of his family values. I agree with you. The world will forgive him and he will continue to break records.
Actually he did put himself up as a role model, many times on television stating that family was most important, family would always come first, etc.
I've been trying to understand for a long time now why we seem so insistent that because somebody's a star, they're supposed to be a "role model." We act like we know these people. If Tiger (or anyone else in his position) is smart, when he recovers from this he'll either refuse to talk to the media or refuse to talk about anything else but GOLF (I personally wasn't all that interested in his take on family values...or golf, for that matter).
If you want a role model, crack open your Bible. There's a dude in there named Jesus that'll MORE the fill the bill.
Thank you. I couldn't have said it better myself. We as people go to our jobs each day and we would be horrified if everyone followed us home or remarked on every transgression we have in our private lives. Golf is Tigers job, that is the only part of his life that needs any public input. His private life is his as ours are ours. It is amazing how people get so caught up in celebrities lives that they actually get angrier than the ones involved. Judging is for the Lord but apparently society likes to play God. We all fall short of perfect.
most dominant athlete. I don't know why these news people don't get it.This lousy little creep is not a athlete. As far as never recover from scandal. That's good.
Self inflicted ,self serving, selfish ,sequence of events resulted in desert, just desert.
he probablly is an illegal alien fromV
All right, Buick, where are you, in or out? This is all about image, very little about real sports. Buick and all the other sponsors bought Woods for his image - the really nice guy, perfect superhuman golfer, squeaky clean. Now it appears he is just another professional athlete who let his money and publicity go to his heads.
Agreed. He will, "forever" have this scandal following him around, as will his wife and their children. As whose fault is that? Mr. PR himself. He still thinks this is just a PR problem that will go away. Not! Elin should move on and when Tiger finds himself face down in the gutter, maybe, just maybe, he'll realize that he's a sorry excuse for a human being.
Lets face it folks, people forgive and forget, quickly. The Kennedy's , Kobe, Michael Vick, Bill Clinton, Tiger is young and went a little berserk with his own fame and fortune. I hope he can save his family and repent. If he can't he will move on and easily earn through his losses. Life goes on and so will he, and like all the others before him, we will forget. If we can forgive the sadistic cruel behavior of Michael Vick so quickly how does this compare? Don't hate on Tiger, he's only human.Give him a chance to redeem himself, personally and professionally, he might surprise you.Btw, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone".
go tiger go
he will be back
next year it will be last years news
his current wife will be his ex wife and life will go on
new sponships will include trojan ( he will be the new trojan man and ofcourse cialis levitra viagra will pay billions and he could be "enzyte tiger" instead of "enzyte bob"
He acutally live the fantasy life we all wish we had
And so society will continue to enable these types of people by our support. We deserve what we get.
Wilt Chamberlain was not married and had not appeared on TV saying it was always "family first". If a single guy wants to lead a slutty life that is one thing, when a married family man who publicly states that his "family will always come first" turns out to be leading the kind of life that Woods has, it is the hypocracy that brings them down ! I will still watch him play golf, I will never respect him.
Dahlberg, you really layed an egg with this one. It's been three weeks since this scandal broke and you are already arguing that Tiger will NEVER (as in ever) recov er from this. You must be starved for a unique viewpoint because there's a laundry list of cheating athletes who have done so (Jordan, Bryant to name a few) and went on greater accomplishments. Your vague assertions really bug me "the Woods scandal has morphed into something never before seen in sports". Care to qualify that? Apparently it's unneccessary because you simply float it out there as if obvious to all. You even mention that Bryant recoverd from his scandal through time and success but never once mention why, under the same circumstances, that Tiger couldn't.
And finally, you should be absolutely embarrased by this little gem: "Even the sexual assault charges against Kobe Bryant — while arguably more serious — didn’t create nearly this kind of frenzy." Arguably? Arguably more serious??? What are you trying to say, that rape allegations could potentially be LESS serious than marital infidelity? You, sir, should be ashamed.
I look forward to the day Tiger wins another major and your journalist colleagues will whisper behind your back what a short-sighted reactionary you are. Of course, you'll probably singing a different tune by then.
Goofy is right! Biggest sports scandal in history? It's not even a sports scandal. How can you compare a private life thing to creeps who cheat in sports? So far out of bounds? Can't imagine the temptation that guy had. Not sure I could have done better. Seems like his mistake was getting married. Count one unphased Tiger fan. The guy's been such a competitor and such a classy and generous guy in so many ways. Personally don't like people who piss all over me every time I hit a bump in the road - why would I do that to Tiger?
Golf fans are up close and personal with the players on the greens, closer than to football or baseball players. Even though fans are typically pretty respectful, the ones from the country club set are also pretty conservative. Woods did something worse than having a fling. At least 14 women of not-great repute have come out of the woodwork, saying that instead of helping his wife raise their young children and supporting her during the first year of their new son's birth, a very delicate time for a new mom, he was out screwing one or more of them. It would have been a very, very different thing if he were single. But married AND a relatively new father? He was unfaithful to a wife AND young children. I would expect some of those fans to make their displeasure known, and I think Woods knows this. They aren't going to forgive and forget for a very, very long time -- if ever. And he doesn't need to work another day in his life. He was very sheltered throughout his life and has had not a lot of experience dealing with adversity. I agree that he may never recover from this scandal.
Man, some people just want this guy to fall flat on his face don't they!!!?
You could not say it any simplier and it is so true.... He will overcome, don't you think?
Tiger will never fully recover from this. Sure there will be some fans that will watch him now just to see him screw up on the course, but many many more will STOP watching him because of the disgrace that he has made of himself. The thing that will get to him the most is when he steps out on the course and gets BOOed for the first time in his life. He will not know how to handle that. My guess is the first tournament he plays in he will not make the cut.
Put a fork in him; he's done!
