Pompei: Having the Lions play on Thanksgiving is as much a part of the holiday as a good afternoon snooze. And they sometimes go together. But that doesn't mean the Lions will be knocked off their Thanksgiving perch anytime soon. The league - or most of it - appears to value the tradition that goes along with having the Lions and Cowboys play on Thanksgiving.
Settle in - Lions here to stay on Thanksgiving

Dan - I agree. Besides, everyone expects a little turkey on Thanksgiving, even if the turkey is my Lions for now.
Dallas is good for laying a few hard boiled eggs on Thanksgiving too.
The least the Lions could do is showcase their future instead their two youngest stars won't even be playing. The game will be entirely unwatchable, but I'll still watch just to torture myself. I'd really like to see Stafford play though.
I live in Michigan, so I do follow the Lions (now that Millen is gone), but grew up in another city with an NFL team. Having the Lions play on Thanksgiving is traditional. Sure, they stink now, but so what? Watching the Lions play just means there is more opportunity to talk, be loud, and go to the kitchen whenever one wants, not worry about missing the big play. (It also means we don't have to watch them on Sunday!)
So much for my theory that the NFL always had the Lions playing on Thanksgiving because the Women in the Commissioner's life didn't want Men all across the Country sitting around the TV watching Football instead of interacting with their families.
"Just because the Lions have been in a little dry spell does not mean they will stay there."
Seriously? 50 years is a dry spell? The Lions are simply painfully unwatchable, and somebody ought to see if there's something in the Geneva Convention that should prohibit inflicting this kind of torture on the innocent viewing public. The NFL should conduct a poll on whether to have the Lions and the Cowboys always polluting the airwaves--do they know most people can't stand the Cowboys either?
Hey when was the last time the Lions got a Monday nite game or Sunday nite game, which no doubt is because we suck, I got no problem with that, we have'nt earned the right to play those games. Detroit started the tradition of playin' on Thanksgiving. And should be allowed to keep it. I personally don't root for Dallas or any other team, but on Turkey Day, I'll watch them or any other teams they put on T.V. as will most other football fans. All these people that bitch about havin' to watch the Lions play once a year, cry me a river, I've gotta watch 16 of their games, and most of em' are painful.
It's not right to do the Lions every year. It's nonsense. Spread it around!
The Lions are a tradition on Thanksgiving and that should never change. I'm sure that there are others like me. My love of football was fueled by watching the Lions on my grandfathers round screen Zenith T.V. - so for me and I am sure others it is part of the overall feeling and tradition of the holiday - it brings back warm memories of my grandfather telling stories and explaining the game to me. I'm not against change - but there ought to be a few anchors in the world out there - some things that are seen as simple truths, simple things that can be counted on - and I don't care if the Lions are 0-48 the only time I have ever rooted against them on Thanksgiving is when they were playing my team - this is this team's day to shine in the sun regardless of how well they are performing.
I can't stand either one of these teams. I don't get why they can't change the teams, or better yet, just have 4 random teams every year.
Your team may not be going to the playoffs, but you should be giving thanks that you are not a Lion's fan. So, the Lions are perfect for Thanksgiving. Let them play !
Lions are a tradition alll right.... a tradition of horrible teams and horrible games..
and poor Stafford's carear was over they day the Lions picked him...
My Lions lost, which is not a surprise, but they started the tradition of playing on Thanksgiving first and for years before any other team. They should get to keep the tradition. Besides this kid Stafford has a great future ahead of him and if the Lions get a good defensive player or two in the draft or buy a running back from someone else, they can really turn it around. Stafford is just the kind of QB you can build a team around. Now if they'll only do it.
and pigs fly.....
Meh, people used to takes shots at my Red Wings many years ago, but once they got Stevie Y, they were able to build one of the greatest hockey teams in NHL history around him and his leadership.
