The Buccaneers fired Jon Gruden on Friday after seven seasons.
His record is not that of a great coach but one of an decent coach. He always seemed to have problems with his QB's and this I believe lead to his downfall in Tampa, If you look at his record in Oakland his success their can be attributed to the success of his QB and lack of controversy over that position. It just seemed that after coming to Tampa he had a constant QB merry go round.Even with an aging Jeff Garcia he benched him at the start and said it was due to injury but Garcia had to come out and say hey I'm not that injured. I think the team could see his lack of trust in his QB's and that made it difficult for the team to go and perform. Just my 2 cents hire Marty Schottenheimer!
Gruden walked into a team that Tony Dungee had assembled and was declared a hero. He didn't do diddly squat since then. What a waste of money he was. He should have been gone long before now.
Bigjr:
He took the team Tony Dungy put together farther than Dungy did against a team he put together at Oakland. Looks like either way he would have had his title. He should have stayed with Oakland.
Another terribly over-rated "wunderkind" ala Jason Garrett of the Cowboys.
If they ended up getting Tony Dungee back, yes it was a good decision.
Gruden was 'okay'. The problem is, who can they get that's better?
Yea! Chuckie is gone. To late for fans and players. Egos do not win games and that is all he brought to the table. His arrogant attitude during games turned many fans away. Put him back on the West Coast and he might produce different results but would certainly fit in better.
Yeah...who can they get that's better? Gruden will have many choices of teams or networks. I doubt that he's upset in the least.
I am pleased to see Gruden go, but moreover, to see Allen go. Since their respective arrivals, we've squandered draft picks and free agency decisions and have shamed Tampa legends (John Lynch). The NE Patriots have shown, especially after this season, that there is a direct correlation between having a strong Operations team and a strong on field team. I'm hopeful that the Glazers vetting process for our new leadership leads us to our first playoff win since our Superbowl win in 02.
I know there is a certain 0-16 team that would love to have him.
Nah - Trust me. Detroit has hired the man that I think is the best of all possible coaches on the wire - Jimmy Schwartz. Gruden would tread water with this bunch. Schwartz will have them in the playoffs inside of two years, three tops. And this from a man in Baltimore - Rex Ryan isn't as good as JS. Congrats, Lions fans - the light at the end of the tunnel is now here.
FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you morons......it's Tony Dungy..........not Dungee. And HE was the man that would have brought the Bucs to the Super Bowl here next month. The Glazers are money machines but no sense of football.
Shanahan is our only prayer now.
GEE, you're right! It's spelled 'Dungy'. I just copied the text from the guy above me but lord knows I could only be a moron for not 'knowing'.
God help your being a 'mom/grandmom'.
I respect Gruden tremendously during his early work, but let's do a reality check. That was Dungy's team that beat Oakland. After it fell apart in 2003, we've had nothing but late-season collapses, uninspired recruitment and a schizophrenic quarterback rotation. How many other teams have continued on despite injuries and produced rather than made excuses? I wish him well, but it is time to move on.
Long over due! He is outmatched by 90% of the NFL couches. He always blames someone else for his losses.
Coach Gruden won less than 47% of his games. That does not take much brain work to see he neede to go! Good to see him go at last. Now I can cheer for the Bucs with pride again. I just hope the new coach has a backbone and LEADS. Taking the blame for failures and praising the players when they do well. Not blaming everyone else for everything under the Florida sun.
Being fired by the only people to ever fire Tony Dungy is not a shame, it's an honor. These idiots (the Glazers) are a disgrace and an embarassment to the fine people of Tampa, whose tax dollars fill their pockets. The only thing they ever accomplished in life was surviving childbirth. They fired Dungy through the press and now Gruden when it's too late to find another job. What a bunch of pussies!

He's a great coach and will get hired someplace else.
