here is the perfect example of thinking something is offensive and trying to change it
the people that think it is offensive are not the ones the nickname is about.
and what is wrong with it? do we have to change everything in our brief culture to appease these right wing nuts? go eat granola or ponder more useless things.
it's simple. it doesn't matter what is said, just as long as they have something to complain about...
in phoenix, arizona, they (native americans, not that ANYONE born here is not "native") complained about "squaw peak" until the name was changed. now it is named after ANOTHER "native american" (again, ANYONE born on said soil IS native) that died in combat in iraq. this one happened to be female, so yet another "trophy" naming.
too many people are concerned with gender, race, creed, or other racist, sexist, marxist, or any other ist. I think ists are bad, but people still make a stink when their ist is not handled propperly.
just a reminder, I am half "native american", and I am ashamed of what that half does.
Wow. For once the First Nations' are in support of a tribal nickname for a school? Is that a first? It's usually the other way around. I know of a few High Schools and Colleges in my state that have felt pressure to change their mascot, and a few have caved. Either way, it's nice to see a little sanity.
Enough with this PC crap! Don't anyone change anything anymore! Our fear of offending reached a peak with the Islamic Terrorist who slaughtered our soldiers in Fort Hood when nobody had the guts to kick that guy out of the Army. Even Obama is afraid to call him a terrorist! I think we broke through that "glass ceiling" and elected a woman president after all! I'll let his all-too-private and absent birth certificate slide. What I really want is a test taken to assure me that we don't have a little girl running the country. Isn't anyone else angry that our government won't allow itself to call this jihadist a terrorist???
I'm glad that members of the Sioux nation realize that having an athletic team choose to use their name is an honor. You wouldn't call your team by the title of some group of wimps. The Sioux as well as other tribes were known for their courage and strength--two assets for any athletic team.
The tribal members should sue the conference for a few thousand and the ncaa for a few million for implying there is something wrong with being a Sioux.
By the way the Florida Semanoles have the blessing of the tribe to use that name. Yes I know it is spelled incorrectly but my spell check isn't working.
Can I call you wussie, for short? But I digress. When did the PC crowd join the right wing? I think you have your compass set on reverse.
But I thought your comment was unnecessarily brief. I missed the race card, the anti-Obama bashing, the Bush hatred, and your opinion on jews versus muslims.
The fight over the logo and nickname is a larger issue than politicial groups coming out for or against a change. As an UND student, I have seen both sides of the issue. The campaign to change started in the 1990s by the UND Native American Center then other organizations and individuals followed suit. It is not left or right or PC in manner, its out of respect.
Most of the time it is not the UND students who are disrespectful to the name, but rival schools who burn effegy, design posters showing beastality, and using the logo in crude ways. It is offensive. There has been lack of judgement by UND students at the same time, such as inapproaciate themed parties and customs.
UND is a great place. I loved my time at the school and believe my life is better because of it. There was only one thing I regret about the school and that is the waste of alumi dollars to fight the NCAA lawsuit. Its in the millions. Think about how that could have improved the education for all students, instead of a lawsuit that helps the hockey team keep its hush stadium rented for a $1 a year, because they kept the name.
This is rich! Now the "Injuns" (OMG -- how un-PC!!!! My sincere apologies!!!) WANT to be called by these "derogatory" terms!?!?!?! To HELL with this PC bullsh**t (thanks to it, we have 13 people dead and 30 wounded at Ft. Hood)!
These Indian names were meant to honor the tribes. Who picks a team nickname for their team they are embarrassed of? Is this the only tribe that understands this finally?
The problem is there are multiple branches of the Sioux tribe. The school provides financial assistance to some members of the tribe and they are proud to have their name on the school. The problem comes from those parts of the tribe that don't get financial gain from the name. THEY are the the ones who object to the name. It is about money - not political correctness.
Name a school (or professional) team after an ethnicity, you get ripped and in most cases rightly so.
Go for an apex predator, you get attacked by the radical ecologists. Same applies for animals or other organisms who are not predators....
Let me guess... one gives each team a number or alpha-numeric code, the Cylons actually appear as a reality and press a lawsuit (after they barbecue the planet)
At least national nicknames (Yankees, Patriots) and regional ones (Sooners, Phillies, Corhuskers) seem safe for the moment, but there are not enough of these to go around. Not to mention some would make the fans hurl. Could you imagine the Colorado Centennials, or the Wyoming Equalities, or get this.. the Georgia Peaches... you would definitely get some complaints there.
My suggestion is this: If you really have to go for naming a team after and ethnicity, go to the ethnicity's or nation's authorities and get permission (Like Florida State did) and if they say yes, matter settled.
not everything is as offensive as you think...

Hey, wusseltier,
Can I call you wussie, for short? But I digress. When did the PC crowd join the right wing? I think you have your compass set on reverse.

What's in a name?
Obviously a lot.
