Former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre rips general manager Brian Cashman and third baseman Alex Rodriguez in an upcoming book, the New York Daily News and New York Post reported Sunday.
Do you believe Joe Torre's remarks in his book about A-Rod and Cashman?

I have always felt that Joe Torre is a good and honest person and I will continue to believe that until someone proves otherwise. I think the Yankees shafted him and these comments attributed to him only bear that out. I am a loyal Joe Torre fan and an ex-Yankee fanatic. go Dodgers!
Another piece of NYs best, ends up on the west coast.
Thank you Steinbreners,Cashman and O'Malley
Typical Steinbrenner and gang behavior. I agree they shafted Torre. A great coach and a good man! I am still a die hard Yanks fan but certainly miss Torre in the dugout.
I totally agree with LC-617042. My thoughts exactly.
Joe is a great coach and a good guy. The Yankees lost when Joe left
I agree, with LC. A-rod seems to be a fake and Cashman is just trying to save his job and will not stand-up to Hank. Go Joe & Dodgers. This from a Cubs fan
Joe Torre has always been straight up; absolutely believe it coming from Joe! One of the good guys in sports! A-Rod and that huge contract has ruined professional sports; nice to see these multi-million dollar deals still going through when the rest of the country is reeling!
stop crying joe!!! the yankees hired you when no other team wanted you. what was his coaching record before the yankees??? you guys rip a-rod about his contract, fact is joe wrote his book for money and anger for being let go.
1. He's not crying here. Just telling the truth. 2. He gave the Yankees as much as they gave him. 3.His record wasn't good because he coached bad teams. It became good when he coached All-Star teams (I mean the Yankees.) 4.A-Rod's contact is a disgrace to baseball and makes a mockery of MLB being a competitive league. 5. he has a right to be insulted by the Steinbrenner's clumsy attempt at getting rid of him. Bill, you are the blind-Yankee- fan-idiot, that every major league fan dispises.
as artie lange would say, "GUAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!" like a rod. torre is all about the money. can you blame them? just shut up torre and concentrate on managing your triple a team, the dodgers. torre is just upset because the dodgers cheap owner has not spent any money on free agents, while torres old team has. GUAAAAAAA!!!
If i remember correctly, just last season, the Dodgers made the playoffs. The Yankees didn't--not even as a wild card. The truth hurts but it's still the truth.
Funny how A-Rod's teams all got better after he left.
As PayRod was leaving Texas for the Yankees, he commented that he "didn't sign up to play with a bunch of kids". Immediately after the 1st Yankees-Rangers game of the new season, which rhe Rangers won, the GREAT Chuck Morgan (PA announcer for the Rangers) played the Who's classic "The Kids Are Alright" over the sound system. All the Yankkes fans that infest our beautiful ballpark thought that was in poor taste, but TOO BAD...... It was a rare triumph for the beleaguered Rangers fan!
Could we read the book first before we make up our minds?
Amen. With all that baseball has been through here lately, you all know there's about 17 sides to every story, some of which will be eventually be told before congress.
We never heard of these gripes before, so why would Torre start a tirade like this now? It is not like him to be vindictive and petty. Even in numerous press conferences where he had he opportunity to slam the Yankees, he always took the high road. I therefore have to believe that these comments are false or embellished by someone else. I wont believe it until I hear it come out of Torres mouth directly.
Regarding the specific content... it is not hard to imagine ARods teammates bearing some animosity towards him for some of his own comments to the press over the years.
However the Cashman comment does not make any sense at all. It was widely reported at the time that Cashman wanted Torre back and appealed to the Steinbrenners to be more flexible. It was also widely reported that the person who Torre had a real problem with was Randy Levine (team president). They never had a good relationship and Torre hinted many times in public that he had issues with Levine.
Torre is probably one of the biggest scumbags in the sport. Funny how he has long been identified as classy yet so many of his ex-players call him out for playing favorites, and being a fake and a two-timer. We will see how his present team looks at writing a book about your former players and executives. They may not say it but many of his players will not feel as if they can trust him anymore. Torre is a classless low-life and a bigot. Always has been. Always will be.
