Wow. Pundits were so sure Florida-Alabama was the #1 vs. #2 showdown. So much for conjecture. Now same pundits are saying Texas should go to championship game despite poor performance in win tonight. Hmmm. See any flaws here?
No
Me neither.
None whatsoever.
It doesnt matter what anybody thinks Im a big Bama fan but I think the bcs sucks, in the NFL each team controls its own destiny as is the same for division 1AA but in the bcs system the bcs is controlled by politics and money and only a hand full of teams can control its own destiny
Bring on a div 1 football playoff system. The top 10 - 12 teams have a playoff to determine the champion!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????
Flaws..only Jill....sorry
Alabama V. Texas? Who wants to watch a NC game where you KNOW the outcome already?
Put a team against Alabama that has a heart, a fever for the game - like #3 TCU or even #4 Cincy.
The Alabama/Florida Game was exciting because eventhough the Gators were favored the Tide had not just a chance but the spirit to play and they showed up. Texas hasn't shown up for half the season- the last 2 aggies & huskers- being the most obvious. Texas is either over-rated or they have no spirit. College ball is exciting because anything can happen - unless one team is just done. Texas is done.
Let's have a National Championship College game - where anything can happen and a team with that something extra, the hunger for the game, can win.
How about top 16 teams? After the Thanksgiving rivalries it ends on Jan. 1 with one week off before the championship game. Same as now without a playoff. Wouldn't the bowls make more if they had more games per year rather than 1?
People who keep hollering for a "play off" system and compare college ball with the NFL don't seem to remember or care that the NFL is BIG money and that playing ball is the JOB of the players. The JOB of college football players is as students and they have classes to prepare for, attend and pass in addition to the all-consuming requirement to play football. "Fans" need to get a life and realize that the priority for student players is to prepare for their future; most of whom will not be in football. If the only thing you have to do is to rant about a play-off system, then maybe you should get a job and/or contribute big bucks to the school you support to endow scholarships for students.
TW,
Did you go to college?
I did and played college ball for a Div. 1 school and there are no classes between Thanksgiving and New Years. Ask any player, coach or student that is interested in college football and the majority will agree about a playoff system. While you are completely wrong about a football playoff system your argument about schooling does hold water when it comes to basketball. The NCAA playoff system is all during an active semester.
I sure hope you see this post because I would love to hear a response from you.
We all know it will be Bama-Texas. But you won't be able to convince me that these are the best 2 teams in the country. Besides which, this will be the least interesting BCS game. TCU, Boise State, Cincinnati, and Oregon are way more fun to watch.
Yeah but unfortunately they're all over-rated teams, none of which can deal with the kind of defense they'll run up against vs. anybody in the SEC or the Big 12. Nor do they have offensive teams that have faced the speed and size on defense that they'd face vs. Texas, 'Bama, Florida, LSU, etc., etc. We need a playoff system to eliminate pretenders like Cincinati and Boise ST early on.
Well put Mary...Cincy or Boise would get humiliated in the championship against Bama. Then again, so will Texas.
I'd almost like to see them put Boise St. in the championsip game so they could get crushed. It would quiet a lot of the noise about how / why they're overlooked each year.
Then why won't the sec or big twelve teams schedule games against Boisie State, as for strength SEC and Big 12 as a whole were not very strong this year.
Mary and btone, that is the same logic used to dismiss Utah last year. Everyone saying that they had never faced a defense like a SEC defense and would be embarrassed. If I recall correctly, Utah destroyed Alabama last year in the Sugar Bowl, something like 31-17. What is needed is a playoff system. The lower division employs one that works, why can't the FBS? Can you truly be the best team in all of the land if there are two other undefeated teams out there?
well i guess we will never know for certian who would humiliate who
thanks wolverine, saved me some typing
Please do not tune in to the BCS Championship Game. Watch your multiple teams in the lower bowls.
For the record, I'd like to see a playoff system, too. But I still think Boise and Cincy would get their clock cleaned against 'Bama.
That being said, I guess we'll never know.
Alabama is THE BEST in college football this year.Have you folks NOT paid attention?Bamas' defense is shutting DOWN McCoy,Pike, whoever. But these defenses can't handle Bamas' offense,to many BIG play makers.those are Facts.
P.S. and i nominate tebow for the criesman award.
Notice the verbs? "Would" humiliate; "Would" get their clocks cleaned , etc. etc. How about bring on the Playoff and let us actually see some actual humiliation and actual clean clocks? Wait, the major conferences all have partnership with bowl comittees, that's where your problems are! They are all in bed with each other!!! College football might be considered an Amatuer sport, but the politics behind the games are anything but amatuer. I bet it's dirtier than Washington politics.
LOL. Well, Faith, you made it useless to try to discuss anything with you with your statement that "...you won't convince me...". Obviously, when a person has a closed mind facts or rational reasoning mean nothing. Enjoy your perch on top of your mountain.
