Well said. But you know what, all Opens are memorable. That's the beauty of this tournament - for every player that graces the leaderboard during the week, there's always a great story.
"impossible to find anyone who isn't rooting for him"???? Mickelson? Impossible???? well, all of the other golfers, for a start, and their families...and what about all the people WHO CAN"T STAND MICKELSON!?????? Who always hated him, even BEFORE all this bilge about his wife and her problem!? good god! The man is a choker and a phony and a twit. Millions of people cannot stand him! As for "support" where was he for MY breast cancer? Where was he during MY five surgeries, eh? Not that I care, or that I would ever bring it up (I don't even talk about it, it's a damned cliche to get breast cancer any more); it's just the point that it's all about PHIL and all about AMY and look at us, look at me, poor me, five second-place finishes, who gives a rip!?????
The media drive me NUTS with this Phil worship. they really do. How dare a writer say it's impossible to find someone not rooting for him. We were rooting for a collapse, a cave, an embolism. His wife wanted a trophy? Jeee, I wonder if anyone else's wife or sister or mother or BROTHER (hello?) or daughter or girlfriend wanted a trophy. Amy Mick's wedding ring is bigger than most trophies out there. God I hope he finally retires so the writers will give it a REST ALREADY!
My mother died of breast cancer in March, it's not a cliche, it's real. Get some therapy or some ridlen, whichever is available at a moment's notice because you have some real issues that cannot be addressed here.
The most interesting storyline, in my opinion, was how David Duval performed. His has been a long and dark road but he has travelled it and is back. Imagine being ranked number one and then falling to 882nd! He could have drifted off into oblivion but decided he wanted to play championship level golf again and he started over. To me that is what sports is all about - never quit. Admittedly, Duval is not the charismatic type and seems emotionless and aloof but I remember how pumped and emotional he was as a member of Ben Crenshaw's Ryder Cup team. Anyone who remembers Duval pumping his fists in the air being a cheerleader understands that there is a real human being behind his sunglasses.
Yesterday he also showed that he is a true sportsman when his first shot of the day on the par 3 plugged in the upper lip of a bunker leading to a triple bogey 6. Later, rather than complain about such a horrible bad break, he simply said nothing. He accepted the bad luck and went about his business eventually tying for the lead before missing a four foot put and falling to second.
Bruce I totally agree with you. David Duval was THE BIGGEST BIGGEST STORY of this tournament. I have been watching the man for 10-12 years and am convinced of two things. 1. He is now back and will win this year. And 2. If he had not lost his confidence back early in the decade after winning the British Open, we would not even be having this conversation about Mickelson. Duval's all around game was sooooo much better than Phyl's. I firmly believe that he and Tiger in the same field all these years would have left nothing for the rest of the field. I wish he would have pulled it off....after all he was the only guy in the field to own the "Greatest Final Round in the history of the PGA tour with his 59 at the Hope Classic. Thought he could pull it off but alas, not to be. Again though...he WILL WIN THIS YEAR!!!
Bruce - good call on Duval. It was great watching him come back. I'd almost given up on him for good. Now, we await Daly...
Another great story this week was the amateurs, and the qualifiers. Not many made the cut, but it's always cool to see the "common man" play with royalty. Even if they only wind up hanging for 2 days, that's two days of glory that no one can ever take away.
But PhilHater...you got some issues. Did you have to pop a valium after that rant to get your blood pressure out of the stratosphere?

You're an Idiot!

I am just glad all the other golfers showed up to play. A couple of weeks ago, you were giving the trophy to Tiger.

What's with the hat?
