Speak now, Tiger, or forever hold your peace

When Tiger Woods got in the car just before 2:25 a.m. Friday, he didn't just crash into a fire hydrant. He had a head-on collision with another object: the invisible bowels of the bad-publicity machine, which in more than a 13 years of professional golf, he'd been able to avoid.

Only one reason to avoid the police. He's hiding something. Maybe the whiney crybaby isn't as squeaky clean as people think.

"Golfer must speak publicly about the crash"??? According to whom,MSNBC? He doesn't owe anybody an explanation, least of all our sleezy media. This is between him and his wife. Some people just can't wait to trash him, so leave him alone for cryin' out loud.

you're right cpw777, he doesn't owe the public an explanation. However you have to think of his endorsements. Endorsements for the most part are based on image. You can be the biggest jerk in the world behind closed doors but if you can portray yourself in a positive light in public the big bucks endorsements come in. Simple as that.

That's why I think image, for the most part, is a crock of s**t. Tiger's squeaky clean image brings big bucks to him. He's not talking now because he and his wife have to put some spin on this so they both come out looking good. The public will never know what really happened, they'll hear what Tiger wants them to hear.

Not only that, Tiger is probably pretty embarrassed right about now. This isn't something that's going to go away in a couple of weeks, not if the sharks known as the media have anything to say about it. This is what TMZ lives for!! And if Tiger was found to be cheating on his wife then this is good for her if things go downhill and the word divorce pops up in the near future. There's a reason why 7 out of 10 marriages fail.

Nothing, not even the kind of money Tiger has, can guarantee a happy and long marriage. Nothing!

He cheated on his Nordic wife

You have proof of that?

-------------------------------------------

As for everyone griping about squeaky clean, wow so everyone has to be dirty, corrupt, scandal ridden, everyone has to be wrong, evil, mean, cruel, horrible to be a part of this society?

I guess good people just don't exist anymore.

Whatever happened between Woods is between Woods and his wife. Anyone speaking of an affair, well you know what the woman on the other end of the affair is denying left right and center of any involvement with Woods period. So I guess everyone will then jump all over her and say she is a liar looking for publicity.

Frankly the supposed other women in these crappy type stories, are usually the ones NOT denying an affair, SHE IS, emphatically.

I think I will believe Rachel Uchitel. And I won't look down upon Tiger Woods, until we have the truth, if we ever get the truth.

This is typical: our nation is headed toward moral and financial suicide, we are being sold out to the Chinese, the so called leaders in Wahsington are stealing our money and any hopes of a secure future and this author and 95% of you think this story is important. We should not care what Tiger and his wife do. It is up to them and their family.

How about this - why don't all of you get a life and mind your own business? Michale Jackson is dead, leave his family alone. Tiger has a life, leave him alone. Get on with making your own lives better. Gotta go, it's time to practice what I preach.

I am sick to death of this kind of post. Everyone knows that times are tough out there economically. So because there are economic worries, we should only read or comment on articles that deal with the economy. What a crock. Of course, there are bigger fish to fry than this. But this is escapism. It's a bizarre story about one of the world's most recognizable figures. Some may find it interesting. Some may find it funny. Why did you read it?

Tomorrow, though we are fighting two wars, I will watch ESPN. Though I know we are at 10% unemployment, I will still relax and enjoy some football games. Don't chastize about how there are more important things in the world.

Law enforcement folks are paid for with tax dollars and their conduct must be recorded in a police report that should be available to the public. 1st: The standard people who like to see celebrities fail or least knock down a some notches. These people love hearing celebrity with drink problems, bad parents, punching the newsmen, sex scandal, etc.

2nd: These are the worst kind. The racist! The narrow-minded. These people can't stand seeing successful minorities. They want to see minorities in their place. Tiger Wood during his rise to fame, has force change to people who do not want change. You find country clubs with limited or no minorities access force to open their doors. Tiger Woods Effect. Tiger Woods of high fame, married a White Women. The are some people who hated seeing Tiger success. They wants the worst for him right now! You know who these people are? If the cuts on Tigers face are not consistent with a crash. The police and the prosecutor have the right to do an investigation and charge someone with battery and assault. You cant hide marital abuse from the police.

