Retired NBA star Jayson Williams has cut a plea deal that would send him to prison for up to three years for accidentally shooting a driver at his New Jersey estate in 2002, a person with knowledge of the case told The Associated Press on Thursday.
Jayson Williams to take plea deal, go to prison

He deserves more time than 3 years. He's lucky he could pay for a good defense attorney. He's been free since 2002 on bail, while waiting a retrial.
I wonder how the family of the victim feels about this? I would be livid.
If he only does 3 years a grave injustice has been done. While recklessly brandishing a deadly weapon he killed an innocent man. Then he attempted to besmirch the memory of his victim by arranging the gun to appear as if the victim was responsible for his own death. Ten to twenty years should be the range of punishment.
Three years is a slap in the face. How about 203 years of hard time? Keep giving people like this 3years and people will keep killing. Something is seriously wrong with the system.
What ever happened to "love thy neighbor"? Oh, thats right until you get caught
Its about time this thug goes to prison. He was always a thug but he always covered that fact up when he was in front of the cameras. Dont drop the soap J Will.....I know plenty of guys that would love a shot at you..haha
I forgot all about this case until now..Don't remember him being a thug, but he needs to be locked up, especially because he tried to cover up the fact that he shot this man. I do remember them catching the detective making a racial slur, I think it was on tape or something, I can't recall all the details. But it was a mess!
Our Justice system at work....7 years later he is convicted.....Waste of money....Should have happened in 2002.
With all these athletes taking plea deals and going to prison, these should the tragic athlete's prison.
Don't you know? It was a black man killing a white man. Not really that much of a crime. This piece of crap Williams and his lawyer even tried to pull an appeal by saying the jury was racist. Hope this scwartze gets his. But he'll probably be a hero in the joint. My hope is he gets shaken down which will be the most likely case.
Jen....you dont know much about Williams then.
If this was just an accident, then anyone who owns a firearm of any kind has enough brains I would think to make sure it's not loaded!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Any service veteran or one of the many great white hunters of this nation, know enough to check the weapon first before anything is done. Check the f--king weapon to make sure it's empty PERIOD!!!!
Now on the other hand if your into anything illegal or there's some heavy issue's in your life then I guess your weapon would be loaded, expecting that maybe something might happen.
A life is lost gone, family friends never to see this man again. What a f--king shame. I say change the laws even if it's accidental, mandatory 15 years in prison no parole. But see the punks that have guns think their so cool!!!
He shot an innocent man point blank and killed him. Then he made up stories of innocence. Please leave the racial issues out of this, eventhough he tried to get out of it by claiming racial discremination.. expensive lawyers..
He should be jailed at least for 10 years to make him pay for the crime he did.No parole.Upon his release after 10 years another 5 years of community service under supervision with no drugs or weapons. Maybe,he will learn the lessen and repent for the murder..No mercy for anyone who took another innocent human beings' life.
for ta le be a
The gun should not have been pointed in the direction of another person to begin with. It should not have been loaded in such a situation. He should have admitted the accident and not tried to cover it up.
He's the epitome of an irresponsible gun owner.
If that were me or someone in my family, we would be going to prison for a lot longer than 3 years. This man is a murderer and she be sentenced to life in prison. If he were not a sports star the plea would be a lot different. No justice for the victim or his family, once again.
