The usual Heisman love affair with running backs. All I have to say is that Alabama would have won the SEC without Ingram, Stanford would not have progressed as far as they did without Gerhardt and Texas clearly would not be vying for the National title without McCoy.
But then, McCoy is from the BIG 12 and not the vaulted SEC. No bias there. Right.
Yeah, right. This is only the second running back to win in this decade - get over it. There were 8 quarterbacks to win against those 2 running backs - so evidence would clearly show a bias towards quarterbacks, not running backs. In the 90s, it there were 4 quarterbacks, 4 running backs, 1 wide receiver, and 1 multi-position player (Charles Woodson) who won the award. Before that, you could make a case of a bias towards running backs in most decades, but your complaints about the current voting is without merit.
As far as your complaints about a 'conference bias', that is without merit as well. For the past decade, the tally stands at Big12 - 3, Pac-10 - 3, SEC - 2, ACC - 1, and Big10 - 1. The 90s tally was Big10 - 4, ACC - 2, Big 12 - 2, SEC - 1, WAC - 1.
And to top off your ignorance, you make the statment that Ingram wasn't as vital to Alabama as McCoy and Gerhardt were to their teams - complete and utter nonsense. All of them (in fact ALL of the Heisman finalists) were vital components to their teams' successful years. Grow up.
And to top off your ignorance, you make the statment that Ingram wasn't as vital to Alabama as McCoy and Gerhardt were to their teams
Of course, the Hiesman is not given to the "Most Valuable Player" it's given to the best player in college football.
IMO, this year that was CJ Spiller. Not any of these guys. It certainly wasn't Tebow (I understand the nomination but it wasn't deserved at all for a very mediocre season). I would have liked to have seen Suh win from this group.
Obviously Ingrams final game influenced the voting, McCoys lackluster performance ended his chances in the last game. But realistically, niether of these guys were "the best" at their position in all of college football.
Congratulation to Mark.Sorry people ever body can not win just one. Ever body that was there deserved to win and they are all winners.I really thought McCoy would win but I believe he came in third. It is like picking the winner of the Hooters beauty contest it is very hard.I am an Alabama fan and proud to be so. Maybe it is just the first of many things good to happen to the Alabama team and may we have many more.Ever on of these young men that were nominated for the Heisman are winners and I hope they are a bigger success in life.
Congratulations, Mark! I knew you would receive this! I am a proud fan of the tide. This year looks great. We have the Heisman and we are going to bring home our 13th national championship! Roll Tide!
No offense to Ingram or Ingram fans, but Suh should've won the Heisman, hands down. Every time he was on the field, a sack or tackle for loss was pretty much a gauranteed thing. Nobody could change a game as quickly as Suh. What's that old adage, "offense wins games?" I don't believe that for a minute...sure, offense puts up the points, but it's the defense that puts the opposing team on their backs, and nobody did that better than Suh, just look at his numbers.
Bama hadn't had a winner because of the dislike and lack of respect held against it by sportswriters. Even this week, the majority of SI's sportswriters said they had voted for Suh. Not one of the SI sportswriters voted for Ingram, even though the running back earned his award and Bama has played perfectly all year. You really can't say Suh should've won for two reasons. First, he didn't win. He didn't come close. Second, he's a defensive player. The award is dominated by offensive players. Third, I can't think of a reason why a player from Nebraska should even be considered for the award.
A player from Nebraska should be considered for the award because he was one of the best this year. How can you sit there and say, when you look at game tape of Suh, that he shouldn't be considered? Dude's a beast, 6'4, 302...probably the top defensive player taken this coming April.
Probably the best? Nope. IS the best. No contest. He's better than Gerald McCoy from OU and he's pretty good. Top DLineman taken overall. Not even close. Would love to start a defense around those two guys!
Congrats to Ingram and Bama. Would have liked for Colt to have won it but at least now he won't have the BIG BULLSEYE on his back. Ingram will. This will motivate the Texas Defense.
Props to the Gators for a good season and a great run for the last 3 years. . .Bama fan here but if Ingram didn't win it would have liked to see Tbow win a second just because he is a classy person.
Really, so Toby who led the nation in rushing and made Stanford a good team was worth only 1/10 of the votes. Toby will be a top ten draft pick and he will start in the NFL next year. Yea your right TexasXmas he sucks.
Get over it Horn fan. I would make other plans for January 7, 2010. Watching that game is not something you want to do. No I am not a Texas hater. I am a realist. The only 2 real teams you played, OU and Nebraska allowed you a combined 2 TD's and 5 field goals. One was without its own Heisman winner and a slew of other NFL bound players on offense and the other had no offense to scare anyone. Now you get to play a team who can play defense like those two and HAS a real offense, 100% healthy to worry about. I am not a gambling guy but if I were, I'd take Bama and give 7 all day.... everyday. Too bad you're not playing Cincinatti or TCU. But alas the BS bowl system won't let the little guy throw a wrench into their perfect world. So be sort of happy with what you've got and get ready to cry. Oh and BTW...Colt is a class guy who's had a wonderful career. I feel badly for him. He just went out and played every game like it was his last. Not his fault that Mac can't find a running back to take some heat off of him or an Oline that can't run block.
Well, after all is said and done, Texas should stifle Mr. Heisman Ingram and Bama in the title game and prove the Voters (sports writers) to be the buffoons they are.
David, do you also whine about the officials when the Cowboys lose a game (or about Pittsburgh's 6th Super Bowl game because of a "bad call")? Let's face it--Tebow, McCoy and Ingram all praise God for their accomplishments--God wanted Ingram to win the Heisman. If Texas plays against Alabma like it did against Nebraska (no knock against Nebrasks because their defense was awesome), Alabama routs Texas.