That is almost correct. However, Isle Worth is a private gated community so the road, the fire hydrant, everything associated with this collision is private property. The only reason the police even bothered to show up in the first place is the "injured person" aspect which requires an investigation by the police under the law. Had Tiger not gone to the hospital, the FHP would have told whom ever that it is between Tiger and the Isle Worth Home Owner's Association and would not have even responded to the matter.

It is questionable if FHP can even write a traffic ticket in this case given the circumstances. There are no witnesses to the collision nor are there any drug or alcohol test results. Basically, this is the end of the matter as far as the FHP is concerned.

To be truthful, had it been anyone other than Tiger, i would bet the FHP officer would have left the report and the exchange of information form next to his bed at the hospital and been done with it then.

If this was the average person who couldn't afford a high paid attorney, they would be questioned and made to give a statement and/or sobriety test.

Tiger didn't wreck on private property, and is therefore subject to the same treatment as the rest of us.

I think it's posssible he got chased down by somebody(his wife?) which caused him to crash. Maybe he's been waiting until some substance(alcohol?) is out of his system.

I'm sure we'd all like to be able to/afford to hide similar "accidents" or incidents. Unfortunately, most of us regular folk, don't have that luxury(unless we have personal connections inside law enforcement agencies).

So what ? He does not have to explain anything to anybody except what the law requires. If they feel he did something illegal they can get a warrant. Too bad if the press feels hurt because he is ignoring them. Good for him ! If the people paying him for endorsements or appearance money want to stop paying, that is their right, but he is under no obligation to "explain" anything to anybody. The press would not accept any explaination anyway, they would continue to ask innane questions for years with the hope of getting their name on a byline.

As long as Woods is willing to accept any possible financial repercussions from his refusal to talk and has not been charged with any legal violations, it is no ones business but his and his family's.

I've never heard of a police officer, when investigating an accident, asking where the person was going. How is that important to the accident itself? If you hit another car, does it matter if you were on your way to the dentist, to the mall, or to your lover's house?? So far in this country we have the freedom to move about. Let's not jeopardize that by forcing people to tell us where they were going, as though they don't have the right to travel. This isn't the U.S.S.R....yet.

A gated community, with private law enforcment is by definition private property. The only exception to that would be if, they like many malls and shopping centers do - were to specifically sign an agreement allowing police free access to the property.

yes, in an emergency or in responding to a call, public police officers are allowed in, but that is not a given.

Any number of private electronics firms also have similar restrictions on just any ole police officer rambling in any time he wants to take a donut break.

As often quoted, disparagingly in this forum - rich folks can afford to live differently. They tend to value their privacy.

Rick Reilly wrote the same piece, different angle today, claiming:

He's an educator. He started and runs the Tiger Woods Learning Center in Orange County, Calif., a place where kids go to learn about golf, the world, and personal responsibility, like how to be honest.

Until Woods answers some questions, he is only teaching his students that the best thing to do in a crisis is to run and hide.

Yeah, it's not a PR win, but I don't think it'll be damaging his educator cred as is. I also doubt Woods gives an eff about that.

What are you talking about? Isleworth is very much Private Property. Hence the giant brass sign on the front gate "Private Property," and the fact that the 20 or so TV satellite trucks parked on the side of the road outside the nieghborhood and the armed guards at the front gate would be a clue that it is Private Property. In Florida, the police do not investigate traffic accidents on Private Porperty unless someone is injured. Nor do they enforce the speed limits, stop signs, parking violations. In some cases, the Home Owner's Association will hire off duty police to patrol the community, but in most cases the home owner's association uses private security, as is the case with Isleworth.

Most readers have been thinking everything mentioned in this article.

Tiger and/or his handlers better get out there quick with a believable story - time is passing and he isn't looking good. Much too mysterious. They would have been wiser to address it a lot sooner than the next day and according to the news reports tonight, they have refused to see the police. Not a good move.

Anything coming out now will be suspect and the media will be all over him. They will be hardpressed to come up with a believable scenario now. Unfortunate.

