The ads are an ambush as far as I'm concerned...On the West Coast the games start at 4 and 5 P.M. You would think that ED was a Pandemic with as many as every other touchdown the same commercial runs. How about the R rated movies that are advertised at that time. Some of the ads are definitely R. Hey Dad why are there two naked people in separite bathtubs floating in a lake... Don't they like football...? Of course two people in two bathtubs really makes sense..You scrub my back, and I will scrub your back...Hygiene must be the real issue...Those ads seem like four hours....
Oh for the love of.....PROFESSIONAL SPORTS IS NOT A FAMILY ACTIVITY. Pro sports are for mature audiences.
Whoever the hell decided to make the NFL more 'family friendly' is KILLING the sport. That is exactly why arena football failed, TOO MANY MILQUETOAST AD GIMMICKS.
Now there is a "NFL Rules of Conduct". YOU can't even POLITELY RAG on the guy sitting next to you rooting for the opposition in your home stadium.
If a parent thinks erectile dysfunction drug ads, or beer ads are not for their children THEN KEEP THEM IN THEIR ROOMS. That way, they can watch porn on the home computer!
Hypocrites. STAY THE HELL OUT OF MY STADIUM, BREEDER.
Wow, you are a bit extreme Rick Day.
I told my husband who loves Football Season about the commercials, he said that our children are boys, ages 15 and 10 and that it is okay for them to watch the game because they know right from wrong.
I personally think they are too mature for the general audience, which includes children!
I agree the sports broadcasts are not aimed at kids! Kids should be doing their chores during commercial breaks or refilling the chip bowl.....better yet, they should be OUTSIDE playing!
Besides, the 15-sec promos for the local news are far worse than any ads.
"School bus burns! Tune in, after the game!" "Thirty shot dead at local college!" "Babies kidnapped at convenience store!" "Grandparents home reposessed!" "Details of plastic surgery in-depth report!"
Really....either kick the kids out of the room or take the radical approach and TALK to them about what's in the ads. OMG!
IF parents do't want their kids to see those "racy" ads, fine. They don't need to be watching those "role models" that play today anyway.
Prima Donas, druggies, thiefs. What a bunch of role models for our kids to grow up like.
Rick Day, are you so bitter because you can't find someone to "breed" with? Hmmmm.....
BTW my problem is watching it with my parents - should I keep them in their rooms too?
The tyranny of the family strikes again. Fine, don't let your kids watch sports and please keep them out of the stadiums too. Sports are a time to get rowdy and support your teams not listen to some soccer mom complain that someone said a "bad word". This country is going to turn the next generation into the biggest bunch a whiny wimps yet.
The ads are one thing, the TV shows are another ... and they both make far too many assumptions about the sexual behavior and morality of the audience. What's portrayed as "normal" behavior in both ads and shows is far out of whack with the way we think about ourselves, the way we want to be, or the way we want our kids to be. I don't watch these shows on either regular or DVR TV. So, perversely, sporting events are safe because they're free of Hollywood and Madison Ave scripts, and I can speed by the commercials.
It's a world gone mad! :)
So Brain and Erica, should we start rating sporting events according to sexual content? True, it's not always about 'our kids' and we don't expect it to be. It's also not always about your freedom and personal standards. That's childish. I've always enjoyed watching sports with my kids, just like my father, his father, and so on.
Sexual ads are unnecessary and over the top. No, that's not picky and we're not prudish. It's called being discreet. Maybe you don't worry about it in your home, but responsible parents I know...ranging from bikers to religious zealots... are sensitive to information being delivered at the propety time for each child, and according to their maturity level.
Sporting events should not be the place we have to cringe about that delivery.
I completely agree. There's a time and a place for Erectile Dysfunction spots etc. My children are grown but I find these commercials ridiculus. Are you listening, Pfizer?
No Polega, on examples of stupidity, childishness, morality and lawlessness. Those are things that the NFL, NBA and MLB don't know a thing about.
Although I believe in and support free speech, smart / 'target' marketing focuses on the appropriate audience. TV ads with any type of adult content should 'air' after prime time!