I vote for Bama vs. Texas, but let's be serious - who really knows who should play for the NC - without a playoff, we rely on 'perceived' conference strength - winning the Big 12 this year is like hooking a dead fish - whooo hoooo, but do you really want to mount that bad boy....Texas needed a few breaks to beat a team that had an incredibly pitiful offense - but is TCU or BSU any more deserving? My guess is that the SEC will win another NC - as it probably should be - best conference, best champion - but for the love of God - could we just cut to the playoff so we could know for sure....
If you watched TCU vs. BYU and TCU vs. Utah, then watched Texas vs. A&M and Texas vs. Nebraska, you would have no doubts who should be in the title game.
I agree with BJ. Texas/Alabama is the correct and best matchup.
The other teams had great seasons, but don't belong in the championship game, this year.
Come on Red River, and Mary Margaret, I am an avid Oklahoma Sooners fan. But can ya not remember a few years back when Boise beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.
Texas almost, and should have lost to a team that had NO offense.
I believe the best match up for this years title game would either be Bama - TCU, or Bama - Boise State
Tcu almost losing to air force by 3 points and playing new mexico state a team thats 1-11. Nebraska has the 3rd best defense in the country and ranked 22. BYU. Clemson and Utah the teams TCU played are no even ranked right now. Texas last game played Nebraska the north champion 9-3 TCU new mexico state 1-11.
Sean, you just fell for the tricks majors play upon us. Besides Big Ten and Big East, they all schedule a championship game. Of course that last conference championship game would be against a strong opponent and whoever emerge would have a better looking resume.
Ok, this is like talking about SOS. They use it in March Madness. I don't see anything wrong to give more weigh to recent games since it does reflect more of the current state of the team. But this should only be used in selecting a field to have a shot at the NC (hence a playoff).
Using it to pre-determine the best two teams to play in the BCS bowl does injustice to conferences such as the Mountain West (TCU), Big East (Cincy), Western Athletics (Boise State) because they couldn't have predicted the season end ranking to schedule these ranked opponent. I guess Cincy was somewhat fortunate in this regard to have played a 14th ranked Pitt, but they certainly didn't plan that.
oh my goodness, yes we will see Texas & Alabama in pasadena cailf.I cant wait!!
This is the reason why BCS will never work. This system does not work because BCS favors only few major conferences, and leaves out mid-major conferences. I am in favor for playoffs, to settle the true national champions!
BCS sucks! Plain and Simple!
GO BOISE STATE, even if I am not Broncos fan... they deserve a shot for Title, because they mean business.
Like everyone else, I see the title game as Alabama-Texas. However, I think Cincinnati could beat Texas. (no, I'm not a Bearcats cats, I'm not even from Ohio) Alabama-Texas is just plain boring, as would Florida-Texas have been. It's the same half dozen or so schools year in and year out playing for the national title. These smaller schools in smaller conferences will never get the opportunity because they are not bathed in voter's glory. Why do we let sportswriters, computers, and coach's ballots have the final say? Let them decide on the field! A playoff would not be hard to implement, they just want us to believe it would be. Damn the BCS and Bowl system!
Cincinnati offense could not hang with Texas defense period. Pittsburg put up 40 something points on them. Cincinnati is a one dimension team Texas is not.
An A&M team that lost to K-State and Colorado put up 39 points on the so called impenetrable Texas defense. The Texas defense is over rated. Texas hasn't played anyone this year. Their toughest non-conference opponent was University of Louisiana Monroe .The Big XII is incredibly weak this year. Tech is down, okie state is down, Oklahoma is down. Texas needed a last second miracle against a team that lost to Iowa State. The only consolation for TCU and Cincinnati is that the Longhorns will get flushed and we can all watch Colt and Mack pull a Tebow on the sidelines as the clock winds down.
How can true champion be crowned with so many undeafeated teams this year? A eight or twelve team playoff using the existing bowls would be so simple and a huge!!!! money maker for all involved. Get out of your box and get on with what the fans who pay your way want and deserve.
Should be Alabama and TCU...But the fun game to watch will be Oregon vs Ohio State....
Just my personal opinion, but I really don't think Ohio St stands a chance. What's the difference between Ohio St and Cheerios? Cheerios belongs in a bowl.
Clearly, you haven't seen Ohio State play this year. Their defense is perhaps the top defense in the country and Oregon's running game will face a challenge that they haven't faced all year. I am expecting this to be quite an entertaining game. Did you watch Oregon-Boise State? Oregon can score with the best of them, but they have the potential to fold under a stout d.
Hell, if Boise St. can beat Oregon, Ohio State might shut them out.
Ohio State barely beat iowa who was playing with a qb starting his first game ever. The Choke eyes will do their usual bowl game el foldo.
I agree with BJ, above. I'm no Mountain West fan, but TCU crushed everybody they played, including some good teams. I know, it just doesn't seem like TCU can be that good. But they look like the best team around to me. They would kill Texas. No question. Give me a playoff.
I think TCU, or Cincy for that matter, would beat Texas, but regardless of the fact that we are in dire need of a playoff system, I think Alabama really is the best all around team of the entire season.