Is it possible that the Mrs. was angry at him (they must have had a fight) resulting in Tiger bolting out, getting into his SUV, driving away and the Mrs. chasing him with a, guess what, golf club? She must have smashed the rear widshield since the SUV must have been speeding away. Tiger probably was distracted, crashed into immovable objects at fairly low speed explains why the air bags didn't deploy. This assumes that the stories are correct about the rear windshield being smashed.

Now the story gets more interesting. This becomes a multiple choice at this time as follows:

                              a) She drags Tiger out of the vehicle, beats the #%&* out of him, knocks him unconscious then call 911.

                              b) She really called 911 as the news suggests before dragging him out. Perhaps he was already hurt by then. There is no account in the news about her breaking the driver's side window. Some luxury SUVs have automatic locking system once the vehicle starts moving. I can imagine that she must have panicked and her actions may not make sense. He was probably unconscious before being dragged out.

                              c) She beat the @#*&% out of him after she dragged him out if he weren't already hurt/unconscious.

The pressure on the family with two little children must be tremendous. Domestic quarrels happen all the time and Tiger is not immune. Holidays bring the family issues up - just the way it is!

So folks, please give him a break! Pure conjecture on my part anyway.

Tiger must come out "clean" in this situation. Ordinarily he could claim privacy but the more he attempts to "hide" the worse it'll get. Mr. Bill Clinton comes to mind.

Smart man as it is clearly the mission to bring him down. Few know it's Tiger's image many are looking to destroy. I hope you didn't think Obama was the only one being attacked. Many couples have a disagreement but few are asked why were you going out at 2 am. Yes Tiger has two babies who just might need something but it's the scandals Americans love and bringing down Tiger Woods would leave a great white hope available. Look Oprah saw she was now being attacked and moved to Cable. The Movie Do the Right Thing explained it clearly. While Magic is entertaining and rich he's great but take away that and he's nothing but another black man. Any one remember Michael Jordan in college? He was driving and his car broke down as he went to a door to ask for help. The lady quickly called the police as she was afraid this black man was at her door. Fear of the young black man was all she could think of as her and her husband waited for the cops. Well years later the couple went to a Basketball game with their son and noticed the name of the Super Star was Micheal Jordan of the Bulls. The couple quickly saw the Media and announced that was the young man who stopped for help at their home. Good news Michael remembered it but showed manners as he spoke. Yes folks there was a police report to prove the facts. Now the lady and her husband said they would glad if Michael would stop over as they were fans. So life isn't so hard to understand after all. Tiger and his wife are targets and many will do their best to destroy his career and image

I just read that the Mrs. now tells a different story. Hmmmmm.

Apparently, there is a fourth option in my multiple choice previously stated. So here it goes:

                                    d) She chases him with a golf club, manages to smash both rear windows (she must be quite fast) causing Tiger to be really startled. Well, after the crash, she probably dragged him out, beat the #@&* out of him - enough to knock him unconscious, came to her senses, then called 911. The rest is history.

I can imagine why Tiger is mum about the whole affair. I'd be embarrassed too, and I'm not Tiger. So folks, the guy deserves a break.

Who cares why he had the accident? It certainly will not affect my life in any way, will not help to improve the economy or get people jobs. The guy had a car crash and is under no obligation to tell the public anything, or grant any interviews with our so called "free press" who need to get a life.

Hear, hear. It's also high time Americans stopped buying products based on the "image" of the one endorsing them. How stupid is that? Buy a product based on the merits of the product itself, not who is telling you to buy it. Maybe then sports figures and entertainers can live their lives in peace; don't they make enough money from their day job?

It's painfully obvious. They had a blow out at two in the morning and she chased him right out into the street with a sand wedge! Then she "rescued" him with it, with malice! He couldn't see, in his haste to escape her wrath, where he was going with glass flying into his eyes from her hooks and slices into the side window glass! Poor guy. It's probably a good thing he's a golfer and not a champion clay pigeon shooter!

He's not obliged to speak to authorities or anyone for that matter for a traffic incident. All that is required is what all of us have to prove--License, Registration, Insurance.

The only reason this is making news it's because it's Tiger and we the American people are insatiably drawn and obsessed with the Fall from Grace of anyone that too squeaky clean image. We need them to be thrown into the stew we all live in so we can somehow feel closer to him or knock them down a peg because although we talk the talk when it comes to making good in this country at the root is a raging jealousy of anyone who actually follows through and we are left yet again whine, diminish, put down and find fault with those who succeed ahead of us....WHY THEM NOT US.....

