Best Stanley Cup finals ever?

The 2004 Tampa Bay Lightning defeating the Calgary Flames. They came from nowhere to win it in 7.
I agree and I'm not a fan of either (Islanders Fan).. I was at games 5 and 7 in Tampa.. gms 4- 7 were decided by a goal, and gms 5,6 were single and double OT wins..great series..
Honorable mention goes to Buffalo Dallas in my opinion
This was the worst playoff ever for one reason alone. It was blatantly obvious to anyone who has played or watched the sport for decades that the powers that be in the NHL wanted this to go seven games for the money. The referees in this series need to be investiagted for many of the penalties they called and more so for the ones they didn't. Some of the goaltender interference calls and negated goals were fabrications of Dr. Suess proportions. I was honestly ready to boycott the final game after watching this series and may boycott next year all together. As a Pittsburgh fan I have waited 17 years and could have easily waited 17 more for a win with a fair and unbiased series.
Dan, you are spot-on with your observation. There was NO need for the kind of manipulation that went on this year. These two teams were evenly matched and ready for a great repeat of last year's Finals. I was so disgusted with the coverage by NBC that I watched the whole series on CBC with knowledgable and unbiased commentators. And from a Wings fan to the Pittsburgh fans, it was totally refreshing to see so many fans stay last year to witness the celebration and presentation of the cup. It shows your appreciation for the game.
I honestly think you two are out of your minds, thinking that the powers to be would try to influence the series. everybody loves a good conspirecy theory though.
I agree with your point on the detroit fans. very classy to stick around and watch the ceromony afterwards (even if there were a few boo birds in there).
thought it was a great series, but not the best ever. New York and Vancouver comes to mind. Buffalo and Dallas also. but theres been over 100 of these i believe so lets calm down on the greatest series talk please.
couldn't believe that i could go to an NBC Sports web site and see basketball on the headlines and hockey buried. I would think they would try and shove hockey down peoples throats as it would only benefit them and the ratings. LOL instead they advertise there competition.
Dan charges that the refs and linesmen blew some quick/delayed/silent whistles against both teams throughout the Finals. Would concur there were a number of off-sides calls that broke up potentially dangerous RW incursions below the Pens blueline in Gm. 7, yet Pens breakout that scored (and a silent icing call that lead to a goal) went unwhistled. NBC commentator even noticed that one that "got away."
Don't think it is "sour grapes" when we fans 'notice' these on HDTV and there may be someone in Bettman's officiating corps. that will rerun a TIVO of the game and belatedly take notes for any next times. After all, the NBAs Tim Donaghy was beyond David Stern's radar screen when his actions were uncovered. Amazing how few people found this crooked official "rare", when Dallas Cowboy Pat Toomey had already wrote a book with a similar (football) scenario back in the early 70s.
Need fans believe ALL sports are tinged with corruption?
Totally obvious to me and anyone who sat through this sereies too, and I'm absolutely disgusted that hockey has this taint on it.
The 1994 series, when Mark Messier led a group of young players to end the Rangers' curse, was the best, but this came close.
To me and my husband, both huge Pens fans, the fact of just what the Pens overcame just to make it into the playoffs; then come back from 0-2--TWICE, first the Capitals, beating them in 7 games; then the great Red Wings, taking it to a game 7 and WINNING the Cup. Please?!?--nothing is better, this was the best to us. Everyone counted the Pens out--Melrose and company--but I knew they could do it. They were the "hungrier" team and laid it all out on the line. They played with raw heart and talent and will. Well done, Pittsburgh Pens! We live in Denver but are hearts are with the boys. Here's to a second Cup win in 2010!!
NBC's crew might as well have worn Red Wing jerseys with their obvious slant. It was quite funny to watch them switch colors at the end of game 7.
Overall, NBC's coverage was horrible. No pre-game coverage, no atmosphere (other than Pierre's stench)
Dave,
I was actually able to get Mike Lange on the radio and listened to the game while watching the nbc broadcast on mute. I thought that the announcers on VERSUS did a much better job at being unbiased.
The NHL meets the WWE. The referees must have been hand picked by Vince McMahon. NBC + Vs was not a great pick for fair and balanced coverage. I am glad I could watch CBC for the games. The Red Wings were out manned: Bettman + 4 Refs + 6 Pengiuns = 6 Red Wings. The Refs got in the way of puck clears. The one goal in the final looked like an icing call on the shoot in from their side of center ice. Pittsburg did play better with their 10 men on the ice. It is a shame that hockey has come to this.
