Opinion: We've been waiting for a true rival to emerge to Woods for the better part of a dozen years now. We'll be waiting another dozen and it still may never happen.
Wait continues for a Tiger rival to emerge

The author of this story is obviously biased against Mr. Woods. While conceding that Tiger will probably win his 15th major, he can't seem to help himself from throwing in a zinger at Tiger, who he describes as one who curses and throws clubs around the course. What an exaggeration, useless and mean-spirited hyperbole by a poor writer. The big story coming out of Hazeltine is that Tiger seems poised to win another major and get to within 3 of Mr. Nicklaus. The writer seems to want to jump on the bandwagon of writers who find Tiger's on-course demeanor reprehensible. Check the TV viewership numbers--when Tiger is in contention viewership jumps 100%. People aren't dumb or suckers, if we found Tiger to be as vile as some writers purport, those numbers would actually be down. Get a grip, enjoy a performance by a man who is nearly better than anyone in his profession in history. The writer would be so fortunate as to climb to the top of his own profession just once.
While the author of this article waits for a rival to magically appear, I will continue to enjoy watching golf played at the highest level it's been played in the 900 year history of the sport. Tiger's only rival each week is the golf course itself. That is his only opponent . He stares down the golf course, slashes through it's defenses, sneakingly crafts his shots through the air to set up the perfect angle to the hole or to position the ball underneath the pin. He slams his clubs into the golf course when it beats him, only to strike back with a shot of brilliance that leaves announcers and other mere mortals in awe. Only Tiger could lash back at the course with a 200 yard 7 iron around the trees buried deep within the sand that nobody else in the history of the game could even dare try.
History will show Tiger is the greatest golfer since the Scottish began hitting balls into rabbit holes at St Andrews in the 12th Century. His ability to perform better under extreme duress is a gift reserved for the few Chosen Ones. Give Tiger a challenge to sink a 35 footer for $1 Billion and he would hole it center-cut, where mere mortals would simply wilt under the pressure and the putter would feel like swinging a bowling ball. He crushes his rivals into submission to the point where there ARE no rivals. Tiger's only rival comes in the form of Michael Jordan and perhaps Roger Federer, not coincidentally both good friends of Tiger. Throughout the 20th Century, add Babe Ruth and Pele and Muhammad Ali to this list.
It is fitting that the birth place of golf, Scotland, is Tiger's greatest rival and so rarely gives up it's virginity to the greatest warrior in history. In 2010, when the British Open returns to St Andrews, Tiger Woods will attempt to conquer his greatest nemesis, the birthplace of Golf in the 12th Century. Tiger has vanquished St Andrews the last 2 times, in 2000 and 2005. Will he defeat his greatest rival on his quest for immortality?
Tiger is the only player that can beat Tiger.
In the end, greatness silences all critics
There is no doubt that Tiger is the best golfer, but I would argue that it is his will and drive that makes him so, rather than his talent. I think there are more naturally talented golfers, but no one works harder, or wants it more than he does. With the exception of Singh, I don't think anyone else really cares as much about being the best as Tiger. When you can make a half-mil for second place, why bother? When you can live fat and happy just by having your tour card, who cares about being the best? The other golfers are perfectly content to let Tiger run away with it, and Tiger will take it because he is the only one who cares about besting Nicklaus and being the greatest of all time. As Arnie once said, in his day, you were good, or you worked at the salt mines. You don't see that anymore.
Pete G it is so sad you can't see the reality that is Tiger Woods, and even worse you obviously don't understand the sport of Golf. Tiger Woods is simply THE BEST in the game; a cut above his peers in Golf. One of the best Athletes the globe has ever seen. WAKE UP! But then again, keep dreaming--who cares? We know what the angst is all about.....
I can't wait to see someone beat Woods. The author is correct. He is the epitome of poor sportsmanship. As long as he's winning, he's Mr. Nice Guy but some bad shots and he DOES throw clubs and curse. Not the kind of guy I would think highly of regardless of his talent. Talent is never an excuse for childish, unsportsmanslike behavior. Maybe viewership goes up when he is playing because golf fans are hoping to see him lose.
