Sure he knew what he was doing just like he did a Umass. I know he is a good coach but I don't know so much about his character and dumping Memphis like he did. Don't tell me he didn't know what was coming down the pike. Why do you think he was so anxious to go to Kentucky even when he was offered more by Memphis. I predict 4 years and gone to the pros where they don't care so much about a persons character.
No respect for this kind of coach, who doesn't respect his players, the fans and the game.

Calipari recruits bandits; can't way to see Pitino and him turn each other in.
Just like Kelvin Sampson at Indiana, Kentucky should realize what they are getting. Outstanding coaches who happen to break rules when it means they will get the type of players that win games. The T.V. money is so huge, the coaches contracts so obscene, the pressure to win from schools, alumni and media so pervasive, no wonder this stuff happens. Ultimately though, the head coach is responsible to police his program, and make sure integrity exists. Otherwise, why not simply pay the college players a decent salary for their services. NCAA rules are arcane, and punitive, and do little to ensure "amateur" status exists in college sports.
Thank goodness Louisville has an honorable guy like Rick Pitino doing the coaching. The bottom line here is that college and pro sports fans don't care who does what as long as their idolized team wins. Just a fact of American life. A sad fact, but a fact.
Kentucky did their homework when they hired him. THE NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE did not do their's. When you are CLEARED you are eligible to play for a school. Then you get coached when the NCAA says you can. No one has CHARGED Calipari with any wrongdoing at either school. Mitch Barnhardt was in trouble with the Gillespie hiring and firing. Believe me he did his homework with Calipari.
Very well said... how is it fair that the clearinghouse gets to have a re do on this? They cleared him to play... it's on them if it was a mistake. How is this the fault of Memphis and I certainly don't see how Calipari gets the blame.
I live in Amherst. UMass BB got in trouble over Marcus Camby, and Calipari Quit. Now Memphis is in trouble over Derrick Rose, and Calipari Quits. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Kentucky should fire Calipari before he starts, and let him coach at some Division III school. The man is slime.
Did he know? Would he care even if he knew? I'd like to see the grade transcript for Rose after he got to Memphis. How did he actually do in his classes? After all the SAT is not geared to minority students is it [Jason Kidd getting into Cal after multiple takes was a good example], so it would be interesting to see if Rose passed "Basket Weaving 101" or whatever courses he was supposed to be taking for his 12 semester hours. Or, did someone take his exams and write his papers too? But thanks to, was it the Buckley Act? the info is supposed to be private and public will probably never know.
March Madness is my favorite sporting event of the year. I also watch a lot of college basketball throught the season. My concern though is that for the big schools it is becoming more a business like the NBA and that takes the fun and excitemnt out of it. The kids are so much more fun to watch but it's becoming less like that and more like the league of criminals in shorts (NBA)
While I agree that Coach Cal recruits players that no one else will touch, I remember a situation when I was at UMass where he actually kicked a good player off the team because they were so much trouble. Anyone remember Mike Williams? he could hit clutch three-pointers like nobody else. But off-court he was so much trouble that coach cal sent him back home. I've always wondered just what he did to finally get kicked off.
it's john the con....don't forget memphis with dana kirk and ku with eddie sutton...they all know what they're getting...but it's win at all cost
Opinions are like a&%holes. Everyone has one. Celizic says one thing and DeCourcy takes his stand. Are either of them privy to the details of what really happened? I doubt it!!
Is it possible that Calipari and his staff were aware or complicit in the Canby or Rose affairs? Or not? Before he takes the personal blame for either these scandals, Cal should call for a full and comprehensive investigation of both scandals. If no proof or "smoking guns" can tie Cal to the actions of the two recruits, Celizic can shut up. If the investigation ties Calipari to their actions, then DeCorcy can eat his words and Cal should be permanently banned from coaching at any NCAA level. The NBA would gladly greet him to their ranks. After all, he has shown that he can win at all costs.
As a fellow 'burgher, I personally hope that Cal is not involved so that his life in or out of the NCAA can go on without the weight of these unseemly scandals hanging over him.
Bottom line is the only reason Camby got caught is Cali turned him in. Two you cant know everything your players do off the court. Three the NCAA is to blame also they cleared him to play college ball. I also bet that if your school could have got Rose you would have taken him. Also you Memphis fans loved Cali wanted him to stay and now he is gone and you hate him not because of any of these problems but because he left your school. Also the NCAA picks and chooses who it gets in trouble and who it lets go. One person give me an answer on Duke and Maggette. Duke has been under investigation for what 17 years over that matter. The only reason nothing will come out of that is its Duke and they would loses a Championship and another final four. This has been blown way out of proportion and the ncaa has not even proved that Rose never took the test so Memphis should have not lost anything. Also Cali helped he NCAA with the investigation.

A coach cannot watch a player 24/7 that he coaches, let alone one he wants to recruit. Not on the level of Tark the Shark