We constantly makes jokes about the Cialis ads. A generation of kids will think that you have to get into a bathtub outside in order to have sex. I don't think that what kids see on TV influences them that much, it's what they see in their own homes that makes the biggest impression. I have observed from my sons college age friends that the biggest drinkers come from homes where the parents drink heavily, ditto on smokers. I have also noticed that the kids whose parents are divorced seem to have the most relationship problems. But these are just my observations, nothing scientific.
Yeah, what is it with those bathtubs? They're not even in the same tub!?! Must be some medicine!
If I had wood for more than 4 hours, I'd call my doctor to thank him profusely!!!
Polego hit the nail on the head!
I am all for free speech, however, smart / 'target' marketing focuses on the appropriate audience. TV ads with any adult content should be shown/ 'aired' after prime time!
If the ads don't change don't watch and don't buy tickets. All they know is money!
I would happily live without "viva" or the leering "supplement" folks ever again. They are all over the cable news in the morning for goodness sake. Not what I want to see before my coffee, thank you very much. Professional sports ought to consider how many fans they will have in ten years if parents don't dare let their kids watch with them. I think it is sad that now we have "kids" stations that are clean and everything else is a sewer. When I was growing up, I learned to appreciate music, art and drama by being able to participate in the same entertainment as my parents enjoyed, without them having to turn the channel. Kids can't do that anymore.
1 In this economy you take the ad $ where you can find them. If they're legal you air them. If you get fussy, you'll never be able to air the games.
2 Excuse me all you Mama-sans out there but doesn't daytime tv run non-stop ads about feminine hygiene products? Enough of that already too -!
3 Never mind the 24/7 news broadcasts - when I want to diet I just watch them - not hungery after that. Blood, gore, bad news, scandal, crime, frauds and indolance yuck!
Put tv on mute for the whole game. With all the graphics I don't need to hear some of the lame announcers. I have been watching sports tv for 40 some years. With the HDTV put it on pause, go get a beer, fast forward to the action and skip the ads. Try it!
I don't think the ad content is that bad (so tired of erectile dysfunction), but I don't watch/listen attentively to ads anyway. I don't have kids at home, but the manufacturers sure are not selling me anything!
Forget about the kids, I find them disgusting, revolting, or otherwise offensive.
And besides, they can always follow those ads with Public Service Announcements warning against the consequences of teenage drinking, sex, drugs, etc. They seem to really do the job.
Hopefully this time something will be done and those awful ED adds will be moved to an appropriate time. They don't need to ban them from the airwaves they just need to respect the family time.
you have a right to change the channel and you have the responsibility to inform your children about things they see on TV. lets not leave it to the media or government to teach us on how to raise our children. Kids are not stupid let's give them credit.
It's the violence I can't stand. If it's not sex it's lots and lots of violence. The Ad business thinks that the American public needs to see explosions, fighting, severe injury and crashes. It seems that the American public goes for this and it sells. Knock someone over the head and your product is sold.
And now we need to talk about civility???
What is easier to explain to a 7 year old girl Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction or erictile dysfunction?
A good parent takes the time to explain to their child why such ads are trash rather than sheltering their children from ads they will be bombarded with when they move out of the house. Sheltering your child is a mistake, pure and simple. Preparing your child for the negatives of the real world is one of the best gifts you can give them. Otherwise they're just naive and will be taken advantage of.
While I agree with you that simply sheltering your child isn't a good thing, it also isn't good to just expose your kids (or make no attempt to protect them) so that they won't be naive, even if you are explaining it as they go. generally speaking for boys, it only takes one glimpse of pornography for him to get hooked (generally - i know there may be exceptions). I personally was quite sheltered, and my parents didn't have to show me what was bad to teach me about it. Teach your children the principles of protecting/covering your body, guarding your sight against the "lust of the eyes" (i.e. guarding against those who don't cover their bodies), and the proper role of sex (in marraige) and they will know what they see when they see it.
I am retired and usually watch some of the geekier channels, but I was flipping through the national broadcasting networks the other day and "soap operas" are nothing like what my mother watched. Good grief. People (who look totally nude)rolling around in a bed or having sex on a table...in the dirt....on the hood of a car? What on earth? These are shown during the daytime. How many young children ae watching these while their mother, babysitter or pre-school teacher aren't paying attention?

This is a gathering of links, stories and votes that the editors at NBCSports.com like. Hopefully, Newsvine also like 'em.
People are getting too damn picky anymore. For the people calling to have the ads removed, that is censorship.
