Nope! The Phillies and Yankees all the way!!! The world series champs up against The Yankees would be the series to see. The slugging ability of both teams is amazing. I'd rather see the Cards up against NY Before L.A. But Philly and N.Y. and it's on!!!
LA & Yanks would be fine. Torre coming back still winning would be a nice touch. LA & Red Sox would also click. Manny vs the old club, and all that. A good 7-game series featuring lots of plays that show why the teams made it would be great, no matter who the teams are.
Greatest fans, what a joke. Real fans don't turn on there players at the first sign of trouble they stick with them through good and bad. It's to bad baseball didn't put a salary cap on like the NFL so big market teams like the Yankmees couldn't buy all the talent. Then the so called greatest fans in the world would probably leave there billion $ stadium sit empty on game day because they wouldn't be able to buy the wins. Nothing but a bunch of spoiled boo birds in NY.
Unfortunately, the Angels are gonna put the kibosh on the Yankee's season before the Dodger's can dismantle them and their AL watered down version of baseball. The Angels, just like the Dodgers, have a more multi-dimensional team than the Yanks. Speed, bullpen, and bench are edges both LA teams have over NY. I'll also match up both LA team's starting eight with NY any day.
NY has a few great players but both LA teams have great complete TEAMS! The LA Coliseum is once again ready to show the world how to celebrate So Cal Style!!!
I think the best matchup is whoever wins their series. This is about who is the best, not who draws the most viewers. So sorry the media can't max revenue with a small market team, but that is half a reason why I will root for them. This is not for the media's benefit, they will make their money anyway, so I am not too concerned about it.
And another thing, you reference the tough economic times, so it is supposed to make us feel better that two teams with unlimited funds compared to their competitors once again get over on the average Joes? The privileged few can play, the rest of you are props? Is that the metaphor that we are supposed to embrace? So the "New York Bankees" playing the Hollywood Dollars is supposed to make me feel better? Its what comes to mind.... I think the Yankees represent what goes on with Wall Street pretty well; is that what you want to remind Americans of? That's brilliant! Talk about out of touch, Celizic.
You make a good point however that the best match up is about the best but let's face it, we have 30 teams with 162 games all played out regionally without a hot matchup the series is just another game. To be honest in 2003 the ALCS was a way more exciting series the the yawn 2003 World Series. As far as the Yankees being equated with Wall Street it just shows you really have no understanding of the mind set of the New York Area. There are 9 professional sports teams, Broadway shows, casinos, beaches, museums and more. The New York area teams spend to compete with other venues however the key word there is spend. The teams that spend also have an impact on the teams that don't they draw a higher road attendance then the teams that don't and that is good for all of baseball. If it weren't for the TV contract the Yankees got way back from Cablevision they may not be as big as they are but George took the huge TV contract and put it back into his team and made it even bigger and that is what we need to remind American about an owner who reworded his fans with the revenue he got instead of pocketing it and living off the revenue sharing and luxury taxes of those teams that put on a good show. Baseball is entertainment after all as well as a sport.
Are you kidding me...the best are the yankees and dodgers...if money buys it than money buys it...what would you be doing with 240 millon payroll dollars if you had it...I'm sure you'd be home counting it one penny at a time...sounds like you may be a bit out of touch, but the first sentence of your comment was correct, and that is how it shall be...I'd bet you live in Iowa
There is one good thing about the mentality of writers like Celzic. Whenever these wealthy teams stub their toes and get beat by a team with a smaller payroll, you usually see the following.
1. Finger pointing (defective cogs in the otherwise almighty machine). 2. Accusations of bad calls by the umpires, 3. Griping about nobody cares about any other teams besides the rich ones (narcissism at it's best)
This is something that will probably never change about major league baseball in my lifetime. However, you can really find some great entertainment in all of the whining (especially people like Celzic who do it so publicly!)
Thanks BH0673, but really the Yanks have the best offense in the Al, The Phillies in the NL. It is what it is. The Phillies led the NL in doubles, home runs, slugging percentage, RBIs and runs scored. They were also second in stolen bases. New York led the AL in hits, homers, walks, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. I my opinion this would be the series to watch. The Yankees although a better rounded offensive force, don't have the Defense that the Phillies have. It's a well rounded match up, the best match up IMO.
Celizic is a huge yankee fan and anything he writes or comments on is always in favor of the frickin' yankees. There are probably more people out there who hate the yankees than like the yankees.
Are there any writers out there who write about baseball for the love of baseball instead of a team?
Only to bi-coastal big media writers like Celizic. They like the big media market teams with their celebrity fans and to stick it to those teams that represent Middle America and, like the Rockies, have never or seldom won this thing.
I am a Yankees fan who feels that Joe Torre got a raw deal from the Steinbrenners. Nothing would give me greater pleasure than for the Joe Torre to outmanage Joe Girardi and win the World Series! That would definitely be "thumbing ones nose" at the Steinbrenners.
I'm the very same, Yankee fan but sure would love to see the Dodger's spank the Yankees just for Joe Torre's revenge to tell the Steinbrenners to 'shove it up their butts'!
With the teams that now remain I too would be interested in seeing the Red Sox vs. Dodgers matchup - yes Manny vs his old team. Otherwise, I always prefer a team from the middle of the country (of course where I live) to two coast teams.
MSNBC is just like all other news organizations (and media in general) - bi-coastal. If it don't happen in New York or LA, it don't happen. That said, the best match-up from a pure baseball standpoint would be the best two franchises in baseball: the Cardinals and the Yankees. That would also match-up two of the best players in modern baseball: Albert Pujols and Derek Jeter. Now THAT would be a world series!
The matchup would be great for baseball. It would bring back older fans who remembered Reggie’s 3-homer night, Koufax beating Whitey Ford twice in the 63 WS, Yankee dominance in the late 40’s and early 50’s and the Dodgers first Championship in 1955. The World Series brings the best out of these two franchises and they are two of the most popular and hated franchises in baseball. Its not just about ratings, fan interest is key. Over 20% of the US population lives within their metro areas and would undoubtedly draw interest from even casual fans. MLB lost 7% in attendance this year and is losing more ground to the NFL and NBA every season. Besides, the Dodgers are the best team in the NL and the Yankees are the best team in the AL, record wise. So if you want the best teams, this is the match up. Also the Torre vs. Steinbrenner story is fantastic.
The Yankees and Dodgers would be perfect. You could call it the "Steroid Series" featuring A-Rod and Manny. It fits MLB to a "T". They would pass "roids" around before the series and Bud Selig as usual will look the other way. Perfect!
Would LOVE to see Twins vs. Rockies! Snowball's chance in H*ll, sure, but hey! It would make for great competition to have 2 small market teams slay giants and make it into the Big Show. Would especially love to see the fattest payroll in baseball watching on TV along with those of us who could never afford tickets to any of this.
To Keith -- "We've had the Twins and Cardinals before"???? Give me a break!!!!!!! How many times in the past 20 years have the Yankees been there? Now how many more is that than the Cardinals and Twins combined.
Let's have some teams that don't use drugs and money to try to buy performance. Pure baseball alone says the Cardinals should be there-yes I am a Cardinals fan but use some sense folks.
Ragtop - You said "Pure baseball alone says the Cardinals should be there" What?? Ankiel has used steroids and what about McGwire? I didn't hear Cards fans complain then. I'm not condoning usage at all because its dishonest. But bottom line, the Cards are the worst team in the NL and second worst team in the playoffs overall and that’s playing a lopsided number of games in the weakest division in the league. Pure baseball alone says your team won't make it out of the first round. The playoffs are always a tossup which is the best part, but you are a total homer in this case. Nothing wrong with that, so am I. The Dodgers in 4!
Arodoll--Wow so you really must be pissed at Manny huh? I mean since you're getting so righteous about drug users in baseball. Let's not forget that the Cardinals have a genuine star in Pujols, and Mark McGuire has lost all credibility in St. Louis since that whole mess. But why is it Manny is still so loved??? And if the Dodgers are so great, why haven't they won a title since the 80s?
Nope! The Phillies and Yankees all the way!!! The world series champs up against The Yankees would be the series to see. The slugging ability of both teams is amazing. I'd rather see the Cards up against NY Before L.A. But Philly and N.Y. and it's on!!!