Well, that figures... All the "in the loop" sources, said they we're looking for a "non-QB" candidate. Figures... Even though Colt is the most influential player on his squad or league. NON of the other players had as much influence on his teams success as Colt McCoy. NON of the other plaers have a resume like Colt's.... Yep boy's he got robbed.....
Doc, in a game of head-to-head, he beat the hell out of McCoy. You want to talk influential? That's it. He nearly rendered the entire Texas offense null and void. He caught Colt from behind more than once and was being double and triple teamed throughout the game. Yes Colt's resume is good and I think he's a very good player and its hardly his fault that Mac can't seem to find a running back to help him. Ingram carried Bama more than once with fewer touches than a QB and they would not be in the title game without him. I do agree that the Heisman has become a joke in that the voters and former winners are clearly regionally biased and biased against defensive standouts as well. It is what it is. Heck Gerhart posted the most influential numbers of all three but Stanford is 8-4. He did his part though. They'd be 4-8 without him.
Apparently Doc you live on another planet!!! Tebow not only has a Heisman - he and the Gators won the BCS in 2006 AND 2008 - so to say that McCoy is better than everyone else is crazy. The most influential player?? Clearly you didn't hear McCoy talk to Tebow about how to get a huge plaque at the entrance to their stadium like is at the entrance to the Gator stadium. Tebow not only has won the Heisman - he was nominated 3 times - which is a rare occurence - and that wouldn't have happened if he wasn't the simply spectacular person that he is - a person who care about people - who cares about his team - and knows that at the end of the day football is just a game and that there is more to life than football. I give Colt McCoy his due - but he is not the most influential player - there are others who do the same for their teams and lead them to national championships - more than once. He has had a great college football career at Texas - but to say he's the best just isn't quite right. I enjoyed watching Tebow and McCoy talk to each other on the clip they showed during the Heisman show - clearly they are both genuinely nice guys with lots going for them. Time will tell as to how Texas does at the BCS. McCoy also said he'd rather be playing Tebow and the Gators - just to see how they'd match up. I too would have liked to have seen that game - as would a good friend of mine who lives in Houston. Such is life. Next year will be a whole new ballgame - no Tebow - no McCoy - not sure about Bradford - but he's a junior so maybe it will be his year so long as he doesn't get hurt. The Gators have a really good QB waiting to step into the spotlight - Brantley - he is a really good passer - so we'll see what happens. GO GATORS!
One more comment - congratulations to Mark Ingram - you were one of five deserving candidates - you won it - ENJOY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So glad to see someone other than Tebow or McCoy...congratulations to Toby Gerhardt...loved watching him play this year in the Pac 10. If you live on the west coast...then you know he was the most interesting player to watch all year.
Congratulations Mark Ingram, from a lifelong Crimson Tide fan. Without a doubt, Coach Paul 'Bear' Bryant is looking down from above with a big grin of approval also. Roll Tide!
McCoy should have won last year. Texas will beat Bama in the championship game and McCoy will be the star. Reminds me of Vince getting screwed and the award being given to that no-talent bush.
Dude, check the stats from last year! Bradford was the best QB, hands down and WILL play at the next level. Will Colt? Yes Bush was and is a loser and Vince had the last laugh......take heart that he made the Heisman voters look completely stupid. As for McCoy being the star? He is in a one-dimensional offense. McCoy run, McCoy pass.....good luck with that against Bama.
Let me just enter a post on behalf of the majority of commenters above: SOUR GRAPES!!
The so-called football experts who can't even compose a complete sentence with proper grammar and spelling, probably could not find their way to class if they were to go to college - no, strike that - high school, hunkered in mom's basement venting via computer are pathetic.
Congratulations, Mark! You are a classy kid who had a great season, and fully deserve this honor. As you yourself said, others also deserve it, but that is immaterial. You got it, and from all indications will live up to the standards it implies.
Frog that was harsh guy! :-) But true....amazing, even with spellcheck, that there is so much of that on here! One of those "things to scratch your head about".
Wow this is a refreshing bunch on the forum today! I posted yesterday that Suh is the best college football player period. What other defensive player in the country do O-Coordinators make game plans around? Not even close. I also posted that Ingram would win and Gerhart would be second and these are the only THREE guys who should have been in New York. These were the legit contenders based on an entire season of work and where their respective teams finished. Some bozo posted that Bama would have won the SEC without him???? Are you kidding me? Shut up. No he didn't average 200+ ypg. He plays in the SEC which team by team stops the run FIRST. This is not the WAC or the Pac10. He is as deserving a winner as the other TWO serious candidates, Gerhart and Suh. All are game changers who can take a game over. Just ask Colt and check with USC about Gerhart. Congrats to Mark Ingram and best wishes in the title game. Show everyone why you were deserving.
WHY DON'T ALL OF YOU PEOPLE GROW UP?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?
All of the finalists were worthy of the award - and each of them deserves respect and congratulations for their hard work and excellent performances this season. The fact that this was the closest Heisman vote in history should only be taken as a compliment to them all. Ingram won - it's over.
The usual Heisman love affair with running backs. All I have to say is that Alabama would have won the SEC without Ingram, Stanford would not have progressed as far as they did without Gerhardt and Texas clearly would not be vying for the National title without McCoy.