Wow, I must have been watching a different game with different referees because I saw many goalie-interference non-calls against Detroit. Detroit got away with one penalty early in game 7 when a Pens player dropped his stick and went to get it only to have a Detroit player push it away from him. That is a penalty. And how about the non-call on the dirty hit that knocked Crosby out of the game? Clearly we watched two different games, I even asked friends who are not Pittsburgh fans if I had my Pens Vision on and they told me I did not that the referees were clearly for Detroit.
Funny how noone seems to remember the blatant 30 second too many men on the ice that the pens had that led to a goal, not to mention the 2 offsides that weren't called on the pens that directly led to goals in the 3rd and 4th games. Don't get me wrong, i like the pens style as well as the Wings but to have a great series like this overshadowed by Bettman's Cup-for-Crosby agenda is just garbage. True, the Pens did win the last 2 games, mostly fair and square, barring the icing that was not called but you can't say the Ref's were calling the game for the Wings. simply not true. Both sides got away with things however, nothing the Wings did was beyond what they normally do which is the same as any other team. As for Franzen's "hit" on Crosby, notice that he is looking at the puck the whole time and Crosby tries to squeeze between him the and boards...if anything, Crisby should have been called for holding since he had his hands around Franzen as if he's hugging an old friend. In any case, the pens win was well deserved, if not a bit tarnished and was a nice climax to an amazing playoff year.
Oh and to all those who say that the Wings are done...recall that that is exactly what everyone said after the lockout. The Pens will not be a dynasty until they win a few more cups and the Wings will not be done until they miss the playoffs a few successive years. :)
Best Finals Ever: 1971 Montreal Canadiens and Chicago Black Hawks
Wow lots of RW fans complaining. Didnt hear any complaints for the first two games when Zetterberg covered the puck with his hand on Osgood's back in the crease. That is a penalty shot.
RWs were getting away with goalie interference over and over and that hit on Crosby was interference, he didnt have the puck but was persuing the puck.
Also, nice to see the class of the fans in Detroit booing at the end. Maybe another government bailout would make you feel better? Dont worry, you can make the money you spent on tickets back in no time sitting in the "jobs bank" reading up on the latest sports illustrated highlighting the end of the RedWings reign in the NHL.
Excellet points made here - there were bad calls going BOTH ways. There were six men on the ice, two times the puck was covered in the crease, one missed icing, uncountable boarderline (and not so boarder line) holds, interferences, etc. Unless you wear foil hats and fear the black helicopters, you will see that it was very evenly called.
And if you really think that the refs/league/Bettman had it planned that Crosby and the Penguins were going to win, who is responsible for them screwing up and allowing the Red Wings to get 6 (or was it 5?) power plays to the Penguins 1 in the 5th game. They shouldn't have let that happen, because that could have had a dramatic effect on their grand schemes!
What could be better than the Pens getting revenge on the Wings AND Hossa in 7 grueling games?!
I'm a lifelong Pens fan and I'm elated that they won but for what it's worth I'd like to tip my hat to Detroit, the Wings and their fans. The Wings are an awesome team and (most of) the fans showed true class in hanging around after the game for the trophy presentation. Looking forward to next season.
There is no way that any "fix" was in -- that type of ranting by supposed hockey fans does a great disservice to their sport. Look at the less tv friendly match ups prior to the last two years - certainly no "fix" there. I think all associated with the sport of hockey have too much integrity to do that -- and it really is a major insult to hockey refereees, who while not perfect, have the toughest officiating job in all of sports and if you watch hockey every day during the season (which I do whether my team is playing or not) overall do a very admirable job. I'm not crazy about either team (wanted Blackhawks/Capitals), but the hockey was at the highest level and tremendously exciting.
And even Bettman - whom I've been no big fan of - deserves more respect from the hockey community - the Detroit crowd looked stupid/immature when he was being booed while giving the cup. The booing of Bettman by every hockey crowd has gotten real old. The facts are that hockey is in a much better shape today and for the future because of some tough decisions he made - the lockout / the new rules / the TV contracts/ fighting to keep franchises in their current location. To say that he would fix the games is delusional and unfair. Even if he turns you off completely and you view him to be completely self serving -- then there's no way he'd risk his reputation by setting up some scam involving the Stanley Cup.
So hockey fans, cut out the backbiting and enjoy your sports day in the Sun!
Definitely Top 5 - but not #1. 2006 Canes/Oilers & 1983 Isles/Oilers were both better and didn't require much thought. 1987 was great too.
