How should the Yankees handle development of Joba Chamberlain?

The New York Yankees are keeping a close watch on Joba Chamberlain's innings, but one could argue such a philosophy will keep the young pitcher from building up his arm strength. What should they do?

they made a huge mistake moving him from set-up, keep him as the set-up man and make him the closer when rivera retires!

He was more of a threat out of the bul pen but seems at times a deer in the headlights as a starter

Move him back to the bullpen

His most effective work was an 8th inning setup man for Mariano. Return him to that position and groom him to be his eventual replacement.

I think they could play him a little more than they are. But I do understand trying to keep him healthy for the playoffs is a good idea....

Wake Me When It's Over

Rivera didn't work out as a starter, but found his role as a closer. Joba looks like deja vu all over again - he belongs in the bullpen.

Wake me when it's over you are right, Rivera was inconsistant as a starter but as a closer one of the best. In Joba I have seen the same thing as a starter too inconsistant or has that one bad inning and loses it or gets roughed up then regains his dominance on occasion. Now I will say from July on it seemed he was very good and when they started limiting his innings again lost it. Hughes I still think will grow into a better starter in time but Joba I agree should be groomed as Rivera's replacement where I can see him as one of the best closers.

Hey, Yankees ----- Bullpen, no question. Sure, Joba could win a few games as a starter, but he is without question a reliever. It is not worth it to have him starting when he has a TREMENDOUS career ahead of him as a DOMINANT closer. Have him gradually position himself to take the place of Mariano, assuming he ever retires. Long term, Yankees. Think long term.

The Yanks screwed this all up. I'm sure it's from the front office and not the manager. It's so obvious, he should be the 8th inning guy and Hughes should be the starter. Hughes doesn't need an innings count. He's been a pro for 5 years now.

Hughes, and Joba closing team! join them together, don"t seperate them. Hughes has been excelling why change that.

In my eighty years 75 as a diehard yankee fan this coaching staff is the most incompetent i have ever seen . Girardi standing or leaning with his arms crossed ,similar to napoleon. It appears that the real napolean knows more about baseball than Girardi and that so called pitching coach. Who uses the leadoff batter as a DH, starts off road trips with wierd lineups and has only a three man starting rotation. I thought we could walk away with the division ,now i am not sure we can make the wild card.GET A NEW COMPETeNT MANAGER and Pitching coach before this group blows away the shot at a world series chmionship.

Joba was most effective as a setup man for Mariano.Return him that position immediately and groom him to be Rivera's replacement when he retires.If you keep messing with him,you will destroy his confidense and render him dysfunctional.He's approaching that level now.