Aw, the "bias" against the Big 12 card. So, what do you attribute to Bradford beating out McCoy last year?
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Yeah, right. This is only the second running back to win in this decade - get over it. Love Affair with RBs?
Lately the Hiesmans have been all going to QBs.
The real shameful part was the CJ Spiller was not considered. Which was ridiculous.
It goes to "The Best Player" in college football. It's not an MVP award.
I was happy that they put Suh from Nebraska in the running. Haven't seen a defensive player nominated in sometime.
Of course, the Hiesman is not given to the "Most Valuable Player" it's given to the best player in college football.

Suh should have won. What do you think Ingram's and Gerhardt's numbers would look look like if they played against Suh every week? Suh was robbed.
Suh is a good player. . .Nebraska overall is a joke. . .go win some games maybe even your puny division and perhaps you might have a chance.
Suh is good player, probably the best there is. As for your insulting and mean comments, they are only words from someone who probably hasn't a clue.
Have a nice day.
Bama hadn't had a winner because of the dislike and lack of respect held against it by sportswriters. Even this week, the majority of SI's sportswriters said they had voted for Suh. You fella's played some good football.
But i am still a Gator fan..Orange and Blue.
You beat US now please beat Texas.
Props to the Gators for a good season and a great run for the last 3 years. . .Bama fan here but if Ingram didn't win it would have liked to see Tbow win a second just because he is a classy person.
Congratulations to Ingram for averaging ~ 120 yds per game playing for
a top football program surrounded by pro-bound offensive lineman--super accomplishment!
The heisman award has become a media fest hype award--all about money and media ratings--
Oh two of the top heisman candidates are playing on teams for the national championship!--What a coincidence--How contrived!!!! I am about to puke!!
What a joke! The top two should not have received 1/10 of the votes they received.
Really, so Toby who led the nation in rushing and made Stanford a good team was worth only 1/10 of the votes. Toby will be a top ten draft pick and he will start in the NFL next year. Yea your right TexasXmas he sucks.

Ingram, congtats man.
Thank you Christopher:-)

:) Thanks guys.
Wait until the Lions draft him and then see if you want to congratulate him.
Ingram is one of the best and deserves the honor.
I'm an Oklahoma Sooner fan but must give credit where credit is due. He's a deserving player and to say otherwise is just plain bias.
Classy OU fan. Thank you.
Ndamukong Suh is going to tear the NFL apart.
Mark who? Who Ingram?

When was the last time a running back that averaged 120 yards per game win the Heisman?
Uh 2009. Come to grips with it. He had a career game on more than one occasion and Bama rode him to the title game. It'll be ok.
Wow this is a refreshing bunch on the forum today! I posted yesterday that Suh is the best college football player period. Gerhardt running standing straight up against SEC defenses would have taken
a heisman beating. He tore up the soft defenses he ran against.
