South African runner Caster Semenya will keep her 800-meter gold medal from the world championships, and the results of her gender tests will be kept confidential, the South African sports ministry said Thursday.
Semenya will keep gold amid gender dispute

I do respect Caster right to privacy but the ruling leaves a gap. What will happen in future races, can Caster participate in women's competition?
Just look at the body and you see it is a man.
I feel a lot of sympathy for Semenya. From what I've heard she has probably faced some tough times.
However, men's and women's sports that are seperated, are done so to give women a fair chance of winning. Men get a boost of testosterone, which gives them greater strength and size. That natural "steroid" makes men competing with women unfair. If Semenya is found to have testes (like some rumors have reported), then she is getting the same benefit of performance enhancing testosterone than men are. Hence, she should compete with men.
If she is allowed to compete with women, then whats to stop any women from getting the same benefit. I could she women getting testes transplanted, in order to get the benefits, yet still compete with women? Seems crazy, but I've heard of all sorts of weird stuff, and with a huge benefit, I'm sure someone will do it. It's sort of doping al-naturale.
We're all one race - the human race. Let's eliminate sex discrimination in athletics by allowing everyone to compete against everyone.
I am not sure it is fair to the other participants to allow someone with an abnormal genetic advantage to compete. Especially when you are talking about something so basic as he/she physiology traits.
The results of the gender test are being kept "confidential" because Semenya is a man!
Look at the placement of HIS navel....he is a male, not a female, and should not be allowed to compete as a female. He does not deserve the gold medal for competing against women and his lying ass should return the money.
You cannot "impersonate" another person or "pretend" to be something you are not. This whole situation from beginning to end nothing but a big fat lie!
Not the girl's fault, but if I were a female competing against her/him, I would step out of races that she/he ran in.
Ian above would have all compete together. Utter nonsense. Human physiology negates that idea. Males excel in areas that females cannot because of strength differences, and visa versa.
I always appear to have a different vision than all others, I hope it is because I can see the forest for the trees and I am always right. I have not read any of the other comments, but I would guess that this point of mine has not been mentioned. They have agreed to give her the trophy and money, so that point is mute. Testosterone is the only thing that improves performance, it is only produced by tesicles, hers are buried, but could be easily removed, so then she would not have them, would definetly be a girl and could continue racing as a girl. I personally doubt if that would alter her performance, but it would surely stop the controversary.
Is there any reason behind her/he being named "Semen-ya"?
PC hits the games...
There are a few others, tennis players, to be exact that make one wonder if their sexual inclinations may be an indicator of a certain "maleness" and thus an unfair advantage when they compete against...total women.....
"Is there any reason behind her/he being named "Semen-ya"?"
I don't know "fer sure and fer certain", but I'd be willing to bet that it's the family name, the person's full name being Mokgadi Caster Semenya.
This is the first I've heard of belly button placement being an gender indicator!
However, if she's all girl, she won. Let her enjoy her victories.
If he's all boy, what has he got to be proud of? Will his children one day boast "My Daddy can run like a GIRL"?
If (s)he is a hermaphrodite (as has been suggested), then the person has enough problems without being forceably 'outed' before the whole planet. Years after Semenya is dead and gone, people will still use it to cheapen the victories.
essayons,
I'm cool with your reasoning. But what about the fairness to the other athletes would were beaten? If Semenya has testes (as I've heard, and that's a big if), should she be considered as a female athlete. In my earlier post I stated how the testosterone is basically a natural steriod for men (and lessor for women). Did she get the key benefit that seperates mens and womens sports, yet compete with those who didn't?
This is one of those tough decisions. Painful for Semenya, yes, but also painful for the other athletes who may have been unfairly beaten.
In part Semenya brought this public controversy on herself for not clearing this with the race official before the race. Instead she raced as if nothing was amiss, and was hoping to keep the gender issue quiet. She didn't ask for this growth abnormality, but how she deals with it (ethically, honestly) will define her more, in my mind, than her track times.
In the end though, it's the decision of the sanctioning bodies. I hope they choose wisely.
This whole affair has been handled so terribly. The young lady won fair and square. Her sexuality should not have been discussed in public like it has been. It's really amazing how crass some people can be.
Good for him!He should be able to keep the medal that he won.........And for his future races "May the best man win".
