I remember when he changed his name from Lew Alcindor, and when USC played WSU in the cracker box gym in Pullman, we all went to the game just to see him. His greatness as a player was already assured, but it took many years for him to be recognized as a great person as well.

Thank you, EW. I thought that was Lew Alcindor. I was living in Houston when I first became aware of him. He turned out to be one of the great basketball players. Our guy kept his given name.
