Kelly is a jerk to everyone around him, players and assistants. The prima donnas at Notre Dame might not take to that too well. You can get away with it when you are exceeding expectations, but it is impossible to exceed the unrealistic expectations at Note Dame. After decades of mediocrity, they just don't have the same advantages over their competitiors. If NBC ever stopped propping them up, they wold struggle even more.
Mike Kelly is better off staying at Cincinnati. He can recruit better athletes there. Notre Dame is not what it used to be. Coaches there soon find out that they can't get the quality "blue chip" athletes that Lou Holtz would recruit due to the high academic standards and entrance requirements at Notre Dame. Mike Kelly may lead Notre Dame to a couple of BSC appearances but no National Championships. Face it, Notre Dame alumni, tell your school to allow Mike Kelly or any coach to recruit the studs that Lou Holtz could and was allowed to recruit. Until then you will be mediocre at best. For now, schools like Florida, LSU, Alabama, USC, Texas and Oklahoma will win BCS championships as long as they do not have the high academic standards and entrance requirements that schools such as Stanford, Cal, UCLA, Duke, Northwestern, and Notre Dame have.
Are you guys serious? Brian Kelly (not Mike Kelly) has been successful everywhere he has been. 2 National Championships at Grand Valley State with an overall record of 118-35-2 (over 1/3 of their total wins as a program), a MAC championship in 3 seasons at Central Michigan, and 2 Big East Championships and 3 bowl games in 3 seasons at Cincinatti. Yeah, he sucks. In each situation, he has taken over struggling programs. Obviously you are listening to Robert Smith, Jesse Palmer, or some other ESPN moron that doesn't follow recruiting, yet thinks that they know enough to say that Notre Dame isn't able to recruit due to their high academic standards. Since 2001, Notre Dame has finished in the top 25 recruiting classes 6 out of 8 years with this year's class currently ranked 15th by scout.com. Oh, and correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Stanford, with their high academic standards, bend over USC, like Tiger Woods giving it to a cocktail waitress? Notre Dame can have success and win National Championships with smart players. They just need to develop their players on both sides of the ball. The problem with the last 3 coaches was that Davie was a defensive coach, Willingham was a moron, and Charlie was an offensive coach. Kelly has coached both. As a defensive coordinator, he lost a total of 3 games in 2 seasons (2 of which were in the playoffs). His defenses gave up more than 20 points only 4 times over those 2 seasons. Tenuta's defense only allowed less than 20 points 3 times this season (Nevada, BC, & Washington State).
One last thing for all the Urban Meyer lovers out there: Tebow's gone, Percy Harvin's gone (which is why you couldn't beat Bama this time), and I've seen John Brantley play (your back-up QB). I'm not saying you're going to absolutely suck, but the next few years may be a little rough, so be prepared.
ND better make some room, a lot of room for some additional National Championship Trophies. They get the athletes, just needed someone to coach em' up. Watchout Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, Alabama, LSU, USC, OSU and Penn State here comes Goliath!!!!
Kelly is a combination of Paterno, Urban Meyer, Tressel and Bill Parcells...a can't miss!
It's time to go out and throw as much money at Meyer as possible. Prime time for him to leave florida ! Kelly is not going to be able to recruit well at notre dame.
Forget Urban. He had his chance at grandeur. ND looks like groupies for God's sake. Move on. It's all good. There are better fish -- and one MAY have been caught.
The timing is right for Brian Kelly to come to the Irish. He'll be able to relate to these college level athletes much like Holtz was able to. I think that is much of the reason for his success.
Brian Kelly is a great fit at Notre Dame for the obvious reasons....he's Irish-Catholic, can recruit in the Midwest, and most of all, has proved he can win time and time again at up-and-coming programs.
The only concern I have is the defense...he is a very offenseive-minded coach (not too far off Weis) and that makes me a little nervous. Tenuta coming in was suppose to be this great plan to turn the defense around and it has been a catastrophe at best. The lineman get manuvered as the opposing O-line sees fit, the linebackers are missing tackles (even Te'o missed a few), and with exception to "Mr. Dependable" Kyle McCarthy, the secondary cant/wont cover the opposing team's receivers. There needs to be a drastic change on the defensive side to the ball and I'm curious to see how Kelly "tackles" that.
All in all, I think he will do very well. Maybe not BCS right out of the gates, but a potent offense with great talent (i.e. Rudolph, Floyd, Allen, and even John Goodman) and a C+ to B- defense with the majority of the cast returning (i.e. Te'o, B. Smith, H. Smith).
Side Note** Keep an eye on these players. I guarantee they will have a big impact next year: WR John Goodman, LB Zeke Motta
Kelly has proven that he can win with lesser quality. Even with Tate and Clausen gone, ND's athletes (Thanks to Weis), are far superior to Cinnci's. The difference now is that he knows how to get the most out of his players. He went undefeated with a rusty switchblade for talent - now watch what he can do when you hand him a machine gun.
My only concern is defense. Kelly - please get someone different then you had at Cinn. Look at the skilled positions on defense and let the kids do what they were recruited to do. The major problem for us defensively last year was that we recruited great coverage CB's but didn't let them cover.... (Blitzing nightmare scheme). We have the talent. They just need to be able to play to their strengths.
The haters need to give it a rest. kelly's a great coach and he'll have the full support of the actual alumni and fans. I'm sure that if the blogasphere existed in "63 they'd all be critical of ARA. Nuts to the cranks. The Irish will always be the Irish. Football is a game. It's going to to be a great ride. Welcome Coach Kelly!
This is obviously a man who knows how to coach college ranks and take a priviously unknown to greater heights.

Go Irish!!!
Pat M,
Who is Mike Kelly? Ha. You obviously don't know what your talking about....
There is NO coach that will ever meet their expectations fast enough! God might well fall short!
ND hasn't had a coach with a winning attitude since Holtz. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do with the program.
It's time to go out and throw as much money at Meyer as possible. Prime time for him to leave florida ! Kelly is not going to be able to recruit well at notre dame.
Don't forget to include TCU in that list.
ND + Urban Meyer= Winner: a simple math formula that must not be taught at Golden Dome U
Kelly is a winner and will turn this program around in 2 years and all the haters will be eating their hearts out, can't wait!!
Forget Urban. He had his chance at grandeur. ND looks like groupies for God's sake. Move on. It's all good. There are better fish -- and one MAY have been caught.
I'm sick of hearing all that crap from the ND haters out there. Kelly was National Coach of the year this year. How could ND get a better coach?
GO IRISH!
All of you ND Haters will soon be eating crow!!!
GO IRISH!
Kelly & ND better get rid if Ron Paulus on his staff if he wants to get a good start !
I am not sure about Kelly as new coach, wish him well. However I do think it CLASSLESS to not coach the Cincy BCS Bowl game. Gator fan.