Always has been? Always will be? What?????!!!!! Another blind who-cares-about-the integrity-of-the-game Yankee fan. You're why everyone hates you and your front-running ilk. I guess 4 championships isn't enough for your disgusting me-first, low-self-esteem attitude as Stankee fan.
This sounds like anything but a Yankee fan "brand". I, too, take exception to the derogatory comments made about Coach Torre, because they, in my opinion, are baseless. However, your characterization of the person as a Yankees fan is probably as far from the truth as can be. Also, the vile, low vocabulary words you use show more of a person with low self-esteem than any of the fans of the Yankees.
Joe Torre has always displayed class as a player and coach. Where "Real-Man" gets his or her information of him being otherwise is confusing. Also, people on blogs seem not to be able to hold civil and respectable conversation, even if they're in print. Makes one wonder to the mental or intellectual capacity of those who can only use the most derogatory and vile words they can think of in order to participate in a discussion.
To the comment as to waiting and seeing if this is what Coach Torre said himself, the article is quoting from a book writen by an author that put together the text from interviews with the coach himself. The premise is that these are his words, and we are being asked as to whether or not we believe that Cashman betrayed him and/or A-Rod's teamates were dismayed by his constant obsession with the popularity of Derick Jeter. Personally, given Torre's past and consistent behavior, there is no reason to believe that he is not telling the truth.
To another point about players' salaries, we don't ever take a look at the owners who make billions of dollars each year over decades and gripe and complain about what they're making. Players have a finite amount of time to play, and then that's the end. They're being paid what the market can bear but get castigated for making the money that their profession pays, while the owners go 10, 20, 30+ years making $100+million/year without the same people on these blogs saying a word about them. There could be social, economic, & more times than not racial implications to account for these types of attitudes, but that'll have to wait for another discussion.
Henry,
I agree with your post except for your incomplete analysis of the economic side of the game.
"Players have a finite amount of time to play, and then that's the end. They're being paid what the market can bear but get castigated for making the money that their profession pays, while the owners go 10, 20, 30+ years making $100+million/year without the same people on these blogs saying a word about them."
Very very true and I do agree that the players have to get "theirs while they can for their time in the sun is never long", BUT... we have seen since the advent of Roids, players playing well or even better beyond the 35+ year level and negotiating Big Dollar or WHOPPER Dollar 3+ year contracts because their artificially Roid induced numbers become the negotiating hammer.
This does many things I believe detrimental to the game. It eliminates less costly players from playing in the bigs, and allows the owners to raises seat prices as a result.
It also can be argued that the inflated player and their salaries have inflated the value of the Baseball team. Steinbrienner bought the Yankees for $20 Million in 1981 and now they are valued at $2 Billion? As these inflated Roid salarie levels increased, so did the ticket prices, as did the TV contracts, as did the everything else associated with the Team. I don't think this would have happened, especially the TV contracts and the Seat prices had the Roid stars generated the buzz of record breaking events for TV to market.
In the end a father of two taking his family of four to a ball game will spend $250 for one game. How long can baseball afford that fan, and how long can that fan afford baseball?
I decided not to renew my partial season ticket plan at the new Yankee stadium. Rather than go to 12 games, I'll go to one and pay for a really good seat. Baseball salaries are out of wack as are those of movie stars and CEOs. It is what the market will bear, but it is a shame that some sort of ceiling can't be made in all these areas. It's shameful, but that's our system. At least ballplayers and movie stars don't get bailed out by taxpayers when their careers tank.
GO RED SOX!
I think A-Rod's action on and off the field the past few years have pretty much set the record on him as a narcissist and a weasel. As far as Cashman, heck, he's just a schmoe who's trying to make a buck. He's never gonna make as much money as he is with the Yanks because, surely, most other owners believe he's less of a personnel genius and more of a guy who has the luxury of waiting for the supposed best, most expensive player on the market to nab. Even with that, it hasn't exactly worked out well the last many years. In short, with the financial ability to sign any player in the universe you would think his results would be better. Can't blame the guy for hanging on, even if he had to sell Joe out to do so.