It's the sad, sickening, paradox of being an American.

I'm sure his father looks down with pride on this young man. You on the other hand are just a sad, jealous, hateful human being....you are pathetic.

Courtney Hazlett is a hack. Period. If she's going to write a first person account -- my path crossed with Tiger's -- she needs to tell readers how, when and where. Moreover, to write an opinion column based on zero facts -- at least nothing more than any reasonable person might deduce -- is shameful.

As Courtney regularly displays in her Scoop Column on MSNBC, she has no sources and is therefore content to use those of other journos who actually do their jobs.

As my old prof used to say "If you cannot advance a story don't write anything!"

This "column" is crap. MSNBC should know it. MSNBC should have never put it up. Failing that, it should be yanked. Courtney, who graduated from Columbia's J School -- one of the best -- needs to go back to school.

ScoopReader - you've come through again - accurately describing Hazlett as a waste of time. I am so sick of her nonsense you cannot believe it. She has never delivered a scoop - just poop. She does not have any contacts or sources and reveals that all the time. I am not a Tiger fan but take a look at the witch he is supposedly doinking. She looks like a slut, acts like a slut and probably is a slut. Even the best relationships can be challenged by an evil witch like this - no, no I am not describing Hazlett. Tiger should come clean - I agree, but I realize just like Hazlett my opinion means nothing. I do guarantee you one thing - if he is sleeping with this slut, his undoing is coming quickly. His sponsors will dump him quicker than you can believe if he turns out to be a philanderer. I would not touch that slut with a ten foot pole - mine or yours. Additionally I believe his wife should have used a wedge instead of a seven iron - seems to me you want to take a nice divot if you are trying to make a point like the one she is suspected of having made. On the other hand - and this is part of Hazlett's problem too - consider the fact that we don't know if any of this is true. Would not suprise me if the slut was lying and Tiger is a good husband. And I'll make another bet - this would never have happened if his dad was still alive.

It sounds to me as if his jealous wife battered Tiger and we have a double standard of justice when it comes to domestic violence. If this had happened to Mrs. Woods, the cops would be all over him and I'll bet he would have been arrested, smeared and in jail by now.

His reaction to this public intrusion is typical Tiger. Over the years he has developed a thick skin to counter grievous insults, accusations and unprovoked rumor.

Tiger does not get frasseled, his response to stress is measured and appropriate. He has a knack for playing the long game, not the "flash and react" you would expect.

As a fledgling journalist at Golf World magazine in the early 2000s, I can attest to similar stories of the youngest golfer to achieve a career grand slam behaving in a way that might have looked bad on paper.

I still recall, with an unconscious shiver of revulsion, the "dinner menu preference" uttered by a much older and supposedly wiser competitor at Augusta, in his early career. It took someone with loftier sights to ignore that provocation, even from a Senior PGA golfer. There have been many nattering nabob's nipping at his heels over the years. Tiger has risen above and exceeded.

Tigers contribution to golf has brought the game many followers and outstanding competitors from all over the world. The game is better for it.

                                                              Gunny,

Being in Australia for a week, is not the same as being on overseas deployment for a year, 13 or 18 months. Besides, a 4-star hotel room ain't the same as 40 man shower. When you miss having "mama" around, you can stay in the shower for as long as you need.

From the news - seems he has only been married for 5 years or so? He still has 2 more to go before that spouse dreaded "seven year itch" kicks in.

Military wives have a different mind set than civilians. If she was that worried, I'm pretty sure Tiger could afford a few more 1st class tickets to his place of employment.

Its hard to realize how much Tiger has accomplished in such a short time. the man is a Billionaire! Was it only 13 or 14 years ago that he turned Pro? Now that's what I would call - parlaying an inside straight to win the Jackpot, the game and the Tournament.

No wonder so many haters are "Fired Up - ready to go". Nothing breeds contempt like spectacular success.

The odds of having a good, long and stable marriage go up when raised in one. I'm sure he misses his parents. A man losses a fountain of knowledge once his Dad passes a way... way worse when you really like your parents.