I am simply astonished at the way this man plays this game. It is true that he really is not playing against the field. He is playing against legends that will never pick up a club again. But is he really the best ever? I tend to think so but there are other things to consider. Who is his competetion? Certainly it seems the talent level is very good. But I think that a lot of that talent comes from the new equipment and better physical condition. I really do not believe that there is another golfer today that has what it takes between the ears to compete with Woods. All these guys seem to be like deer caught in the headlights when he's in contention. Even Harrington says that when Tiger is playing his A game nobody can beat him. I find it extremely unlikely that Jack's major nemesis' would ever THINK, much less say something like that. Trevino, Palmer, Watson, Crenshaw, Watson, Floyd et al....never, ever would back down from Jack. Trevino and Floyd especially were like sharks. None of those guys were afraid of Jack....even when he was beating them on a consistant basis. Yes he beat them with his game....but he never beat them by getting into their head before ever teeing it up like Tiger does. Sorry folks. the mental toughness on the tour as a whole just is not what it was 25-35 years ago. I really think the closest thing there was to that was David Duval until he lost his game and confidence. But we'll never know now.
Every Golfer in the US would love to play a round of golf with Tiger Woods. He is hailed as the greatest golfer today and brings pride and honor to the US. Many Republican Law Makers play golf such as John Boehner and others would love the chance to play golf with Tiger. Even the golfers who are currently protesting against Health Care and caring signs of hate/kill Obama would drop the Town Hall Meeting for a golf match with Tiger. Yes a dream of many even the Racist would fake their feeling to be on the golf course with Tiger.
HELLO TIGER WOODS IS BLACK AND PROUD OF IT. For those who carry Racism in their hearts it's makes me laugh how these guys fall all over themselves for a Black Man.
Why do you discuss race at all? We're talking about a man and the greatest golfer to ever live. Do you sign your name as Jackie Rawlings or Black Man and Proud of it? Be who you are and don't represent a race of people. Everyone on this planet is an individual, not a stereotype.
I knew I would happen. Some liberal azzwipe couldn't wait to bring race into this discussion You are a sorry excuse for a human jackierwings. Your racism sucks, go climb backinto your hole. On another note Tiger Woods is the best golfer in his time. But I will tell you one and all, you put Woods back in the days of the great golfers and Woods would maybe make the top 10. Ben Hogan the greatest golfer ever would tear Tiger apart, so would Nicklaus, Palmer, Trevino, Watson, Miller, Byron Nelson, I could go on but anyone with a brain gets my point. Woods is good but not great, he has a long way to go until he could even carry Ben Hogans jock strap.
Lowrider
While I don't share some of your views on Liberalism in general, I do share you beliefs on the inappropriatness people bringing racism into this discussion and, more importantly, your view on who the greatest golfer of all time is. Were it not for his automobile accident that may have cost him a bunch more wins, we probably would not even be discussing Jack's accomplishments. Ben Hogan...The greatest pure ball striker and long iron player in the history of the game. Add to that that he played against a bunch of absolute Gods of this game that would never even THINK about being beaten before they even teed it up.
It is easy to be great when you have no competition. Utah was undefeated this past year, having played a weak field of opponents. Does anyone say they should have been #1? Larry Holmes may have been the greatest heavyweight ever, but will anyone give him his due fighting bums like Leon Spinks and coming after the Ali-Frazier-Foreman-Norton era? No.
The fact is, Tiger is not good enough to come from behind and win - he relies on the fact that his competition is crap, which is borne out by the fact that none of them have ever come from behind to beat him, despite the fact that 8 of his majors have been won when he short one under par or higher and the chance was there to win. It's borne out by the fact that Nicklaus finished second 22 times to Tiger's 3, because 16 of those 22 times he was losing to the other greats of the game - Watson, Trevino, Player, Palmer and Ballesteros - all of whom had 6 or more majors. Any of the bums out there going to win 6 majors?
Watson's performance at the British Open puts the lie to Tiger Woods - the fact that a 59 year old can beat all of today's "top" golfers, the fact that Stewart Cink - one of the bums that was supposed to rival Tiger - has to back into a win and says he's proud of it instead of being embarrassed at how he got to win, it all shows us that we are witnessing the decline of competitive golf.
It's nothing but the technology and a sport where you can finish 8th in one tournament, 13th in another, and then just make the cut 10 other times and make $500,000 in a year - none of them care about winning. Tiger is great, sure, but never can be the greatest.
I think Harrington has the best shot to challenge Woods. That being said, if he continues playing like he has the last 2 days he is not only going to win, but might do so by 6+ strokes.