It aint about payroll - its about players, and heart, and fans!
VERY well said, beowulfen!

There is a difference betwen spending big and spending right. This is the first year in a long time the Yankees spent right.
No way! The unending wallet vs. Hollywood glitz? Are you kidding me?
I have to agree with Jonny5 Phillies vs Yankees would be the better series.

Just checked on this season. Phillies vs. N.Y.Y in N.Y. 2-1 Phills . Maybe the Yankees don't want to see the Phillies in the W.S. ;>)~

It would be awesome to see Joe Torre beat the crap out of the Steinbrenners.
With the teams that now remain I too would be interested in seeing the Red Sox vs. Dodgers matchup - yes Manny vs his old team. Otherwise, I always prefer a team from the middle of the country (of course where I live) to two coast teams.
I like the Twins and Cardinals. Let two small market teams from the midwest duke it out!
we've had the twins and cardinals before....let's go for something new
SMALL Market teams? The Cardinals are one of the best teams in History. Check your world series facts.
MSNBC is just like all other news organizations (and media in general) - bi-coastal. If it don't happen in New York or LA, it don't happen. The history the Dodgers have against the Yankees in the World Series would make it a good series of games to watch this time around.

If the Dodgers win today they'll sweep.
The whole country is sick of the Yankees and their billion dollar payroll. Dodgers will be knocked out of the first round - GO CARDS!!!!!