Basically, all obvious and believable. Hopefully, the rest of the book will tell us some things we don't know.
money doesn't buy a "team"...that's what I've been thinking lately. A-Rod is like an add-on to a house...it doesn't necessarily work to make the house as a whole a better building.
why the heck wouldnt you believe Torre?? He was one of the few people in that orgination that understood integrity and loyalty.
As much as I've tried to support A-Rod since becoming a Yankee, his actions over the last couples years have just continued to feed into every bad rumored characteristic about him. I am seriously beginning to wonder if he is just one of those guys that is just destined to never win no matter where he goes.
agree. the man simply had the class to let the dust settle and tell the story as he sees it. given all the garbage he had to deal with in New York, he deserves that much and fans across the country--the Yankee, like the Cubs and the Red Sox, have fans in every city and town--deserve to hear his side of the story about a team they love.
torre is a sore loser and now is with a loser team. The Yankees will go on to greatness, far beyond anything torre could ever dream. Old players never die, they simply strike out.
Whatever medication you're taking, I would love some.
are you serious? I think you need medicine
All you had to do to see how class-less the Yankee higher ups are is to watch the way they treated such a class act like Bernie Williams.
Well said. I'm a Red Sox fan, but Bernie and Torre were two class acts. Yankees should be ashamed at what they did to both of them. Half a billion dollars or of free agents this year, but still no team chemistry.
i am a great admirer of joe torre--both on and off the field. he is a decent person and if he affixed his reputation to this book you can take it to the bank!!!!!!!
I think Joe is one class dude. As for Stienbrenner well lets just say he is like a road apple.
And K-Rod I mean A-Rod well we did not trust him in Seattle and sure as hell don't trust him now. My feelings are that Lou wanted to come back to ny , so he got out of Tampa. but did not get to NY.
Sports have gone overboard today and the voters are to blame for this. They are the ones who are buying the stadiums. Can you imagine Bill Gates telling the state of washington
hey build me a campus for my company or I am going to move to ---------------- (fill in the blank) Now who should get the money.
If owners had to come up with the money they would not be able to play these crazy payrolls.
And you try tell me the players only have a short time to earn the money? Where do you see it written they must make a lifetime of money in a few years. There are a lot of fans in the stands who will not make 10 million in a life time and yet a lot of players make in in 1 or 2 years.
Lets just say I am not surprised at the story. Is it true? Dunno . Lets hear the yankee side
and then we can decide. Gotta remember that zimmer got Pissed at george too.
I believe Torre would not make up this type of stuff but I thought he would keep it to himself until he retired. It was fairly evident that Arod was wierd around Jeter his first year
Torre was always a class act with media. But his handling of ARod and the arms he ruined with his mishandling of the pitching staff was awful.
He was by far the highest paid manager in baseball and the Yankees offer would have kept him the highest paid. Plus the incentives he could have earned were very significant. But most sports people hate being paid on results. We need more sports contracts to be based on straight salary and loaded with incentives Just like most of us are paid.
Apparently results were too much to ask so he took a contract making millions less. Then he bites the hand that made him a muti millionaire.
Let's see what happens when the book comes out. Rushing to judgment and opinion can be a bad thing. Example: look at how the press treated Roger Maris in NY. Granted it's not 1961, but, if anything , with the development of 24 hour information, it's worse. The News and The Post have a tendancy to sensationalize (to put it mildly) many stories.
On the surface, and by apperarance, and interviews, Torre is a class act. It can't be easy dealing with a bunch of over paid athletes, used to getting every thing they want. He was (and still is) a major league base ball manager. And like all bosses, he's going to make some decisions that will annoy the self centered and back biting players on the team. I am sure he had his favorites, and maybe he could have dealt with it better. But I am sure that will all come out once the book is published. Someone, somewhere will stand up and say what they feel.
Steinbrenner is hard guy to deal with as well. Can you ever imagine coming to you job every day with the fear of getting fired, even after you have achieved so much? It's the nature of the business, and anyone knows that going into The Bronx Zoo.
By the way Marj-547211, way to be relevant. Save your battle cry for the Sons of Sam Horn website.
I like any controversy that causes the Yankees problems!!!!!
Joe Torre got stiffed!!
Red Sox rule!!
