NBCSports.com chose the Top 5 NFL MVP candidates. If you think we got it wrong, then tell us! You can send in your own top 5 and tell us who should have made the list!
While these players are all probably locks for great seasons statistically, only one, maybe two of these have a real shot. Johnson and Fitzgerald won't do it, lets face it, receivers don't win this award, especially not receivers on teams surrounded by other talent (Steve Slaton, Owen Daniels, Matt Schaub; Kurt Warner, Anquan (sp?) Boldin, etc). While Brees is a good quarterback, his team isn't usually in position to win more than 9 games, which is a pretty common quality of MVPs. Brady has done it before and is therefore probably a lock to be in the discussion, and does have a real shot at the title. Peterson is a bright young star on a team that leans on him, and could well have the best chance on this list, especially if Brett Favre signs with the Vikings and opens things up for him. My choice has to be Other, though, and i'm going to throw into the mix both Peyton Manning (for the same reasons as Brady: experience, supporting cast, consistency) and Ben Roethlisberger. I figure another winning season and an improved passing game (forced by a weakened ground attack) gives Big Ben better numbers, the wins, and a run at a third Super Bowl ring this decade. Definately MVP stuff.
Why is Tom Brady even on this list? Two years ago sure, absolutely belongs on the list. He missed all of last season and hasn't played a down since his injury and he's being predicted as the MVP? There are so many other players that have stats especially from last season that would put them on the list. Ben Roethlisberger, Peyton Manning, and others that are on the list.
I am not sure that last years STATS are a determining factor for this year, rather a projection of the upcoming season.
2 years ago Brady had silly numbers, now they have added Galloway (WR) and Taylor (RB) plus Smith and Baker (TE) not too mention it will be Moss & Brady's 2nd year together.
This offense should be - could be even more potent than 2007!?
I agree that Andre Johnson and Larry Fitz dont have much of a chance playing wideout for average teams! Donavan McNabb and Peyton Manning certainly will be in the discussion if their teams have successful seasons. I think McNabb is poised to have a monster season after last years great finish and with the off season signings. I think of those listed Adrian Peterson has the best shot of being MVP this season.
Where is Ben Roethlisberger???? Does 2 rings in 5 years mean anything??? And what about Peyton Manning??? Even if he still didn't have a ring, he would still belong in the top 5. Both of these QBs are clearly the leaders on their teams. Granted, Big Ben got his 1st ring with the help of a great supporting cast, but in SB XLIII, he CLEARLY was the leader and had really improved his passing accuracy and scrambling ability. Just look at the winning drive--that will be known as DRIVE 2 in NFL lore! (Ironically, Ben's hero was John Elway--number 7.) I don't disagree with Tom Brady--after all, he does have rings, but I'm waiting to see how he comes back from his injury. Drew Brees is a very good QB, but he doesn't have a ring yet? And Fitzgerald and Peterson are very good in their positions and I would not eliminate them from the list, but they don't have RINGS!! Isn't that the holy grail in the NFL?
Steeler1. Your arguement is strong but the MVP award is an individual award for the regular season therefore the fact that some of the candidates have not won Super Bowls is not important in this debate. I agree Roethlisberger is a legit candidate, but so is Adrian Peterson. Players like John Brown and Dan Marino and Eric Dickerson never won Super Bowls but they were certainly MVP players and Hall of Fame players!
Lets get the Silver Fox on that list, Favre is having a great year, leads the NFL in QB rankings, only has 3 interceptions, and is inspiring the Vikings to play at a high level. Granted the younger guys can outplay him, but I really doubt that any other QB could perform as well as Favre if they were still playing at his age. If Favre stays healthy and the Vikings make the Super Bowl, then I predict that Favre will be the league's MVP.

So where's Ben Rothleisberger of the Steeler's???
Ben Roethlisberger will be the MVP. The man does not get nearly the credit he deserves and all he does is win.

Sure, as long as they can protect his knees. This is an injury that may cause him some real problems, as people are going to be gunning for that knee.
Why does everyone keep forgetting about Brady Quinn?
Probably cause he hasn't done anything, on a team that hasn't done anything.

You know McNabb may very well be the dark horse here. They have certainly upgraded their offense, line, wr and rb's.
Could be the one.
Walter Jones, the best lineman the past decade.