The good things for the mid-level schools, is the AP votes it's own National Champion. IF TCU, Boise St, etc are truly the best team out there, and would probably 'crush' whoever they played, then you will have your National Championship. Let the bowl games play out.
Just remember to ZIP IT...once the tallies are in.
They didn't crush Air Force in which they won by 3 points and crushing New Mexico state a 1-11 team is not good. TCU strength of schedule is 56 Texas is 32. TCU should be crushing people with a schedule like that.
but for everyone that thinks a playoff system will work...take for example - NFL playoffs: Even if your team plays like crap and wins by one in a low scoring game and barely scoots by...(i.e - Texas)...they still will move on to the next round. So um...stop complaining.
EXACTLY. Finally a voice of reason. I'm sick and tired of dallas cowboy fans discussing 'who they can lose to' yet still make the playoffs. Pathetic.
That's not a voice of reason, that's plain rediculous. The difference in the playoff and BCS is that the playoff would offer the whole field A SHOT at the NC, whereas, the BCS predetermined the two "best" teams.
Sure, we all remember how Eli Manning slipped out of the sack, scored a TD and beat the 16-0 Pats! But this element of surprise is what makes football fun. One thing you didn't hear is Pats fans complained they were snuffed the Superbowl Championship because they weren't handpicked by a bunch of coaches to play in the Superbowl. THAT'S the beauty of the playoff. Get rid of the BCS already!
If its a Bama-Texas Title game Im simply just not going to watch it. Like someone else said Im sick of the same few teams playing in the title game every single year. Its getting boring. Give teams like TCU and Boise St a chance because i bet they would kill texas. Screw the BCS!
Nice
bama will have a feast on that steer
After seeing an unimpressive Texas last night, the championship game does not look that interesting. It looks like an Alabama blow out. I don't think Texas could score enough points against a BSU or TCU to win. Sad we have to put up with this BCS system every year.
What we saw last night was the National Championship Game. All games beyond this point will be played to decide how all other teams line up behind Alabama. At this point I think Texas should have play Florida for the number two spot. Any argument to this is a plea for a playoff system.
I agree. The Nebraska / Texas game was the true National Championship. Great point, Dawg.
RR - Nebraska's offense is soooooo bad, they needed the defense to score against that 'power house' in Colorado.
Their D was good, but they're nowhere near a national championship team.
Florida/Alabama was the Nat Champ game.
Then, if Bama makes the NC game, it should win that game too.
Just don't make whiney excuses like all SEC fans did after Alabama was whipped by a mid-major in the Sugar Bowl.
You guys are already building up your 'excuses' for a possible poor showing in Pasadena. Classic.
We need a playoff system. Bama is clearly the best team in the country. Texas' win was huge, however, there are other teams with a legitmate case to be in the BCS championship. College football is fantastic.
War Eagle and congrats to my arch rivals....Roll Tide
The Horns were exposed by my Huskers. They were a 2 touchdown favorite and yet had to go for a last minute field goal. I think TCU may be a better challange for Bama.
TCU has just as much right as Cincy, Texas, Boise St, Alabama... to play in the NC game. Let's see how the voters, computers place them. Then we can all accept the results and enjoy the bowl season.
Stupid answer that means you think your team is a joke and Nebraska exposed them when you should be saying 2 good big 12 defenses going at it, Alabama was exposed by Tennessee barely winning 12 to 10 and Auburn barely lost in the final minutes as well TCU got exposed barely beatting air force by 3 points.
Well said.....
College football without a playoffs is meaningless.
TCU has been the best team all year.
F the BcS!
Yes you are. If TCU is the best team, why are you complaining? The Bowl announcements come this evening on ESPN. TCU should be playing in Pasadena, if they are the top team. Quit your complaining and enjoy the moment. Your post makes you sound like you really don't think TCU is the best team.
Get behind your team. Quit making excuses.
TCU strength of schedule is horrible compared to Texas and Alabama. If Alabama and Texas were in TCU conference dominating then the first thing you would say Texas and Alabama need to start playing somebody.
I hate to break it to you Sean, but the Big 12 sucked this year. Texas beat 2 friggin teams in the current top 25 and they think they're world beaters. Guess what? So did TCU. Maybe Texas should beef up their non-conf. schedule a little more to compensate for the Big 12 blowing so bad this year.
Sounds like Nebraska-Alabama would have been a more exciting card.
Actually, Nebraska / Florida.
No way Nebraska... sorry to troll you dude.
The BCS is not about who is the best in college football but who they want to see. $$ is the factor, this is whay we should go back to the original bowl system, we could have a couple of teams claim the title this year again. There are simply to may good teams this year to claim just one.
TCU is the real loser here.
Texas has played three ranked apponents (1 more than TCU) but also played UTEP, Louisianna Monroe, UCF, Baylor, and Kansas. Strength of schedule counts I guess...
And now those same pundits are so sure that TCU, BSU and Cinn couldn't play with the big boys. Utah humiliated Alabama last year and you just watch what Boise St does to Florida this year.
Utah played Alabama "last year". Catch up.
Exactly right, Red River.
