Phil Mickelson came close in yet another U.S. Open on Monday, but the title still eludes him. Will he ever win the title?
He's already a champion in my book. I pray his wife recovers completely, and is by his side cheering loudly next year when he wins the US Open...
#1 - Mon Jun 22, 2009 1:31 PM EDTNo he won't. He's one of the biggest chokers out there. I will give him an "A" for effect on getting the sympathy vote this year with his wife being diagnosed with breast cancer (which I pray for a full recovery).
#3 - Mon Jun 22, 2009 1:52 PM EDTIn this years open, Phil finally showed a degree of restraint. He, for the first time, did'nt just go out there and 'bomb away'. I think we'll see him with the trophy in the very near future!
#4 - Mon Jun 22, 2009 1:56 PM EDTBad part is he has the bombadiers mentality manages to control it right up to the last round then somehow thinks he can go back to the way he played before and let me say this. Do not let him hit a good shot with his old way of playing. If he does collapse is certain. Yesterday he took out the driver and landed 6 inches inside of deep rough when he should have been hitting a 3 wood. The he wlks up on a two foot putt and stabs at it instead of taking his time. Watch the real good players their setup for each shot is almost always the same. Guys like phil and Garcia are all over the place. You could put a stop watch on Snead and Hogan and the like and there would not be very much variance in their setup.
Yes, Phil will win the US Open, but does it really matter?? He's a great guy and the best golfer in my eyes. Everyone loves Phil!!
#5 - Mon Jun 22, 2009 1:58 PM EDTPhil has proven that he's a world class golfer and I have no doubt he will win the US Open and the British Open before too long. He and Tiger make the sport very interesting and this weekend proves it. There's a on of talent on the PGA and a major is no cake walk for anyone, including Tiger, who in my opinion, will outshine all the legendary greats from Jones & Hagen to Palmer & Nicklaus.

It is really sad, becasue I would really like to see him win the US Open. My heart and prayers go out to is wife and hope that she has a good recovery.

He just doesn't have the focus. People criticize Tiger for not playing to the crowd, but I think that's Phil's undoing. Golf is a focus-driven sport, and he loses it.

Phil as missed a cut, finished horribly low another tournament.
So please tell me HOW he is playing better than #1? #1 is always in contention...

Phil did play better in the Open than number 1 -
he played in 12 tournaments with 2 wins and 5 top 10 finishes... not quite Tiger's numbers but not bad...
WHY WHY WHY does someone always have to throw race in the mix. Maybe people like Phil because he is more of an everyman with faults who struggles with his mistakes and whose victories are therefore more sweet?
Tiger is great, but hard for an average person (white, black, pink or purple) to identify with because he is just so good and so often seems perfect.
Debbie, I think it is people like you, obsessed with race, who look for racism everywhere, that are the true racists.
Oh, maybe it's the racist things I hear people say about him, the death threats, etc. Maybe if you lived the life of a black person you would have a better idea of what we face.

#14 - Mon Jun 22, 2009 3:09 PM EDTHe'll get that trophy one day, he is both persistent and resilient and that is how he finally broke through and won both the Masters and PGA Championship. He has the right stuff but he plays to aggressive sometimes and that has been his downfall in the past, but he is learning as he showed that in this years Open. He's taking the right steps and he's close, just has to keep pushing forward!
#15 - Mon Jun 22, 2009 3:11 PM EDTFirst Phil is a very good golfer, one of the best. But with that said he lacks the mental skills. Over the years I have watched him play and heard him talk before and after tournaments and if you pay attention to his words its understandable why he does not win more. He lacks the fire-in-the-belly toughness, the take no prisoners mentality, and having a focus on first place and nothing else. He seems more than content at winning what he does and being second or near the top. This has been a major part of Tigers success and possibly why he is faltering lately. I suspect Tiger's surgery along with some unexpected knee stiffness causing him to change things a little is playing with his mental game.

Anyone who plays golf knows that if the greens are soaked. They'll be slow. I think Tiger's smart enough to figue that out and make adjustments. Others did, like Duval. Awesome puttting.
I don't think so. This tournament requires a mental game as much as a physical game. The physical part has always been there, but he has too many mental laps to win the hardest golf tourny in the world.

How does someone place second in a tournament that you say he does not have the skill set for? One little different bounce, roll, lip out, etc etc. He was as consistent in this tournament as anyone on the board. He made mistakes and hung tough... very tough. I would say you have to have the skills to be in contention and place second, whether once or 5 times. Nobody has enough luck to make it to the leaderboard in the US Open. And he did it while dealing with his wife being at home with cancer. Title or not, Phil is a true winner and champion in my book. And I certainly do not think he has some sort of undesirable fan base as another bafoon implied.

Phil is a fantastic golfer---from the neck down. He will forever be Ed McMahon to Tiger's Johnny Carson.
Sure, he'd likable enough and occassionaly remarkable, but because of his lack of mental toughness he will always be the Open's second banana.

No. The US Open courses are won by players whose strength is hitting fairways and greens. He needs to be more consistent with his drives.
