The story on Rich Rod is supported by the other stories appearing on this website: The "big rivalry" and "hatred for the opponent" is mostly the people living in Columbus and their hatred for Michigan, not Michigan fans hatred for Ohio State. I lived in Michigan for 22 years, and have lived here in Columbus OH for 19 years. The stories on MSNBC hold true...the only hatred between the two sides are the Ohio State "Wal-Mart" fans (i.e - bleed red and grey, yet have zero affilitation with the university) and their disdain for Michigan. See the recent CNNSI article: Ohio State fans are voted the #2 most obnoxious fans in the country!
Some truth to that, but this Michigan boy would LOVE to see the true smash mouth rivalry back and alive, just like the old days. It was awesome when this game meant MORE than just a rivalry. All the marbles need to be on the table.
OK - I'm calling a Michigan win to get this thing heated up, by let's say... 11. Walmart, now it's your turn.
Sad but true... the issue has been a very weak and football beggarly Michigan A.D. Those cut like Bo and Woody are hard to find. Tressel is a moderately fair representation of that rivalry, at least he gets that part. But, he falls woefully short of greatness on the National scene. What made Bo and Woody great was BOTH, beating the other AND winning Championships.
Michigan needs to dump RR and his fancy schemes and get back to basic power football, then build from there.
As John Madden used to say... 'If your pile consistently ends up on your opponents side of the line of scrimmage, BOOM...you typically win the ball game.' It's still true today. BOOM, there it is.
Oh yes, Tressel can really coach! He plays teams like the Ohio School for the Blind before he starts on the really tough Big 10 (the name in itself is a joke) schedule. This year some of his quality wins (Toledo 4-6, New Mexico State 3-7, Illinois 3-7, Indiana, 4-7, Purdue 4-7, Minnesota 6-5 and of course that powerhouse Michigan 5-6) a wonderful total record of 29 wins and 45 loses. He will usually end up with a 10-2, 9-3 record and then gets blown out in a Bowl game. Yes he really can coach!
Based on your narrow-minded logic, I would be able to argue that since #1 Florida is playing FIU (3-7) today that Florida sucks and Urban Meyer (who like Tressel has won a National Championship) sucks, too... Look at the whole picture. Ohio State also has quality wins over Iowa and Penn State. And they played USC and Texas in the past 4 years. That's not exactly backing down from competition.
The article was that Tressel wins, I don't remember Ohio State beating USC or Texas in the last four years. there isn't much "narrow-minded logic" to that fact. Also Flordia hasn't established it's record over the last few years in playing a full schedule of teams like FIU. Look at Ohio States schedule and the records of those teams over the last few years. Each year they play a majority of schools with losing records and when they play against a quality team (USC or Texa they lose most of the time)
